Well I've seen 8 of the nominated movies. Still haven't seen Winter's Bone or The Kids Are Alright. Out of the ones I saw that are nominated 127 Hours was my fav, but I think Social Network might win the Oscar.

Lead Actor- Colin Forth (King's Speech)
Supprting Actor- Christian Bale (The Fighter)
Lead Actress- Natalie Portman (The BLack Swan). The movie was ok, but she was great and haven't seen any of the actresses that were nominated  )
Supporting Actress- I'm debating between Amy Adams and Melissa Leo in The Fighter. Also Hailee Steinfeld was great in True Grit.
Animated Film- Toy Story 3 (duh)
Writing Adapted- too close to call
    Writing Original- The King's Speech
    Visual Effects- Inception
Music Original Score- Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (The Social Network)

    Biggest snubs-
    Daft Punk for Tron for
Armie Hammer and Andrew Garfield in The Social Network

can someone please tell me how the Academy knows if an actor was really just that damn good, or if the director deserves the credit? i don't get the "best director". How does anyone know who was the best at something we can't see? and if the director wins, shouldn't that mean teh actor doesn't? if he's that good an actor, he wouldn't need so much direction, right?

Inception and Alice in Wonderland were the only 2 I have seen of all the nominations. I liked Inception better. I would like to see the others but don't have the time or money right now. Good luck to all.

If not for Restrepo, then I think my prediction of Jeff Lurie winning an Oscar before a Super Bowl would come true. Inside Job and Restrepo is close, one of them take it.

I'm sure you can look on the internet for what the criteria is. A director's job goes beyond just the actor. Camera angles, mise-en-scene, lighting, how he/she has chosen to tell the story, tone, representation, allegory ect, ect.

the academy is made up of actors, directors, etc...each category is nominated and voted on by the specific trade...actors vote for actors, directors for directors etc...and these people watch (or are supposed to) all the movies eligible...either by going to the theaters or watching screeners - dvds mailed to them

the entire academy votes for best picture

The director is usually the one that decides the camera angles and transitions.

i agree she should be considered for best actress, but if that was the case she'd lose out no question to natalie portman. She has a chance with best supporting actress.

As far as why she was and is supporting actress-jeff bridges, and matt damon really arent considered supporting actors in the movie. they are the leads. she is the supporting actress. But i hear ya.

I dont understand the hate for Winters Bone or Kids are Alright. The director of Winters Bone should be praised for creating this whole world, that scene where she's in this abandoned like garage with these scary guys, the movie really created this whole atmosphere, of poverty, of backwoods rural south life. I loved it. And her going on that boat in the dark and reaching into the water... brilliant. Very well paced movie.

As far as Kids are All Right, I loved it as well. The ending scene, where Mia Waskikowski, I forget how to spell her name, but the blond daughter, who goes to college, her family drives off, and the camera pans to a closeup of her face, and she looks devastated, her chin starts to quiver and she starts to cry. Unreal scene, maybe my favorite scene of the year, and maybe of the last couple years.

I've seen 9/10 best pic noms and i thought 127 Hours was the best this year. Franco is a genius and the director Boyle did a better job than Slumdog (which racked up a bunch of awards).

since mid december ive said, toy story 3, portman, firth, bale and steinfeld in all the key categories. the golden globes and SAG awards have validated these opinions.

The oscars should give best picture to toy story 3 but it wont unfortunately.

i dont understand the people who say kings speech isnt good. i was sold on the movie based on firth giving that speech in the goddamn trailer for godssake. No other actor became the character they portrayed to the extent that firth did. mindblowing performance, and coming off the heels of A Single Man? Wow!

Saw The Town and The Social Network this weekend. Enjoyed both, wasn't blown away by either. Fun movies. Social Network was very well written.

Still want to see The Fighter and The Kings Speech before the Oscars.

firth will win best actor, but no way is christian bale going to lose this one. Bale put on a HELL of a performance. I'd say he stole the movie from marky mark.

The Fighter is a really good movie but peters out a bit half way through. Christian Bale's performance though is amazing... astonishing... I was blown away the entire movie every time he was on screen.

i saw the town last week. i enjoyed the hell out of it but was basically pounding a bottle of merlot whilst enjoying some nice aged gouda during the movie. needless to say i don't remember much of what happens after the chick learns who ben affleck really is. so i have no idea how it ended. :x

normally i think affleck is a dope, but i did like him in this...from what i remember.
