***Hartford Meadows 10/2/1996 Fanviews***

Does anyone know if there are any pictures and videos from these two shows?
That was the original point of the thread, for 1996 and 1998. This ended up turning into a Hartford 1996 fanview thread.

Back in the day when there were no digital cameras
It's called dramatic build-up. hahaha
I was 14 in October '96, just started my freshman year of high school. I had been into Pearl Jam for a few years by that time, but had never really been to a concert before and my parents were wary about the idea of us going to a loud rock show, let alone one in Hartford. But since we couldn't even drive there yet, we were accompanied by my friend's dad, as well as my buddy's cool older cousin. We were so excited in the weeks leading up to the show. So anyway, we all drive down and get to the show. We were on the lawn. The place was packed more than Ive ever seen it before and Ive been to that lawn 20+ times. The band is ripping through songs, its fuckin great. All of a sudden, we notice people had knocked down a portion of the wall and were clashing with security. We learned later that they were using pepper spray on kids, but it caused everyone in the venue to push forward. My friend and I were both pretty scared, this was my first real concert, after all. Amazingly, the show continues and is so great. My world opened up to the the experience of live music and I was changed forever. I remember seeing the poster walking out (by the way, it was $10 I think. Earlier this year I payed wayyy more to finally obtain it). Okay, so story gets even better. We were staying at some Days Inn or something near the venue. We were all amped up after the show, but once I fell asleep, the next thing I remember was waking up to hear a fight between two people. Apparently someone had broken into our room and my friend's older cousin beat the shit out of him and pushed him out the door. We all woke up and the cops took him away. Unbelievable, right? The next morning we headed back home tired, but happy to get a true experience of rock and roll.
So about 2/3 the way through the show I remember Ed throwing a tambourine out into the crowd and people were fighting over it so security went over to break it up. Thats when Eddie brought attention to it and at that point since a good portion of security shifted it was like a wave of people came down the stairs and it was scary. First I was scared for my wife being tiny & maybe being 100lb soaking wet at that point, and second my panic/anxiety kicked in so we decided to move up to the top of the seating area right before the lawn. I remember a cement wall that came up about 1/2 way up my legs and another surge of people from the lawn and getting pushed into that, so at that point we said fuck it, its not worth it if something bad happened that night. I remember hearing Who You Are as we were walking through the parking lot.
The next day I saw a friend who was out on the lawn and he mentioned the cops and the pepper spray, and how it got out of control, it even made the Springfield paper.
Anyways about 5 months later I found someone online that had a soundboard copy of the show so I go to finally hear the last handful of songs that I missed that night.

Oh yeah, the ticket from the 96 show was $15 I believe. No ticketmaster. It was a really cool large ticket, with a map of the world and the image of those happy/sad dramatic faces. So cool.
YES!!! thank u. that indeed.

support act: The Fastbacks
set: Long Road, Hail Hail, Animal, Last Exit, In My Tree, Corduroy, Better Man, Not for You, Jeremy, Red Mosquito, Black, Rearviewmirror, Lukin, Elderly Woman, State of Love and Trust, Footsteps, Alive, Blood/(Fame)/(Noise of Carpet), Porch
enc: Who You Are, Even Flow, Daughter/(The Real Me)/(WMA), Leaving Here, Present Tense, Yellow Ledbetter (with Little Wing lick)
notes: Great long show with a very talkative Ed. During 'Not For You' Ed talks about the meaning of the song, saying it's not directed towards fans, but "a different entity ... someone who thinks they're more important than the people making the music; the people listening to the music; or the music itself. And this is just a reminder that they're not." 'Alive' is started and stopped, because of technical problems. Ed sings 'Footsteps', while everything is straightened out. Part of the fence comes down during 'Blood' and a near riot ensues. (In reality, when the barrier came down, security guards began using pepper spray. The wind was blowing into the pavilion, forcing people with seats to venture nearer the stage to escape it, making it seem like there was a mad rush to the stage.) During 'Porch' Ed tries to calm the crowd down while Mike plays a little part of Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4'. Ed says, "It's like swimming on coral ... there are chairs and people below you, settle down!" "Darlin' you don't want to be up there. That's for the people up front. The people up top you guys go fuckin' nuts! But the people up front settle down." Before they start 'Who You Are', Ed tries to calm the crowd: "It's a little crazy up here. You can sit down, it's cool. I can see you all if you sit, or stand, you can see me too. Ok, the next three words for the next five minutes are Peace and Love." He changes the second line of the second verse saying, "fuck the stage divers." After the song he reiterates, "This is all good. We're going to keep playing but I want to change the policy in the front row here. Security, you listening? Usually you come over the top you get two, three chances. You guys, anybody who comes over the top, you're going out. Just stay on the floor, you got it, ok? You look good where you are. Just stay where you are." For the 'Daughter' tag, Ed gets the crowd to sing along, "like in New York" to 'The Real Me.'
review
I'll always remember dialing in to get tickets (yes kiddies: on the phone) and being given the option to get seats or general admission. I did not know the venue and figured maybe gen ad was like floor seats, so that is what I opted for. Oh well.
At the start of the show we were near the railing, and a few songs into the show is when the pepper spray happened. We were no more than like 100 feet from where shit was going down, so we inadvertently got nailed. We all start tearing up and coughing and decide to head up to the more open lawn area. Best decision we could have made: aside from the douchebag drunk idiot who kept hitting on my sister for a little while, the sound was great and the view wasn't bad either. We had a blast. Being my first PJ show, they hit up most of the songs I was dying to hear.
The show itself holds up well and is easily one of the top few shows of that tour. High energy, Ed is very vocal, and the band is pretty tight. I still maintain the band has not played a better N4U.
I've seen better shows since then, but this one will always be special to me. After not being able to catch them on previous tours for various reasons, Hartford will always be the show where I went from an obsessed fan with a lot of bootlegs to an obsessed fan who would try and go to every show he could. I wish I could go back and re-live this one.
"How's it going out there? I've been thinking about you guys aaaaall day."
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
That picture was in the Record Journal. i had a copy of it on my wall back in high school, but the original was in color.
