Is there any actual science behind detox/cleansing/purging diets that someone could point me to? From what I've read this is junk science at best. You're probably feeling a placebo effect. Or maybe you feel good because you just spent the previous 10 days feeling like shit.

You could research it and I will too. I am not sure if "Western science" has focused much on it. (Did you the see the molecular breakdown when a person does fast that was in a previous post in this thread?) When a person goes to a Dr. and is diagnosed with a problem, they are usually not advised to do a cleanse. Regardless, I think this is because in our advanced technology we have lost touch with simple maintenance of our bodies. Again, the band aid. The costly band aid.

It is something I have learned from other venues such as people's personal experiences such as my Indian friend (from India) and it was passed down to him from prior generations. ALso, I have talked to Native AMericans that have done similar cleanses. Mostly, this desire comes from my own inner voice telling me that it something I should do. Science is wonderful but unfortunatly, they don't have all the answers.

And yes the 10 days of shit do make eating (and all those other favorite things we put in our mouths) taste so much better but it is much more then that.

That is the best way I can explain it.

Who really can hear our bodies better then ourselves?

I don't believe in the cleanse diet. If you want to feel good, eat healthy. If you want the toxins out of your body, eat healthy. Fruits and vegetables have fiber they will clean a system out as quickly or as slowly as you want depending on the amount a person eats. Different grains have fiber, too. The side effect, of course is that it's not a fad diet and can be sustained every day for the rest of your life.

I haven't had coffee/tea/soda for 40 days after 15 years of addiction to coffee. What is amazing to me is that I have the same amount of energy but without the sleepiness. In fact, my insomnia is worse :)

It's great that Ed's quit smoking at least for a few days anyway. But he looks so thin lately. I really hope he's not "detoxing" himself away to nothing. I can understand that detoxing is good for the system, as I've done it before, but I could lose a few pounds. I like Eddie with a little meat on his bones.

  • Peal Jam frontman Eddie Vedder has revealed that he is currently on a crash detox diet.

Vedder told Interview magazine that he wanted to lose weight followig the band's recent US tour.

"It's a heavy detox, so nothing in my belly except water, salt and cayenne pepper. I'm doing the Master Cleanse, which also means I'm not smoking. I haven't smoked for four days,” he said.

Vedder, who was talking to Josh Brolin, star of the movie W, said he wasn't confident enough to predict how successful the diet would be.

"I don't know how it's all going to come out -- this is, like, four days in. In fact, I don't want to talk about it. But it does feel weird,” he said.

if you go on that Master Cleanse diet website, it goes through every step and gives you all the information you are asking for and more.

They tell you how much to drink a day. No drink other then their recipe they provide which is cayenne pepper, lemons, maple syrup (B grade) organic, filtered water. Then you are supposed to drink herbal tea and salt twice a day for constipation. It's all in there.

Also, someone added in this thread about the different types of fasts. If it is your first time, they recommend other fasts other then the Master Cleanse.

    Good luck!

Someone posted on this thread about the process that happens on a cell level that once a person stops eating for 24 hours, toxins that are in the system from Environmental issues are released. This only happens when there is no food intake. I agree with the fruit and vegetable thing as good maintenance but it doesn't get rid of as much toxins as a cleanse. But to each their own.

Congrads on quitting soda, tea, coffee! That's great. I wonder how long it takes to get it out of your system?

10 days, so today is my last day. I may do this twice a year. I really feel good.

You should drink between 6 and 12 glasses of the "lemonade". Whenever you chose to drink it is up to you. Basically when you feel hungry, grab a glass.

Your assumption is correct; nothing but the lemonade during the cleanse.

Congratulations on completing it. I think I've probably done it three times a year.

thanks! Do you truly have to follow the re-entry process as described in the program, or can you move past the broth immediately? I think I'd rather drink the lemonade then the broth :(

Yes, I agree to each his own. Not all food is toxic, though. Also, I suspect I would have less insomnia if I ate dinner earlier, and worked out more later in the day. I would explore those options first before a cleanse. About a year ago I researched ways to clean up my system by reading articles through google. I always went back to, "How would my eating habits change if I did this?" Instead, I added more fruit/vegetables to my diet and created a more sustainable healthy lifestyle.

I don't have a problem with not eating for 24 hours and getting those toxins to the surface. Just flush those toxins out with gorgeous fruit and vegetables and water. Then add more varieties of food back.

The main question, and why I'm skeptical about cleanses, and the master cleanse in particular, is how many people who go through the cleanse change their lifestyles to reflect a healthier attitude afterwards? Did that person learn anything about a healthy lifestyle? If they did, then why would they do a cleanse again? Don't they feel good already? If that person is worried about weight loss, wouldn't a long term plan be better?

On the flip side I can totally understand spiritual fasts, but it's to slow down the body processes to obtain the goal. I was on a 2 day winter solstice fruit fast. I felt great afterwards, but instead of needing it again the next year I just decided to add more fruit to my lifestyle throughout the year. If I needed that level of stillness I could just go back, but I'm doing a ok.

You're welcome. I've actually never tried the master cleanse, so I can't really give any help on that. Hopefully someone else can provide some information. The only fasts I've done are straight water fasts. I am interested in trying the master cleanse though. Then again, that lemonade doesn't sound too appetizing :p.

    I agree.

and we can all say with some certainty that Ed is not going to stop drinking and smoking

    maybe smoking, but not drinking

it actually doesn't seem very healthy to me, depriving your body and your organs of nutrients for an extended period of time sounds more dangerous than anything else.

There are some interesting opinions here about the best way to go, but I did that shit cold turkey and would recommend nothing else. I tried many different tactics. (...) but nothing worked until I quit cold turkey.

Someone once asked me, "What one thing in the past five years are you most proud of?" My answer was "quitting smoking." Because I seriously thought I'd never be able to quit. I thought it would eventually kill me.

    same same situation here
I am glad I did it but even after 19 months it's still pretty hard sometimes for me to think I am not a smoker anymore...really, especially when smoking is the topic ;)

  • I don't know what to tell you, Riscard, because I relate.

During my 10 years as a smoker I quit once for eight months when I was 21 but I never felt like I'd quit. I felt like a smoker who was just depriving myself. Then I started again after bumming smokes from people at parties.

But something was different when I quit two years ago and I have never looked back. It might have been mental. I mean, I woke up one day and realized that I'd been a smoker for 10 of my 28 years on this earth and it shocked me. I realized I WOULD DIE AN EARLY DEATH if I didn't quit, and smoking wasn't exactly winning me a lot of points among the ladies. So for some reason it was just different. When I quit cold turkey I made a commitment to NEVER smoke again, not even for old times' sakes. That might have been the difference.

Good luck. And I hope Ed really is trying to quit with his cleanse. I know a cleanse has a lot of benefits, but quitting smoking has to absolutely be the best among them.

I don't know about you but the majority of people I know that are even interested or would attempt to a fast are already healthy in their everyday lives. A little drink here and there. Maybe even a little fried food every once in a while but mostly consuming healthy foods. Like we all have heard many times and I believe; moderation is key.

Not to argue; more like a debate: I still think there is a huge difference between a fruit fast and a water/lemonade fast. Mainly because of the fact that with the liquid fast, you are giving your digestion system a break. That gives the body a chance to clean out impurities that are deep within the tissues (like the colon, for instance).

But yeah, everyone has to figure out what works for them and the fact that we are talking about it brings it to the ears to some that may have never heard about it before or never thought people actually did them in this century. Who knows?

    ANyways, nice discussion, thanks!
