im pretty sure that there was a write up about it. but from what i remember, it was by a kid who was a freshman in high school at the time. He slammed the show and said it was uneventful, and that they needed to do more than stand around and just sing/play instruments.

Should have been my first show. I bitched out and went to football practice instead.

it was my first pearl jam show. i was 15. my parents drove my friend and i down to hartford (i grew up in NH). the traffic getting into town was CRAZY. but it was all pearl jam fans. at that time, tickets were distributed through FT&T (fans, tickets, and tours). the tickets looked cool as hell, and when they were mailed to you, they came with a sheet of paper (in a neon color, mine was bright yellow) and it said something like "PEARL JAM - Hartford Meadows October 2, 1996" in huge letters... ANYWAY, stuck in traffic EVERYONE had these things up in their car windows, as a way of telling one another that we were all headed to the same place.
My parents sat at the back of the lawn, away from the action (and were quickly told by security to move away form the fence if they didn't want to get urinated on during the show). My friend, Aaron and i made our way to the barricade between the lawn and the pavilion. The crowd grew VERY intense, chanting, screaming... long before the band hit the stage. it was my second concert (first was Candlebox, and was NOTHING like this) things were getting a little scary, to be honest.
As soon as the first chords of "long road" rang out, the barricade was rushed, and altho bolted into the concrete, was toppled over by the 25,000 in the lawn. a massive crush started about 25 seconds into the show, and remained until the end. As i looked back on the lawn, throughout the show, i could see people from the outside scaling the walls to get in.. it was an amazing site.
many people got banged up that night.. there were mild riots.. it made the news.. my friend Aaron was never allowed to go to a concert again.
when i went back in 98', i had 10c seats and i was very close to the stage.. i went to the show shirtless with a alive guy painted on my chest, and a yield sign painted on my back. the 98' show STARTED with pepper spray and was very "tight".
That night in 1996 changed my life. and it seems that it did that to a few other people. i loved pearl jam before then, since the "alive" video really.. but that first show was so inspiring. Hell, i started playing guitar a few weeks after that show, and now i work as a audio engineer/musician.. i feel like it call came from the inspiration i got that night... which is cool.
