As many of us know, doing a concert on New Year's Eve is often the best and most memorable live music experiences we can have. As I witnessed a few years ago at My Morning Jacket at MSG, these New Year's shows can be insanely awesome. So these are the 2010 NYE concert from the research I've done:

Phish - Madison Square Garden
Drive-by Truckers - Terminal 5 NYC
Black Keys - Aragon Chicago
CAKE - Austin Music Hall
Primus - Fox Oakland
Flaming Lips - Cox Center OKC
Hold Steady - Riverside Milwaukee

If you attended one of these shows or another show not listed, post your experience below. I will not be seeing a show on NYE this year, so I gotta live vicariously thru you guys.

Cheers and Happy 2011 baby!

  • Stranded in NYC because of the snowstorm, not able to fly stand-by till saturday the earliest. I was suppose to be in Colorado & meet my wife Tuesday  . Making the best of the situation though ;). Scalped a ticket last night for Phish, at cost 8-) . They were f*ckn incredible! Went to 3 of their shows in Miami last year but they were so much tighter last night. Thought I'd be able to get out of the city today but the flights are still back logged. So now I'm "stuck" ;) in NYC on NYE with nothing to do but enjoy another face melting Phish show on NYE, got another ticket for cost 8-) . Life sucks, but someone has to enjoy it .
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)

Seen Cake a few times myself. If anyone on the board is going to see them, enjoy, they are simply great live.

I'm embarrassed to say that I'm not attending either NYE show in my hometown; JJ Grey & Mofro (however I saw them last nite) or Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi.

Lucinda Williams @ The Viper Room show went off well; I didn't go but stopped in afterwards to check. The crowd was soooo not the usual Viper crowd (translation: slightly more senior). Lucinda's cool but I preferred to rock the year in a little harder.

I spent NYE with Camp Freddy at The Roxy.

I saw Phish at MSG last night and it was truly a spectacular way to ring in the new year. I also caught MMJ there for previous New Years.. It was great but Phish blew them out of the water.

saw the black keys last night at the aragon. Saw them last year too in chi but last night's show blew it out of the water. The energy was fucking great on all the material but the new stuff sounds really good live. Was like a giant rock concert...this was what midnight was like.

Just got back from Phish after seeing them New Year's Eve as well. Tonight was my 40th show and it was INCREDIBLE and I felt that it was actually better than NYE. That's just me though; maybe it's because i was about 15 rows back tonight and in the 300's for NYE. Either way, after seeing like 15 Phish shows since my last PJ shows, I am REALLY overdue for my PJ fix.

moe. HOB in boston, very solid show (both nights, the 30th and 31st). Downloading the phish MSG run now
  • I also attended the Black Keys in Chicago. Great show. Behind PJ at Bonnaroo, the funnest show I have attended.

I put the run in order of personal favorites: night 2, night 1, night 3. For me, Meatstick<Auld Lang<After Midnight couldn't be topped. One of my highlights from yesterday's show was Walk Away.. I love it so much when they do that. Agreed though, now that my Phish phix has been temporarily satiated, I'm in need of some serious PJ!

my favorite show of the holiday run overall was 1/1/11. COMPLETELY floored during the second set, not to mention the hour and 40 minute first set, with a great Walk Away as you mentioned, and one of the best Rebas since the reunion. Oh yeah, and a little bustout called Round Room :)

Nice! Some friends of mine here in LA book the Tipitina room and one of these days I hope to get there. Always some excellent talent in that venue.

Lucinda Williams would have been good to see live, I was pleasantly surprised at the Bridge School this year w/ her!! It sucks living in a small city and not having any big shows to go to....I spent my night playing Guitar w/ a local band at a party.

  • happy new year music lovers!

i make a habit of hitting the road for music & nye, if nothing local happens...had tickets to dbt at terminal 5 and changed mind and booked NOLA for 4 nights, with free food/booze etc(vip) for tipitinas on NYE.

it had been a few years since i'd seen tea leaf green and they impressed me

new orleans is a crazy city...must do jazz fest there, one year soon

i would also have loved to have seen trucks and his gorgeous talented woman, sing&play in fla

i've seen some great balloon drops, listening to live music on NYE, and imo, it is the only way to end the year

i wish PJ would get that.

My friends went to the Lucinda Williams show. Said it was amazing and rockin and all that good stuff. The Viper Room is tiny, so to seeher in such an intimate setting would have been awesome. Afterwards she just hung out at the bar drinking red wine and chatted it up with fans. How fucking cool.

Can't believe Gov't Mule was missed. They played the Beacon in NY. Great show from what I hear... I could only make it to the warm-up show on the 28th.

The Phish show on NYE was unreal. One of the best shows I have ever been to.

the phish new years run is the best stuff phish has done in a long time, i'd say maybe even since before the hiatus in 00. i thought the halloween run was gonna be tough to beat, but it got blown out of the water.

AGREED!!! After 10/31.. I was wondering how much I should spend for the NYE run, especially after spending 3 hours at a TM booth and still getting shut out. Blew my paycheck. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

Still waiting for a legitimate Mike's ;),but I agree this was the best singular run of shows Phish has done since the reunion at least - in terms of post-hiatus, the only competition it has is with February 03 - one of the all time best Phish months imo.
  • I was supposed to go to Atlanta for the Zac Brown Band concert...but didn't.

I did however listen to the Drive By Truckers show on Sirius radio....from 2,000 miles away it sounded like one hell of a time to me

Yeah, Phish looks and sounds like it was so much fun. Glad to hear those guys on top of their game once again.
