That's a bit of a sweeping statement. I'm sure the band would disagree.

"Back when we were on tour last spring,we asked everybody to take a cut (in profits) - we were taking a cut, and we said if we're gonna work with you, you have to do the same, because we're not going to take as much money from our fans as everyone would like. Ticketmaster didn't want to take a cut. We felt the service charge they were asking for was disproportionate to the ticket price we were offering. If you have a $55 Rolling Stones ticket and there's a $3-6 service charge, okay. But ours was an $18.50 ticket, and now all of a sudden it's a $24 ticket. That's not right. I just want people to be able to see our shows. It's extremely important that it's available to everyone, that if they'd like to attend, they'd be able to. Also, when you start having $50 tickets, all of a sudden you're changing your audience. And that's a frightening thought, playing only to people that can afford a $50 ticket." Eddie Vedder 1994

Yes, I know he said this 16 years ago, but the point is that he said it, and really meant it then.
He clearly no longer feels this way toward the fans. It's quite obvious.

I understand that but why the complete turn around? It's unfortunate that people changed with experience, greed and materialism.
I’m not blaming Pearl Jam it seems all humans change once they receive fortunes.

whether you receive fortune or not
do you not want to provide for the best life possible for your children once you're gone
after all your choices are not necessarily theirs
    that's how i'm seeing it
not necessarily that they "changed" as that they've become family men

There's a difference between securing your children's futures economically, and securing it to the point that their inheritance is quite more than substantial. One can only imagine exactly how well off these guys are. I just don't buy the whole "they're looking out for their kids". I'm sure their kids will do just fine.

well, ya it was a while back, but if you really feel that way, jean, write them a letter...they just might read it.
i would complain too, as i'm a poor person these days, but it wouldn't be sincere, because although i'd LOVE to have cheaper tix and go to more shows, i have to admit i'll find a way to pay for it no matter how much it is. its people like me that your point is about right? i understand it. i really do. i don't have the money to spend on $200 ticket pairs. i did that earlier this year and caught 3 shows. plus hotel for the overnight (luckily there were a group of us splitting hotel cuz NYC is outta this world), and i paid for that for a while. it was money that could have been better spent elsewhere .... like bills and stuff. but i try to look at it this way...i don't do anything for myself all year long. my money is always spent on household, kids and grandkids. that's been my life for the last 30+ years...so once a year (or less), PJ rolls around, and its expensive yes, and i shouldn't spend it, no, but i do, and i will continue to, because its the ONLY thing i get for me. and i think that's how it might go for many of us. I'm sorry tickets are so high. its hard for me too. and i hope you do get to catch a show. i think you need to...just for you :)
it used to be the grateful dead, but back then i had more money..it seems like but probably not, relatively speaking. i don't think i would be so upset about missing a dead show as i am about missing a pj show though. hmmm...odd..i just thought about that.
    peace,

I understand your POV, but I'm at a point where, although the music will always mean a lot to me, paying sky-high prices for concert tickets for anyone is not a priority. I've adjusted to enjoying bands that keep prices low and play in smaller (which provides a better show anyway) venues.
Michael Franti, for instance, got bigger and more popular while playing with John Mayer last year and could have commanded larger venues and higher tix prices. But because his fans begged him to keep playing smaller venues, he actually has, and his prices have gone back down.

People you might as well face it, the days when musicians got into the business because all they really wanted to do was create music, and money was secondary is pretty much over, and pearl jam is no exception. The 40/50 fees for fan club inclusion is proof of that. I think quite honestly most people joined for the annual vinyl single and the ability to buy tickets first, since the tours are small and getting expensive, that incentive is now gone and the annual single for the 20 dollar membership is now mp3 download. I kind of hope this back fires and membership decreases, but I doubt it will.
