Thumb Sucking......

...........ugh. I have two sons, ages 11 and 15 and they both STILL suck their thumbs!!
I see no end to it. The orthodontist bills are starting and nothing stops these kids. I don't know what to do!!
Any Advice?

my 2nd eldest sucked her thumb til she was 8. when she stopped it took me a couple of months to notice.

i have no advice.

Yeah, my older son only does it at home, when he's tired.
But it's in his mouth, just there.
My younger son, he does it all the time. Doesn't matter where he's at. His thumb just ends up in his mouth.
I've used all the home remedies and he's overcome them all, even that nasty nailpolish stuff they sell at the pharmacy, he got used to the taste.

and if that doesn't work, tell his dates that he is a thumb sucker.

Yikes, dude. I sucked my thumb till I was 7 (which is entirely too old) and my mom made an appointment with the guidance counselor and he got me to stop...though I don't quite remember how he did it.

Have you tried rewarding them if they manage to not do it? I think you need to offer an incentive to give it up since general social disapproval doesn't seem to be working!! Or maybe punish them if you catch them doing it?! I think it's time to take a harder line!

as i sat down and ate two slices of toast
with peanut butter (old fashion PB) and honey.

i was wrong in my earlier statements.
let the kids suck on their thumbs forever.
everyone should do as they will to their own body and body parts; suck thumbs, chew fingernails, pick your nose or ass...dig at your crotch if you so wish

as far as ive seen babies suck their thumbs for comfort. looking at why older kids continue to suck their thumbs would be of more value than just telling them only babies suck their thumbs. do they continually suck their thumb? do they do it only in the privacy of their own home? do they do it in stressful times? do they do it when theyre bored? looking at why someone does something is often key in getting them to desist.
