Is that NZ$7.87 or US? I thought fuel was reasonable in NZ when we were over there.

We have just hit £5.93 per UK gallon.
    US $9.67
    NZ $13.028

US gallon in the UK would be US$8.06
    That would suck!

It looks like we are on our way to $4 here in the States. It was $3.45 yesterday. My pickup averages about 15 mpg and it will soon cost $100 to fill up the tank. :( Too bad I need it for work and to get through the snowy winters.
    Would suck???
It does suck and is one reason why I now work from home.

And they are using that knob end in Libya as an excuse to cripple us a bit more in the coming week... Some say at least another 5p a litre will be added. That's what 30cents a gallon more??

OK. Where I live I'm paying $7.759 for a US gallon. I'm moving over.

Yip and we pay $7.87!!! Although we buy it by the litre it has just hit $2.08 per litre, which is hitting us hard, we are a 2 car family and we need our cars due to a non existant public transport system.

Thats NZ$7.87. Petrol has been pretty bad here for the past 5 or so years, mostly due to tax increases more than oil prices - although obviously now oil prices are a big factor too.

Ignoring the exchange rate, the cost is all relative to how much you earn. Our petrol bill accounts for nearly 10% of our net earnings a week! I am looking to downsize to a smaller car this year but my car needs some work done first.

The bus this morning was at least 4 times busier... I'm assuming because of the gas prices.

    that's one upside, I guess :?
Maybe it'll start forcing cities to invest in better public transit!!

I don't think we've seen anything yet. I know there are people that get excited about high gas prices because they think it will be good for the environment. While I agree with that philosophy to an extent, the collateral damage will be devastating to the average consumer. Since most people aren't very self-sufficient you're going to see hunger start to be a bigger and bigger issue, and when that happens all bets are off.

If truck drivers are paying $5+ a gallon to stock up grocery stores, what do you think that's going to do to the food prices? I will not be surprised to see everything at least triple and quadruple in price. There's no way it can't. Then you have independent truckers and smaller companies who will close down because they can't compete with bigger companies who hedge fuel. This means there will be even less transportation. Before you know it, your $100 grocery bill is now $400, maybe even $500. It's gonna get ugly.

Petrol has just hit $2.16 a litre here which works out as $8.17 a US gallon. The unrest in Libya is blamed but only 2% of the worlds oil comes from there. The main reason for the prices sky rocketing is the investors. Supply and demand have nothing to do with the price, it is the damn trading.

The Real Reason Gas Prices Are Soaring
Have you ever wondered why when you go to the gas station to fill up the family car, the price of gas at the pump has just jumped 25 cents a gallon over the past three days? Perhaps you thought the oil companies were just being greedy. Or you believed the nightly news pundit who said that gas prices went up because the crisis in Libya was affecting supplies of oil. One professional oil trader says that you'd be wrong on both counts.

Dan Dicker, who has spent nearly three decades in the oil market, has a profoundly disturbing explanation of why the price of oil, and the gasoline that comes from the crude product, has risen so dramatically in recent months. It turns out, Dicker says, that the price has nothing to do with supply and demand for oil. It's the financial market for oil, filled with both professional speculators and amateur investors betting on poorly understood oil exchange-traded funds, who have ratcheted up the price of gas to such sky high levels.

"There is no supply issue going on here - what you have is the perception of the possibility of a supply issue," Dicker says. "A whole bunch of people are pouring money into an oil market trying to take advantage of what they perceive to be a real risk in supply. It's a marketplace that I argue should not be allowed to be wagered on like a stock or bond."

Dicker notes that Libya produces only 1.3 million barrels of oil a day, just a tiny fraction of the world oil market. Even if Libyan crude were lost to the world market in the current turmoil, and there is no sign that it is, Saudi Arabia has 5 million barrels a day to use in case of an emergency.

you must live in the north island cuz it's been that and more in the south island for some time ...

as for the collateral damage of high gas prices - the reality is gas (especially in north america) is a function of a manipulated economic system ... people think they need gas to be cheap but the reality is that gas is priced to reap max profits for oil companies and nothing more ... doesn't anyone ever wonder why these companies make billions and billions in profits and yet continue to get corporate welfare day in and day out?

I watch a lot of Top Gear and there are a lot of neat fuel efficient cars available in your country (including models by Ford) that don't see the light of day in the states. I don't know if it's because fuel has been cheap enough that the US public wouldn't consider these smaller models but there appears to be better fuel saving technology available out there, yet the US market is denied access to it.

Also, what were you paying a year ago for gas....uh, I mean petrol?

    Last year it was about £1 a litre I think. Now it's about £1.36. That's a guess.

We do have a lot of fuel efficient cars, even some of the larger vehicles have excellent fuel economy. Mine is 8 years old but does a fair amount to the gallon. The main problem we have though is too many of us living on this small island. All that stopping and starting during busy times screws up the consumption.

With the politicos forever talking green issues I'm stunned you don't have access to the same cars we do.

We were paying $1.77 a litre this time last year, now its $2.19. Tax went up by 10c a litre in the last year so that doesn't help. I would love to drive a fuel effient small car, unfortunately I can't afford to upgrade / downsize.

$4 where I'm at. I can't even fill my tank up all the way because the pump shuts off at $75.

consider that's just a dollar more than bottled water which comes from the tap ... this shit requires major extraction costs, transportation pipelines, transport, refinery, huge executive salaries and bonuses, and wars to be fought over ... it's a steal at $4 a gallon!
