It's cool seeing you guys raving about the show on tv because I was there and saying the same thing last weekend. It's like I get to relive it!

watching them try to follow PJ is almost to paniful to watch!
the boys blew them off the stage!
I'm sure age factors in. The who is legend.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.
Haha! They took lessons from The Who. Yes, PJ was fan-fucking-tastic (I was there) and the Who have had much better nights, but all in all, I don't think ANYONE has compared to The Who on one of their "on" nights.
the man kicked ASS! they all did....band was in top form. like others have said, i feel proud this is our band
word.
again.
last nite showed me why I fuckin love this band
Aah, fuck it, I’m just gonna go home, turn on the fuckin’ TV...
Watch the nightly news and drink a beer...

I love Pearl Jam, but in defense of the Who, it IS worth noting that Pete and Roger are in their sixites. It would be much fairer to compare 2008 Pearl Jam and 1978 Who...
Of course the current Who can't compete with Pearl Jam.
But the Who in their prime with all members still alive would have been very close. Probably the closest any band could come to Pearl Jam in terms of live performance.
I also want to add that my brother, who isn't a big fan of Pearl Jam, wrote me today and said he saw PJ on VH1 last night and was totally blown away how good they were.
I hope PJ is still making records and playing live 20 years from now.
I'll come back to this thread in 20 yrs and debate this when Pearl Jam still has us all by the balls traveling all over the world to see them and Ed is still holding it down with his voice and Mike killing it harder than Keith Richards.
see you guys then

Ugh...they just released a two tracks from Live at Leeds on Rock Band and I find My Generation from that show to be almost unlistenable.
Are you kidding me??
Obviously they didn't include like the 15 minute improv Jam in the middle of My Generation where Pete is playing off his own echo and Moonie and The Ox are going apeshit...It's out of this world.
Listen to the album my friend...Cause Rock Band obviously does not do it justice.
While your at it...check out Amazing Journey/Sparks from that same album.
It's kind of hard to say that Pearl Jam upstaged the Who when you consider that they were playing songs that The Who wrote. The Real Me and Love, Reign O'er Me are not Pearl Jam songs. And to try and compare a group of mid-thirties rockers to a group of mid-sixties rockers is not an apt comparison, at all. If PJ's in their prime, you have to compare them to the Who in their prime, and as much as I love PJ, they'd be hard-pressed to fight against Roger Daltrey's incredible pipes, Pete's brilliant songwriting, Entwhistle's inventive basslines and Keith Moon being Keith Moon. Let's keep it in perspective here; for example, Jeff was incredible on The Real Me last night but let's remember it was John from the Who who wrote that bassline.

indeed.
however, pearl jam are all early 40s nowadays. just an FYI.
i like the who, but i don't love em...never did, never will. so of course for me pearl jam blows them away in my mind. however, there is no denying what a fantastic song writier pete townshend is, and the amazing raw energy the who brought to rock and roll. of 'classisc rock bands'....the who don't rate all that high for me, but that is purely subjective opinion. however, hell yes...you cannot compare. it isn't fair to the who, nor pearl jam really. i can't wait to finally see this show in it's entirety!
im not trying to compare the two bands so much. that was not really my intention when starting the thread.
being a huge fan of both bands, im just not so sure it was the best thing to do, having PJ play b4 them is all im saying.
and i'll get thrashed for this im sure. if we are comparing the two, i think on those two songs, PJ sounded better then most of the live recordings ive heard from the Who when they were PJ's age.
anyWHO, both bands rocked, and i loved seeing this.
Peace, Love.

PJ tore it up on both songs and i agree LROM brought tears to my eyes, but to say they are better than The WHO or "outshowed" them is ridiculous
come back here and say that when PJ becomes the age the WHO are now and then we can talk
The WHO rocked the best they could and i was impressed, in their prime to me there is no comparison..The WHO
Unfortunately I've yet to watch the show (got it taped and waiting for me), but let's continue your line of thought for a second.
To make sure we're comparing apples to apples, compare Pearl Jam now with the Who 20 years ago? Pearl Jam comes out on top by a landslide.
Or, Pearl Jam in the early 90's with the Who in the late 60's/early 70's? Granted, there aren't too many people who can say they got to witness both live and in person (and I am jealous of those who are lucky enough) but I would have to say that is a pretty close match-up. Too close for me to try to make a definitive choice. Both bands, in their prime, were among the biggest and best bands in the world (by that statement, I mean that EVERYONE agreed they were the biggest and the best, not just a core group of hard core and loyal fans, as is the case now with Pearl Jam), both in the studio and in their live performances.
In 20 years will Pearl Jam be able to pull of what the Who can still do now? We'll see. But I wouldn't bet against it.
I've just made myself extremely anxious to get home and watch the show, because the pairing of the two bands is pretty phenomenal.

FYI Jeff (45) and Matt (45.5) are in their mid 40's. (Pushing 50 soon)
I was surprised by this; I did not think the band was quite that aged yet. Turns out they're not, according to wikipedia; Mike's 42, Vedder is also and Stone's 41. Jeff and Matt are both 45. They're both older than I thought they were, admittedly, but none of them are pushing fifty, but this is small potatoes. My point was that to really upstage the Who, they'd have to write some songs that are equal to the two songs they played last night. In my opinion, they have written a few, but the number is small, whereas the Who have quite a few songs that are that good. I'm a bigger PJ fan; I have a stronger emotional connection to them as they are playing in my time period, but a great song is a great song, and I can tell that the Who wrote the book that PJ has based their career on.
Wow, I thought that whole show pretty much rocked, the interviews, the red carpet stuff, Sandler and Tenacious D (sandler was better), man the Foo's and Beck was awesome, Pearl Jam was just face melting, I thought The Who kicked some ass! C'mon, he's freakin 64 he's not gonna belt 'em out like Eddie, but man Pete vs Mikey isn't something you wanna do... And Mikey is one of my favs, but so is Pete.
Was a blast watchin' Pete -- just hearing/watchin all those songs was amazing!
And then, yeah, I picked up my acoustic and strummed while muting the Flaming Lips... Turns out I play Behind Blue eyes dif from Pete though, he needs to figure that one out!

Amen. PJ was PART of a revolution in music. The Who WAS the revolution!

The Who are in their SIXTIES. it's not a fair comparision to compare Pearl Jam now to The Who.
agree and I'm sorry people, but I love Pearl Jam, I really do, but they will never, ever be as the good as the Who EVER were.
NEVER
well said. thank you.

"Live at Leeds" and "Live at the Isle of Wight" are as heavy as it gets folks.
and The Who's performance of "A Quick One" from "Rock'n'Roll Circus" is the greatest performance of any song ever.
Pearl Jam is great...one of the best...but not the best.
Granted...they blew The Who off the stage last night.
Roger and Pete are in their 60's, They were missing 2 key members, and They had absolutly nothing left to prove.
Long Live Rock
