While some (okay most or all) of their earlier work was radio friendly you forget what happened after they met Bob Dylan, Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, and the White Album. Listen to While My Guitar Gently weeps and tell me / anyone they sucked. That is all, good day.
  • Where as I don't believed The Beatles sucked completely I will say they are extremely overrated. I've only heard 2 of their albums: Sgt Pepper and Rubber Soul. While I absolutely despised Sgt Pepper I loved Cocker's cover of With a little help from my friends. Rubber Soul (which I've been told is their best record) was pretty easy to listen to but tbh it's not great - when I was forcing my self to listen I was finding it acceptable but I'm never drawn back to listen to that record, when I've tried again to listen to it I just skip everything tbh - apart from In My Life which is an absolute gem of a song. So I would say the Beatles had a few good/great songs (like As My Guitar Gently Weeps) but as far as I can tell they've not got a solid album and were a pretty mediocre band. I'd take The Stones or The Who over The Beatles any day and of course I feel Pearl Jam are Light Years ( ;) ) ahead of The Beatles.

I just can't believe what I'm reading from some of you... You guys need some music history lessons to learn how important The Beatles are to modern music. Even when they were singing "Twist and Shout", they were bringing music to another level.

And it's true, the day The Beatles met Bob Dylan... everything changed once again; Revolver was born!

Ignorance is bliss, they say... And why am I wasting my time with this post...

  • I do somewhat agree that the Beatles are overrated. I do respect their place in music history but just wanted to post a reply to the poster that said they didn't have any solid albums. I think you should give Let It Be an honest chance because that is the album that got me into them. Still think their pre-drug stuff wasn't that good and bordered on bubble gum pop.

While I am not a fan of thier music, I do understand their importance to music, and especially rock music. But, you can't force someone to like a form of art. I never been able to get into them.

It's a generation thing. Most rock and roll prior to 65 was bubble gum music. Songs about girls/boys, cars, surfing, whatever. It wasn't til 65 when Bob Dylan showed up at the Newport Folk Festival with a rock band(Paul Butterfield Blues Band + Al Kooper), backing him up that rock and roll changed forever.

  • The Beatles were the first to really push the envelope and although their earlier music may sound corny now it/they were revolutionary back then...

Their later music, after skyrocketing to stardom, dabbling in hallucinogenics, meeting much deeper artists (IE Bob Dylan) still can contend with today's music in terms of depth and controversy...

Maybe I'm just saying this cause like my parents I feel that the music of my time is the best and that today's music sucks, but I feel like there is no envelope to be pushed anymore, the music industry as a whole is in shambles and most artists only make music as a pay-check and for fame and not because it's something they love...

To just dismiss the Beatles, probably the most influential band ever, is not only ridiculous... It's stupid...

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, of course, but it's hard to take an opinion about a band seriously when it includes: 1) a misquotation of the band's lyrics (see the "Drive My Car" quote in the OP); 2) an incorrect reference to the title of a very famous song (see "As [sic] My Guitar Gently Weeps"; or 3) an admission that the person offering the opinion has only heard two of the band's albums when the band produced over 200 songs.

Was the OP loved as a child? Did the OP not read the whole lyrics for "Drive My Car"? The whole song is a metaphor for sex:

Asked a girl what she wanted to be,
She said, baby can't you see?
I wanna be famous, a star of the screen,
But you can do something in between.

Baby, you can drive my car.
Yes, I'm gonna be a star.
Baby, you can drive my car and maybe I'll love you.

I told the girl that my prospects were good.
    She said, baby, it's understood
Working for peanuts is all very fine,
But I can show you a better time.

Baby, you can drive my car.
Yes, I'm gonna be a star.
Baby, you can drive my car and maybe I'll love you.
Beep beep mm, beep beep yeh!

Baby, you can drive my car.
Yes, I'm gonna be a star.
Baby, you can drive my car and maybe I'll love you.

I told that girl I could start right away,
And she said, listen, babe, I've got something to say.
Got no car, and it's breaking my heart,
    But I've found a driver and that's a start.

Today, some rappers say something like, "I took that girl's pussy and fucked it all night." The Beatles had to be creative and figure out a way to use sex in their song without people knowing it.

As someone stated before, The Beatles revolutionized music. Every album they got better and better.

Their meeting with Bob Dylan on August 28, 1964 changed everything and you can hear the Dylan influence on the album "Beatles For Sale", then "Help!", and then, of course, the masterpiece, "Rubber Soul", where The Beatles helped create folk-rock.

The Beatles had a response to everything. Dylan released "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Highway 61 Revisited" and The Beatles responded with "Rubber Soul" (the greatest album ever, in my opinion). That was 1965. Dylan released "Blonde on Blonde" and The Beach Boys released "Pet Sounds" and The Beatles responded with "Revolver". That was 1966. The Beatles ended all competition with "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in 1967. The Beatles said if it wasn't for "Pet Sounds", there wouldn't be a "Sgt. Pepper".

Brian Wilson said it was "Rubber Soul" that made him want to make "Pet Sounds" and 'compete' with The Beatles; it wasn't until he heard "Strawberry Fields Forever" that he just stopped competing with them and stopped making the "Smile" album.

Bob Dylan said the early work of The Beatles blew him away because of the chords and the chord changes they used. He said he had never heard anything like it before.

Also, if it wasn't for The Beatles, the Stones wouldn't be what they became. Their albums while The Beatles were a band was the same exact thing, just released six months later.

    Sorry for the rambling.

I agree, neither have I,despite many tries they just don't do anything for me,simple as that. But I often get flamed for my opinion like they are untouchable by unappreciative hands :?
