  • Amazing job, man. Makes me wish I could do luthier work rather than simply intonation adjustments and string changes!

Once again I forgot to take pics last night. I will try tonight. I've had EV on the brain and just haven't remembered. Looks and sounds so much better now.

Mike's are bone-stock original. Then again, that means they are original late-50's Strat pups, which means they are worth 20x what Fralins are worth.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

since they are over 50 years old do you think he has had them rewired at some point? it is hard to imagine 50 year old wiring holding up so well with all that that guitar has been through.

A good point, sure. A lot of older pickups get breaks in the winding, or the poles might get de-magnetized, or it just gets exposed to so much humidity and moisture (sweat) that there's rust. But all the info about Mike's 50's Strats has them with stock pickups and no repairs to the pups themselves (stuff has been fixed on those guitars, for sure). And it wouldn't be unusual for a guitar that old (especially if it was the A1 guitar of a guy who can afford good guitar techs and climate control) to hold up for 50 years. Pickups are pretty simple items, no moving parts, so it's not hard to keep them working.

Exactly. At this point I don't think it's a guitar he touches until recording sessions start and tours happen. He didn't even use it for Tres Mountains. I did like the turquoise one he used though. Looked like the Eric Johnson model but probably wasn't.

Again I forgot to take new pictures. I just set a reminder in my phone so I do it tonight. hahahahahahaha

  • Thanks guys. With the relic'ng, the callaham bridge assembly and the fralin pickups, it's cost quite a bit. Plays great though.

    is she your number 1?

i would love to have something like that done to a guitar and really dump a bunch of money into one guitar to just play that one all the time. but i gig with 4 guitars now and play them all pretty equally over the course of a show. once this band thing is all said and done i could probably sell some of my herd of 11 and just invest in a number 1 like the one you have here.

that thing is like a work of art or something that you could display on the wall if you are not gigging regularly. at least i would do that

  • I'm definitely playing. I haven't gigged with it since I really haven't had a band in quite a long time. I just started jamming again and looking to get out to gigging. I will definitely play it because honestly I have to since Mike isn't putting his away. hahahahahaha

I also have a plus top Epiphone Les Paul(amber) that I use. Trying to build the arsenal back up. Tele next and then probably an SG.

I appreciate the good words and calling it a work of art. He definitely did an unreal job on it.

well now you know the next step, build a new band and get some gigs!

see, i can't let go of anything that i have now because i have a very well rounded sound between my guitars and rig and as soon as i let something go i will come across a new band/project where i will need the guitar that i just sold off lol....that is the problem with thinning the herd, that you might need to expand it again and you can never find something as good as you had just had and let go. it is definitely a paradox, this guitar thing we have...

perhaps one day my friend can call bill nash and ask him to build me something like the strat that you had done. he was relicing les pauls recently so that is tempting but at $5000 i can not swing it at the moment....unfortunately nash does not take custom orders anymore :(

seriously man, people here really appreciate what you have done to that guitar. to me its art. but it is a tool as well. and that is the best kind of art :ugeek:

  • Thanks buddy. We have been rehearsing for a month now and have 6 originals as we speak and once we get to 10-12 we are going to hit the studio. I'm touring a local studio that friends of mine have used for their albums and they sound great. TriTonix is the name.

The pickguard wear on that is just off as is the upside down U-shape on the bottom which looks way too big. Looks too sanded in my opinion and the sanded parts are way too clean with the natural wood color.

Not bad though. The guy that dis mine is the guy guy that does all the big time SRV"s you see at guitar shows and the EVH guitars. He actually got a call from EVH's manager telling him not to sell them anymore because they were too exact.

The price was the same for mine though. $1500

Vic Geanopulos did mine. Here is a link to their page

What's your opinion on the Epiphone Les Paul? I have an Epiphone SG Custom 61' reissue in antique ivory and gold it's a beautifully built guitar. It needs a little fine tuning yet but still, compared to Gibson prices it is real value for money. I've got my eye on their Les Paul Custom (Black Beauty) with gold hardware too so I'm interested in how your LP plays and sounds. Your strat is out of this world by the way! There's something about a Strat with a worn look, I'd love a replica of Rory Gallagher's one. I set my sights on a roadworn Tele a couple of years back but wasn't that impressed with the finish so instead went for a model I'd admired for over 20 years, the Tele 72' Custom, all black with maple neck and fingerboard. Another Fender beckons yet, probably a butterscotch blonde Tele modified with a Bigsby trem. Best of luck with your songwriting and playing... :)

I would LOVE the Monterey strat.

I really like my Epi Les Paul, it sounds great. I too can't afford the Gibson prices and those worn Les Pauls are ok, not great at all. the 72 tele is badass. A tele is next for me.

Good luck to you as well, I don't think you will be disappointed in the black beauty

talk about a worn strat, check out this firecaster.....the nash guitar company had a fire at their shop in 2006 and some of the stuff got burnt pretty badly. i have played this one a few times and it plays like a dream...it is definitely a different take on the reliced look.... 8-)
