Best Support Act you have UNINTENTIONALLY seen.

Which act did you know nothing about going into the show and come out as a huge fan?

For it would be The Sadies opening for Black Mountain. Never heard of them, but once they took the stage their skills were jaw dropping. Very fun to watch and easy to see why they are considered legends in Canadia.

    My top 3:

The Dirtbombs opening for The Datsuns in philly at the TLA about 5 or so years ago. They are one of the best live bands out there now i believe.

Bad Wizard was pretty cool too. Saw them also open up for The Datsuns in '04. They were/are (?) a fun rock band. Although haven't seen or heard anything from them in a few years I picked up their first albums which were good.

Kings Of Leon. I saw the open for The Strokes at the Tower Theater in '03. My friend that I went with told me about them and played a few songs from youth. I thought they were good, but they didn't blow me away or anything. Our seats weren't that great and I couldn't really see anything (we were towards the back). Few months later they played the TLA (headlined) and then i was hooked.

Dana Fuchs at Ottawa Bluesfest. Went in for Derek Trucks (who was godly), but Dana was very very good as well. Met her afterwards, nice lady!

  • I saw The Kills open for The Black Keys at what was essentially a middle school gymnasium in Toledo a few years back. Hadn't heard anything about them before hand and was blown away by there show. There couldn't have been many more than a 100 or so people at the show at that point. Cool experience. Even better, Alison Mosshart was hanging out with the crowd before the black keys went on stage.

Nothing comes to mind over the last decade more than My Brightest Diamond, which, I've talked about many times in the Other Music forum.

They opened for the Decemebrists here in San Francisco in 2007.

Ethereal, haunting, beautiful ... and yeah ... they can rock.

Shara Worden has become one of my favorite vocalists in music today, she was a guest vocalist on the last Decemberists album as well.

This video was taken from the very same show I was at. People say "literally" a lot ... but by the end of this song, my mouth was literally agape.

Check it out *until the end*, and tell me this doesn't move you ...

a few years ago i saw a band calle Viet Nam from philly and new york open for the lemonheads. their music was soaked with reverb and their music was slow and the lyrics were amazing. thier performance was hauntingly good. i bought the cd from the merch desk that night and i still think that that album is one of my favorites. these guys all had these massive beards and looked like they walked in from the local homeless shelter. they were all tweaked on something, not sure what. but i saw them again one other time maybe 6 months later headlining at a club with a capacity of like 100 people. shortly after that 2nd show the bassist and drummer either quit or were sacked and the lead guitarist went to rehab and the band disintegrated...i hear the lead player is in some new band but i doubt that they will ever recreate the magic that Viet Nam had...sad end for a great band...

    Interesting.

For me, it would be As Tall As Lions, who opened for the Cold War Kids when I saw them.

I love that album. I was going to see them when they toured with Wolf Parade but decided not to go since I spent a whole bunch of money on concerts earlier that year.

I figured they're a brand new band so they'll be touring non-stop and that I would have had the chance to see them next time around.

For me it's probably seeing Radiohead supporting James on December 13th 1993 in Newport, South Wales. I wasn't a fan of Pablo Honey at the time (actually, I'm still not) but their live show was pretty good even back then.

I saw both Jack Johnson and Coldplay open for 311 in San Diego back in 2002 (i think). I had not heard of either artist and I was blown away . . . especially by Coldplay (i still think they could have followed Radiohead's footsteps if they didn't go the pop route with their music). Also, 311 sucked :D

I was also mesmerized by Liam Finn when he opened for Ed.

It's a tie between the following:

Down opening up for Metallica in 2009 (I think). Down is just a fantastic metal band, and seeing Phil Anselmo live was pretty awesome. He's an intense frontman.

    or

The Mars Volta opening for A Perfect Circle in 2004. TMV kicked some major ass that night...something I'll never forget.

Then saw Liam Finn and loved his opener - The Veils.
The Tallest Man on Earth opening for John Vanderslice.
  • The only one that jumps out (probably because it was recent) is Alberta Cross opening for Ben Harper & Relentless 7 earlier this year. Bought their album at the show for $5 and it's very good start to finish.

The Doves, at the London Arena in 2002. Opening for, hum, Travis.

I had actually seen them in a pub in London a few weeks before, so it was no totally unintentional.

They were pretty good, although the crowd paid no attention whatsoever, what even got the band to say that their 80 year-old granny was more alive that they were. :D Shame.

Probably one of the few, if not the only, opening acts I can still recall...

Liam Finn for me too. Didn't know anything about him going in, and his performance blew me away.

I'd put Liam in 2nd though. Best supporting act I've seen that I didn't know much about was Los Lobos opening for the Grateful Dead in 1988 (David Lindley & El-Rayo X were also on the bill). All I knew about Los Lobos was their first song "Will The Wolf Survive", and was surprised with just how good of a live band they are. Been going to Los Lobos shows ever since.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
