What was the best performance you ever saw to open a PJ show?

Who would you LIKE to see open for PJ?

Or, are you like me, and wish we could just go straight to the main event :D?

    butthole surfers.

kidding. they sucked. i'll go with rancid. no, they sucked too. oh, i know! the fastbacks. no, they sucked girl style. ooh, murder city devils! no, they sucked major, and ruined sonic reducer to boot.

ok, i'll go with ben harper. he's the only decent opener they've ever had.

  • I've only seen them twice and the first time was in a Festival. Both times the previous band were a bit boring. I just drank, soaked up the atmopshere, looked at the lighters/cellphones and waited for PJ...

I've been wanting to see James McMurtry for quite some time. I could kill two birds with one stone. His music is not Pearl Jam-ish, but I think he and Ed would get along...

Idlewild wins though for my favorite.

Kings Of Leon are the best openers I've seen - especially when Ed joined them for Slow Night So Long

I'd love to see the John Butler Trio open for them - a hippie/surfer/political activist/environmentalist who plays some kick ass funky blues - perfect!

You're right - that dude wasn't half bad. I liked his little ditty about working in Chicago.

    ummm....Paddy Casey?

of course not. The Black Keys were good though. outdoor venue, sun setting, blues rock opener. it worked.

would love to see JBT open for them. or else Cornell, or Lanegan, or Blind Melon or AIC now that theyre touring again...or else....etc
  • Seen 'em 9 times and haven't liked any of the openers. I usually spend that time checking out the audience and waiting in line at the bar.
    Excess in moderation.

  • Only opener I've seen for them was The Supersuckers and I liked them. I would like to see The New Pornographers or Social Distortion open for them.

  • Seen Dead Flowers in Auckland, 95 Someone else in 98, both sucked.
Idlewild, in 03, Supersuckers in 05, Sonic youth, Sleater Kenny and Kings of Leon on 06, best openers i do not know there was a bunch at the NorthWest Schools benifit, Presadents of USA, Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart and a few others. Fav was Pearl Jam opened at the Gorge 05 does that count??? If not maybe Sonic Youth

Yeahm, furtureheads were awful! The Copenhagen crowd applauded when they announced their last song. It was that bad!

My favourite is Wolfmother. Those guys rocked in Barcelona and Eddie and Mike came out to jam with them! Eddie also said that Wolfmother was one of the best bands they had ever played with. That's a pretty huge compliment to an up and coming band!

    Great night!

    well...concerning my experiences:

Dismemberment Plan in Hamburg 2000 didn't impress me that much...

In Berlin last year, me and several hundreds? thousands? didn't get to hear The Black Keys because we hadn't make the entrance when they started...from there it sounded like a soundcheck with guitar and drum...

    Munich and Dusseldorf this year:
First, I liked the Futureheads when they opened in Munich...but I got bored at the end...and they really annoyed me in Dusseldorf...it's great when all the band-members can sing...but they were (musically spoken) pumping, hitting, shouting in every song like they wanted to get rid of cramps...
Interpol, the second opener there was pretty cool (not really hot)...they should have played longer and no Futureheads before.

BUT last year I saw Placebo in Bielefeld, Germany and they had a great opener...also because they had such a different style, might be also a good contrast to PJ...I'm talking about She Wants Revenge...great band!

I saw Death Cab open for U2 a while back in Philly.. I didn't know anything about them but I remember really enjoying them.

I liked MMJ too, but Sleater-Kinney would have to be the best for me, at least for PJ openers :D

  • Bad Religion - Summerfest '95 (along w/ Ed singing "I Only Play for Money" with the frogs before that. The first and by far the best opening act that I have seen. I would put Robert Pollard - Cincinnati '06 as my second best.

SATELLITE PARTY (Perry Farell) - nothing special, interesting but forgettable

30 SECONDS TO MARS - they were good. Really. The Austrian crowd loved them and so did we. Jared Leto singer even made the crowd to sing "the fuckin' Jeremy" with them. They are gonna be better I am sure but I still enjoyed their performance.

KINGS OF LEON - if you ask me they are not that good at all. Incubus and Satellite Party DID catch my attention but they were bunch of noisemakers. I know their records and did not attract me but I was hopeful live experience would help me get closer to thei music but sorry...I can't...The only song I enjoyed was the last one when Ed joined them on stage...to tell you the truth for me that was the only highlight of that show (it was like Ed felt he should have saved the show with his presence...actually he managed to:))

LINKIN PARK - I have been a fan of theirs since the very beginnings (One Step Closer) and finally I got to see them twice this year...both shows in Poland and Austria were pretty damn good however the crowd went totally crazy and they almost fucked up most of our time... My friend did not like Linkin Park before but since that...they respect them!!!!!!:)

INCUBUS - they were very cool however I missed the interaction and some dances / movements... but it was so interesting to see/hear PJ is EVEN SO MUCH BETTER than them!

THE USED - Oh my God, it had been painful and terrible to count the long seconds till it was finally (Thank God) over

FASTBACKS- They were OK - that's how I remember, not bad but not outstanding either.

but out of all the best was

WOLFMOTHER - 2 quite impressive shows in the Benelux last year...their debut record is pretty impressive but they sound even better live... the trio tried to put their best into those shows and they managed to win over the crowd!!!

ohh yes they are! started doing shows again in October with a new singer, and, i think they might even be recording new material. not 100% sure about that but either way theyre definitely back together :D
  • Clearly there best opener...just saw them at the Masquerade in Atlanta and they killed, the new singer does Hoon so well I was glad I was at the back of my room without my glasses...it was as if shannon never left. Did all of my favorites, and some of the songs Travis has written (there new lead singer) sound great as well, to be included on the new album.

But this would be their best opener, though Sparta and B Harper are a close second tie in my humble opinion (imho).

    peace, chicken grease, limas
