Let me start by saying that I've been playing bass for 15 years, so I'm a bit biased, but I think Jeff did a remarkable job of channeling John Entwistle for this performance. I have always been a huge fan of Jeff. He's by far my 2nd favorite member of the band(behind Ed). I think he's such an underrated bass player. He's one of the best in rock as far as I'm concerned. One of the trademarks of a great bass player is to know when to play, not just what to play, and Jeff has such a great feel and sense of groove. He's an excellent fretless player as well(just listen to 'Ten';). Let's give him the credit he deserves...

Bravo, Jeff...keep on groovin...

Yeah, you only get credit today as a bass player for being flashy, which is too bad. :(

I agree. Guys like Jeff, Peter Hook from Joy Division/New Order, Steve Harris from Iron Maiden, & Simon Gallup from The Cure are the glue that hold their bands together. They write such great bass lines that really anchor the song.

he does, he does, he does! :)
i just watched the VH1 link a bit earlier, and wished i could've watched jeff's fingers fly the whole time.

i'm no musician, but married to a bass player who's been playing 20+ years...and i know what you mean. :D i find the real me to be such a showcase of a bass player's technique and ability, and love to listen/watch my husband play it amongst other faves. it really IS such a bass player's song.

so i most definitely looked forward to seeing/hearing jeff rip it up! he really was so fantastic. they all were really, but being such a bass-driven tune, was so happy to see jeff have a moment to shine! i truly love pearl jam covering the who...probably more than i love the who. blasphemy to some, i know, but we're not all mega who fans.

anyhoo...absolutely KUDOS jeff! you rock!

Rock bassist perhaps, but nobody is even in the same class as Jaco Pastorius.

I was very amazed with his playing. The very first note I heard from his bass I knew it was going to have a great bassline

Also, I am the same exact way with Matt. I love how unpredictable he is. Sometimes he plays basic, sometimes hes off the hook. He never plays a song the same way. Matts drumming in 2008 is incredible. After 10 years with the band, you think hed be less intense since he's older. His playing in 08 is some of the best ive heard from him. Not just in PJ, but the best period. The drumming in "the real me" is incredible from him. K

Kudos to matt and Jeff, this was their song. (Oh and Ed's vocals, were honestly the best I have heard from him....like...period.)

I thought Jeff did a great job of playing John Entwistle's bass line... he stuck to the original pretty strongly. The original bass line was one of the best I've ever heard... and Jeff played it almost note for note perfectly, but he was simply imitating greatness. (This is in no way saying anything bad about Jeff, he did a great job on a great bass line).

However, I was much more impressed by Matt, who played a much more original drum line that was absolutely incredible.

See, that's why I have such tremendous respect for Jeff. He's one of the guys who've understood what bass is all about. Jeff's playing is rock solid and groovy... Wish more bass players were like him instead of just doing root notes or trying to compete with the lead guitarist.

"The Real Me" is a challenging song to play on the bass. It took alot of balls for PJ to play this as it was one of John's signature songs and one that Who Fans pay very close attention to.

I've been at many Who shows where the crowd has been less than pleased with Pino Paledino (Sp?) and his treatment of the song. John and Keith left giant shoes to fill in regards to The Who's rhythm section and it's definately a challenge for anyone to try and step up and play those songs; much less in front of not only Who fans, but Roger and Pete as well.

After watching this clip I can safely say that Jeff Ament really did "The Ox" justice with his rendition and not only Roger and Pete, but Who fans in general will probably agree that Pearl Jam kicked major ass on this song.

Kudos to Matt Cammeron and Eddie as well.

We should all be very proud of them for this performance

The Who had an immensely talented rhythm section and Jeff and Matt did them proud. Blistering performance!
