Michael Vick wants to own a dog

Michael Vick, who was banned by the judge who sentenced him on dogfighting charges from ever owning another dog, says he misses being a dog owner and would like to have one as a pet someday.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback, interviewed by NBC News and the website TheGrio.com, said he and his family miss having a dog. He said he wants to show people that he can be a responsible pet owner and that he would not take the opportunity for granted.

"I would love to get another dog in the future. I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process," Vick said, according to NBC News and TheGrio.com. The full interview was scheduled to be shown on TheGrio.com on Wednesday.

On Tuesday at a Philadelphia-area charter school, where Vick was speaking out against dogfighting, he was asked if he would return to the Eagles next season.

"I would hope so," Vick said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "A lot of things have to happen. A lot of things have to take place. ... But hopefully I'm a Philadelphia Eagle next season."

Vick has led the Eagles to a share of the NFC East division lead and resurrected a career many thought was all but over after he went to federal prison for funding a dogfighting ring. The operation trained pit bulls to fight and killed dogs that did not perform well in training sessions.

Vick told NBC News and TheGrio.com. that he wants to show that that part of his past is behind him.

"I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love and my passion for animals; I think it would be outstanding," Vick said in the interview. "If I ever have the opportunity again I will never take it for granted.

"I miss having a dog right now. I wish I could. My daughters miss having one, and that's the hardest thing: Telling them that we can't have one because of my actions," Vick said in the interview.

If they let him, they need to provide the most feminine dog ever. Some type of poodle.

Why? Has his football playing shown that he will now respect dogs?

What exactly is the reason to change the punishment? Because his kids want a dog?

In a related story, a pedaphile wants to work at the daycare center.
  • ummmm... yeah... that's something that shouldn't happen.

Things you do in your life have consequences... you commit a crime with a gun, you aren't allowed to legally own a gun again... you abuse children, you can never have a job where you have contact with kids (but unfortunately you can have more kids). You abuse animals, you shouldn't be allowed to own any.

When you think about it, I'm 100% positive that this dog will be treated better then most humans and there is no chance it will be used in criminal sport.

If he is allowed, one of the stipulations is that it needs to be a pound puppy. If you are against Vick getting a dog, are you OK with a potential candidate being put to death by lethal injection instead?

Even though he's doing all the right things at the moment only time really can make a difference. I want to see that he's truly repentant for his heinious crimes and that he finishes his probation. Now after that is complete and done so without incident which includes anything from a speeding ticket, then I would reconsider him having, keeping and caring for a dog.

a man did some time for guns(selling without a license) now he can never own a gun again and thats fine,
so why would the courts allow vick to own a dog again especially considering his dogs where trained to kill each other ?

actually, i am unaware of his punishment ... if it is to never have dogs ... i'm fine with that too ...

i do believe in forgiveness and rehabilitation ... people make mistakes all the time - if we had no room for forgiveness or compassion - what kind of world would we live in? I am obviously only speculating but I would suspect that he would be an excellent dog owner now that he has been made aware of his actions. I don't condone what he did whatsoever but there are a lot of SHITTY pet owners in this world that treat animals almost as bad. If we can have one good one - it's better for the animals.

True Dat, I think he would be a good pet owner just at the ed of his probation. Have you seen some of the treatment of animals on I think it's called the Animal Planet Network. Those animals have to be taken from those people and they are many times arrested.

As a philly season ticket holder it sickens me that not only is he our starting qb but he's doing so good. yes i luv being in 1st place and luv the excitement when desean goes long but i have only been to 2 games this year and have hardly watched on tv because of him. he should NEVER be allowed a dog. let him live with not getting what he wants and more importantly let him face his kids everyday knowing they want one and he can't give it to them.

You say "NOW that he has been made aware of his actions".

How was he made aware of his actions? Did somebody have to actually tell him what he was doing?
Did somebody actually have to tell him that what he was doing was wrong?

Did Michael Vick then say "Oh Crap, really? killing dogs is wrong? Damn, well now that I am aware of that, I should be just excellent at not killing dogs"

i am reading a book called the narcissistic epidemic ... long story short - the rate of narcissism is growing at the same rate as obesity in the US ... guys like Vick and Lebron James are extremely narcissistic in that they truly believe they are better than anyone else ...

you would think it should be obvious to someone that what he was doing was wrong but all you need to look is the average personal debt americans live under ... you would think living beyond one's means would be obvious - but we got a huge subprime mortgage crisis ...

there's been a huge generation of kids growing up having everyone blow smoke up their ass and now you multiply 100 x for someone like Vick ... again, not condoning ...

I hate Vick probably more than most people ........but because there are tons of dogs that need homes, I would consider letting him have one. There would have to be mandatory check ins on a monthly basis though. Pound dogs only.

That is the difference between this and guns. Or comparing it to a child molester. The guns are not living or at risk to be put down. Dogs are being put down everyday.

you would have hard time convincing my Father of that, he cares for and treats his animals better than he treated his kid's and loves owning his guns.

But there are plenty of kids in bad foster homes or whatever... should someone who is a convicted child abuser be able to adopt one of them because he might be rehabilitated and could give them a better home?

I don't believe Vick. His words.
My feeling, he would say anything that promotes himself personally or as a player.
He can't back up his words with true feeling.
I don't think he gives a damn about dogs, now or ever.
It would be grand if we could stop the cycle though and allow his children to love and respect animals.
This here is where the problem lies. His kids deserve to learn that love. It's a love like no other.

    I say Yes!
He's served his time, he's paid fines, he's put in many hours of community service, and now he is "volunteering" his personal time to educate others on animal abuse.
Yes he did committed a horrible act, but do you really think he's stupid enough repeat it, really?
What does he have to prove at this point? He's getting a huge contract, he's probably going to receive the MVP award from the NFL, and he's probably going to bring a super bowl win to Philadelphia. He made a huge mistake and I believe he has learned from it.

I have no problem with him owning a dog now, in fact I bet if he is allowed this next dog he owns will be the most pampered pet on the planet (5xfast). The fact he may get a big contract he will do nothing to jeopardize, he will probably go out ofhis way to show his "rehabilitation"

I would probably not want to be that dog after he retires from the NFL though...
