I watched about five minutes of one after seeing your post earlier. It's not great but doesn't bother me too much. Why's there a difference though? I don't understand

I'm reading that they're using something called Dolby Vison in addition to "upscaling" it to 4K, and that not doing that from the original tape reels might be the issue. I'm not exactly sure. Now, I've only watched it on my work computer, so maybe it will look alright on my TV at home, but judging by the hundreds of people on Twitter talking about how crappy it looks, I doubt it.

It sort of looks like a movie instead of a sitcom.

It's just weird because on TBS, when they reframe it from 4:3 to 16:9 (demonstrated in the picture below), there's no loss of picture quality. It looks exactly as it did on the DVDs, just with a different aspect ratio. So I think they could've gotten that widescreen movielike look without compromising the picture quality. Whatever they did to make it look like it did on TBS is how it should've been presented here. No need for Dolby Vision, or 4K, or upscaling, or anything else that I'd categorize as "subtraction by addition."

It's an uncle of Jerry's that's writing a book that's "based on all my experiences!" but I can't remember his name.

  • I’ve softened my stance on the Netflix conversion. It’s grainy….but on my huge TV, it doesn’t look too bad. My complaints from a week or two ago were based off of checking it out on my desktop at work.

I have a feeling younger people who've never watched much Seinfeld will have a harder time getting into it and binging it than they did with shows like Friends and the The Office.

  • It's smart. It’s a smart show and a smart crowd will appreciate it. We’re not going to dumb it down for some bonehead mass audience!

I tend to agree. Especially starting on episode one. First two seasons go slowly, especially when it takes two clicks to get to Squid Game (or whatever the hell the kids are watching these days). If I was trying to turn someone on to Seinfeld and only an episode or two to do it, I might show something from seasons 8 or 9. A little zanier, faster moving. Less bits and more rapid fire jokes.

Yeah even the third season...it's not till towards the middle, in my opinion, when they started to hit a consistent stride. That's a big ask of people who are accustomed to starting their Netflix binges from episode 1. I would have someone start with the Bookman episode in season 3 if I was getting them into the show. So many classics start at that point. Or maybe I'll have them watch The Chinese Restaurant in 2 and then skip to The Massage and then settle in from Bookman on till the end.

Since the show's older than even Friends, a ton of the references will fly over people's heads too. Pretty much every storyline wouldn't exist if they had cell phones. haha

Just a guess - but was it Marissa Tomei when her and George were sitting on the bench.

I kind of forgot about that one but, no, she did not express a love for manure in that scene that I am aware of. Although she was not repulsed by it either! Thinking of someone else...
