    good luck.

i've looked and thought about getting a new one, but keep fixing the my old one.

if i was going to buy today, i would try and get a 4 cycle. always having to get oil to mix with the gas is a little annoying.

My best advice is to get one a little bigger than you think you need. The days when the snow is extra heavy (or mixed with ice) you'll be glad you have the extra power.

I purchased a cub cadet a couple years back and have been very happy with it. pd $899 for it..26"..maybe 30" cant remember...But I HAD a smaller craftsman from sears and it just didnt do the job and I spent more time shoveling and cleaning it out before it seized up because of the cold and wet snow...I would advise going bigger than you need as well...No sure how much snow you get where you are, but for me, even if I use it 4-5 times a year it is worth it..my driveway is 2 cars wide and 5 cars long!! hahaha....Good Luck!!

  • I went through this last year and settled on an Ariens 520E. I didn't want one that was too big to easily store in the garage, but I wanted more oomph than a single-stage design. In an area where they use the words "lake effect" often, you need that big toothy auger.

I looked today at Sears 24" 179cc 2 stage $599...Im on the fence with that one

Im in New Jersey so we typically don't get nailed for snow but last year was brutal

I bet my dad can get on board with this. I am a sufferer of childhood snow-blower abuse. :(

I think he coaxed me into coming outside with him not to help, but simply to have fun while he worked.

IMO, you can get away with a single stage. i have a smaller single stage that does well with everything except really wet snow and heavy snow that the plow guy drops at the end of the drive. but adjusting the belt control seemed to have helped.

one of my neighbors has a single stage that is a little bigger than mine, and it chews up everything.

now this all assumes you live in a urban setting and don't have a 1000ft drive. i've got about 30ft of driveway that is car lanes wide and 125 ft of side walk.

aroudn here the single stages that i have looked at have a small and big engine. i wouldn't buy the small engine. i think the small is 123cc and the large is the 179cc for the singels

    edit
just looked at mine. it's an old craftsman 3HP 20 inch. if it was 4.5HP or more, it would be rockin. but it was free....

  • Is it bad that I dont know exactly what a snow blower is? I assume it's something like a wood chipper or something...it eats and breaks up snow/ice on one end and shoots it out the back??? Sorry...Florida boy, born & raised.

    Yeah...sure.... keep rubbing it in

Pretty much what you said is what it is...it throws it to the side though not out the back. You wouldn't want the snow being thrown in your face as you're walking behind it ;) That part is directional so you can change the area the snow is thrown to...When I was growing up it was usually aimed at us kids
