  • I picked it up last night after work. So far, I like it but have to give the edge to MW2. The campaign mode is glitchy..the in-game movies hang up sometimes. Also, when you go through the campaign, it feels like your on autopilot half the time... following a lead. You can sit and wait for them to get all the kills then move on through the level.
Multiplayer is fantastic, although it doesn't have the grit that MW2 has.... the lighting and particle effects just aren't as good. The maps are huge though and the "training mode" is a huge boost in helping to learn the choke points and strategy.

I'm not so sure how I feel about the COD money..it's annoying to have to pick and choose what attachments I want on a weapon, but I guess it rewards longer play and better skill. I LOVE that they made the Grenade Launcher attachment the most expensive (3000 COD dollars)... that means less noobs running around grenade spamming all game.

Yeah but its very easy to make a lot of money quickly. In other words, I don't think COD money prevents anyone from using any attachment. I guess I don't get the whole anti-"noob" thing (it took me months to figure out what the heck a "noob" was)...I'm a nerd who played the hell out of MW2 and I continually used grenade launchers. When you play objective based games, defending positions or preventing someone from planting bombs etc, grenade launchers are super helpful. If nothing else, they are no more annoying that dudes with sniper rifles, right? I get annoyed with any player, in general, "noob" or not, who plays objective based games but refuses to play for the objective.

Well my son is a 13 year old but he is non-racist and non-little shit (for the most part). We got it yesterday afternoon and he thinks the new things added like the fact that you can do 2 player on line is fantastic.

Unfortunately he's completely addicted to it now, so I'll ask him when I next see him (probably in a week or so) if he's still enjoying it.

No offense to your 13-year-old; he sounds like a great kid. Unfortunately, I can't say that for all the other young kids that play this game...lot of messed up things get said online while playing this game...

But yes...it is a great game. Tons of fun, even for a full-grown adult like me. :D
I tried playing with my 14yo for the first time yesterday. Boring. I don't think age is going to matter IMO you have to be pretty immature to enjoy these games.

While I agree the campaign seemed much more linear...kinda "going along for the ride", I think the story itself is better. MW2 was just all over the place.
I'm liking multiplayer better too. I like the maps better as well. The guns are a little tricky to get used to (especially at early levels).

Oh, and you just can't beat zombies!! I played zombies for a good 2-3 hours last night! :D

Oh, I guess one thing that I don't like about multiplayer...
    They really made sniping tough.

The maps don't really allow it - There are a few spots, but there aren't many open areas.
The delay it takes to hold the scope steady - I read that Treyarch wanted to reduce or eliminate quick-sniping (which I agree with) but by the time you pull the gun up to line up a shot, let it steady and fire...you're already dead. The only way you can really snipe is if you are camping while holding your breath and even then it's hard because of the lack of sniping spots.
You can pull up a large machine gun, look down the barrel/scope and there is no delay, no player adjustment to steady the gun, but when you do it with a sniper rifle, it moves all over the place...despite the sniper rifle weighing a fraction of what a LMG does.
    Doesn't make much sense.

Ouch. Or maybe you just have to like video games? If you're predisposed to not liking video games, then it will probably seem immature.

Borrowed my brother-in-law's copy and played a TON of Black Ops this weekend (is that cheating, since I said I wouldn't buy it until Christmas?). I like it a lot, but so far don't love it. I got to level 32, so I don't think I've played long enough to say it's worse than MW2, but it just doesn't feel as cohesive. On multiplayer, some of the maps are way too big, and if you're playing in smaller parties it might be a while before you find anyone. Other maps, like Nuketown, are WAY too small/cluttered and are just annoying. Spawning seems pretty random as well, and trying to find a lobby with a party of 6 or more is nigh impossible.

But there is a lot of good stuff too: I like the wager matches a lot, especially the gun game. The money thing is kind of cool. It's annoying to have to buy guns and attachments but it makes the wager matches and contracts addicting. MW2 drove the love of Free for Alls out of me, but I've rediscovered their awesomeness with Black Ops. And some of the kill streaks are interesting (the dogs scared the crap out of me the first time I experienced them), while others are a waste (the slow-moving mortar team is useless). It's definitely tougher to kill than MW2 was, which is a good thing, and a lot of the guns have been nerfed to uselessness - not sure why anyone would use a shotgun anymore (especially as a Primary) b/c you have to super-close to be effective. Compare that to the tac knife, which can launch a blade almost across a map and there is definitely some disparity there. But the customization is cool, and I like the new voting system.

I haven't been invited to boost or join a 10th prestige lobby yet, so that's encouraging. The jury is still out for me my final Black Ops judgement, so I'm just going to keep playing...
I smile, but who am I kidding...

Well said...the game is good (no question there), but the jury is still out on its comparison to MW2. If nothing else, I'd say it may end up being as addictive (good too?) as MW2, if only because the multiplayer offers far more depth (i.e. zombies, wager matches, contracts, player customization etc). With so many nuances, players will have a lot of obsess over. But I agree on the playability...the maps on MW2 were fabulous and the maps on Black Ops are fine but not fabulous. Little differences like that make for good discussion and comparison between the 2 games, but ultimately I think people will be playing Black Ops just as much as they played MW2.

There's some auto-aim assistance on the console version that eases the PC gamer into console shooters ;)

Yeah, I think I'm around level 10 or so on multiplayer.
    I still suck ass!

Playing these kids who are already prestiged and know every inch of every map already doesn't really work well for me...as I'm more or less still wandering around the maps.

I got completely destroyed last night!

Hey, video game peoples - does anyone here play The Show? A) I'm looking for a league B) What do you think of the online play?

Also, to the 13 year old talk - I gotta say, when I used to play MLB2K8 on Xbox, and I hate the microphone crap, but when some douche would play cheap the whole time and then boom I'd win in a walk off, I'd get on that shit and rip them a new asshole. The point of all this crap is to talk trash.

I play The Show from time to time. I get it every year and play the crap out of it during baseball season.
I have other games right now that are occupying my time.

Anyways, it's a great game. Online can still be a little hit and miss. Given the precise timing of the game of baseball, any amount of lag will screw up the game. I have a buddy I play with online and our games are perfect, but other people it's not worth it.

Yeah, the lag sucks. It's the only thing about the 2K games that are better. I'd rather play online non stop than playing against the computer even on Hall of Famer.

I totally hear you about the talking trash, but the problem with 13 year olds that I was referring to is the kids who go on Xbox live and say "n****r," "fa***t" or other racist/sexist/homophobic shit. I could care less how old other players are, but don't use the anonymity of the internet to talk like huge bigots. If its something you wouldn't say to someone else's face, don't suddenly get courage to say it because you're protected from any consequences through the internet. I've got a whole theory about how the internet is also derailing the level of serious discourse in America (rather than fostering or improving it), but I digress. My complaint about "13 year olds" in regards to Xbox Live is that when I hear some player spouting racist/sexist/homophobic slurs, it usually is coming from a player with a high-pitched, prepubescent voice. That's all.

Anyway...I played a ton of multiplayer last night and can't wait to play more. SO addicting! My wife is borderline annoyed with me, so I'll probably have to tone it down a bit. Haha!

That is a ton of fun!

Haha!

    No, I hear you.

I'm not the biggest video game nerd anymore, but I loved watching my old roommate play COD all the time. And I mean all the time. That's all he ever did. The best was he took it so serious, and I'd get high and watch him play and spaz out when some kid would "kill him". The best was when some prepubescent boy shot him in the head and just said something like "F-ckin' b-tch." I was dying. I was like, "ohhhh shiiiit. are you gonna take that, Bob? From some punk kid????" He'd get so pissed.

Haha...that's hilarious. Trash-talking is totally fine; its when kids use the internet to spread racism that I draw the line.

Just think: somewhere, right now, your old roommate is getting called a bitch by some 9 year old and Bob's remembering you, thinking "hell no I'm not gonna take that," as he starts a new game. Right on Bob, right on. :D

    I still suck ass!

Playing these kids who are already prestiged and know every inch of every map already doesn't really work well for me...as I'm more or less still wandering around the maps.

I got completely destroyed last night!
I should play against you now while I have a chance. I only had a small opportunity to play this past weekend and, as usual, got my ass handed to me all night. I did get a sweet head shot on a dude that surprised me on a corner. Blew that dudes friggin head off.
I'm so dangerous I smoke dynamite.

  • I've discovered more and more sniping spots the longer I've played. You're never going to be able to snipe in the small maps or flat ones... such as Nuketown, Firing Range, Grid. However, some of the larger maps like Array, WMD, Jungle, Launch, Radiation... they have great sniping spots if you look for them. You can climb up on the dish in the middle of Array or snipe from the electrical tower west of the facility. On WMD, there are two towers at the back of the map with a gangplank which is great for sniping during Domination. You can see both the A and B flags easily and pick people off with a heat-sensor scope all day.
Crisis has spots on the ocean side of the map, up in the rocks. On Launch, there are two sets of stairs next to the rocket silo which are great for sniping. There are also several other spots on that map that work. Jungle has a prime sniping spot in the center of the map up on a cliff. There are even good spots in Radiation.

The thing is you have to actually snipe and not quickscope kills. This means holding your breath, taking aim and firing. To me, that's more realistic than being able to quickly point and shoot an Intervention and destroy someone in a millisecond. Actual sniping would involve laying down and using a spotter to calculate the wind, distance and sway.

I still prefer running and gunning to sniping though. What does get annoying (especially on Nuketown) is those little remote vehicles. They made those way to easy to get as a reward. They should at least be five kills. I swear I was playing Nuketown and getting bombarded with those every time I spawned. One after the other.
Nuketown is a suck map anyway. People like it though because you get a lot of kills and a lot of points doing it.

I agree with your assessment of the little remote control cars (RC-XDs?). Its so easy to get those and in some maps, its impossible to avoid them. I think someone said it best before when they said Treyarch struggled with the maps on this game. Some of the maps are just too big or spaced in funny ways (i.e. Array - the worst map ever in my opinion), while others are way too crammed and small (i.e. NukeTown, which I happen to enjoy). They did get some maps right: Havana and Cracked are great maps.

Overall, I enjoy this game a lot so far. I can see me playing this as much as I did MW2 (a lot), especially once they release new maps.
