it depends on how you view the word "selfish" ... ultimately conservatives think about themselves or their personal interests above everyone else's ... liberals tend to think that what is good for the whole is good for them ...

See - I think that is horribly misguided to the point of ignorance. It is possible to think conservatively from the standpoint that it is in EVERYONE'S best interest or the good of the whole.

    explain how so ...

do a lot of you think that being a conservative is based on ignorance?

Ignorance, selfishness, and a complete lack of imagination.

can you elaborate? what makes it ignorance? Using conflict theory and talking about class warfare and all that aside, what makes me ignorant, selfish, and have a complete lack of imagination?

Personal comments are not tolerated on the board.

And also, I don't know you, so It would be impossible for me to describe what motivates you personally, even if I did want to get banned.

I am not talking about anyone in particular, I was using me as an example of a conservative, but I could have said what makes a conservative ignorant selfish and have a complete lack of imagination. I know that is what you think, I am asking why you think that. It isn't anything personal.

    Conservative Thinking

Palin Accuses Obamas Of Spending Too Much Time Listening To A Preacher’s “Rants Against America And White People”

In another leak from Sarah Palin’s new book, the former governor takes aim at Barack and Michelle Obama, questioning their love of country and whether they were too influenced by someone she regards as anti-white.

In leaked extracts of her new book, Mrs Palin delves into the minefield of racial politics, arguing that the first African American US president is among those who regarded the conservative tea party movement as racially prejudiced and who thinks that “America is a fundamentally unjust and unequal country”.

As proof, she dredged up a quote from a 2008 campaign speech in which Mrs Obama said “for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country”.

Mrs Palin went on to say: “I guess this shouldn’t surprise us, since both of them spent almost two decades in the pews of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church listening to his rants against America and white people.”

Lost in Palin’s take is that Michelle Obama explained that what made her proud was the involvement of young people in the electoral process.

For the first time in my lifetime, I am seeing people rolling up their sleeves in way that I haven’t seen and really trying to figure this out, and that’s the source of pride I was talking about.

Palin also puts down talent shows, oblivious to the fact that her daughter is on one.

Are you talking about the same Sarah Palin who criticized Obama for trying to be a celebrity when she's on every TV show she can get her smiling mug on, and who is criticizing Obama for his association with Jeremiah Wright while at the same time defending Bristol and her baby by saying people shouldn't be judged by the people they've associated with in the past? That Sarah Palin?
And I listen for the voice inside my head... nothing. I'll do this one myself.
  • Personally, I always thought it was interesting that liberals tend to be college educated whereas conservatives aren't - so when it's convenient, conservative politicians attack liberals for being elitists, and try to point out how the elitist liberals don't understand the needs of the everyday, common conservative voter from the middle of nowhere who doesn't have a college education and has worked a blue collar job his entire life...

... without ever bringing up the fact that the conservative politicians who will "speak on behalf of the people" all have college degrees, went to Ivy League schools, come from well-to-do backgrounds, and have no more of an idea of what it's like to work 15 hours a day on a farm in the Midwest than liberal politicians do.

I don't know what makes a conservative ignorant, selfish, and have a complete lack of imagination. Maybe they were born that way, or maybe they become that way after living on the Earth for a few years.

Maybe the answer lies with their experience of childhood potty-training.

right wing mentality is based on fear.

fear of immigrants, gays, terrorists, hell. it affects everything, domestic policy, foreign.

left wing mentality, true leftists, see that if you treat people the way they you would want to be treated, you have nothing to fear.

there is a reason terrorists leave canada alone. right wing canadian politicians are still farther left than most any US politician.

this is exactly what I was afraid of, and that is the melding together of religious fundamentalist thinking with conservative fiscal policy and calling it all conservative.
I really wish they would have a different moniker so that someone who does not care about any of those things and certainly isn't afraid of any of them isn't painted with that brush. Or maybe I can start one for people who only want to be left alone by the government when it comes to day to day life stuff, a government that does not promote war and keep debt, and allows people to make choices, even ones that may harm them some day like eating trans fats.
Anyone got any ideas what we can be called?

the entire post was about the mentality behind foreign policy, and given the entire tea parties' belief that a strong military (support r troops), and modern republicans, and past republicans, its not inaccurate.

there is almost no distniction between the fiscal conservative mentality of cutting taxes and taking over the world and christian love thy neighbor take over the world beliefs.

ron paul may be the exception. i'd actually vote for that guy.

you can either inform people about what's wrong with things, or see things like the tea party movement, which favors no taxes and and a balanced the budget. the wrong solution to a very real problem.

Conservative thinking is pretty good, I think. But all things in moderation. A good blend of understanding and community (from the left) and self reliance and independence (from the right) doesn't sound so bad to me at all.

Not at all - but it seems to me as if current politicians are hell-bent on making everything an Us vs Them issue. There's no sense of compromise in D.C., and that's trickling down to the people via the news networks.

Excellent point, cajun. We are zombies who cannot think for ourselves; we need the talking heads to tell us the "truth."
