Sorry if this has been discussed- didnt find a clear discussion on it.

Whats the verdict? Nook phyiscally looks nicer- but any real difference or advantage?

if money is no object, yes... but even the cheapest ipad costing more than twice a nook or a kindle, kinda takes it out of the equation if you are looking for an e-reader.

that's a little like someone asking honda civic vs toyota corolla and telling them a bmw 328i is better... no shit...

  • Kindle. Hands down.

Anyone blabbering about an iPad obviously doesn't read that much on it. It kills your eyes after long periods of time and the glare is absurd.

If you actually want a dedicated device to READ on, go with the Kindle.
  • merkinballmerkinball Posts: 2,262
Sure, my ipad isn't a dedicated e-reader, but I've read quite a few books on it (5 or so) using both the ibooks app and the kindle app since August when I picked it up, and haven't noticed any issues with reading on it for hours at a time. It's usually inside, that may make a difference as far as the glare goes.

One nice touch was the ability to research on the web while reading. One of the books I re-read was Neil Gaiman's American Gods, and there is a bunch of references to different Mythologies in it. Using the ipad allowed me to highlight a certain god/mythology and then to search google/wikipedia on the subject.

The benefit of having the convenience of the netbook aspect + netflix also means it gets a lot more use in my house, between my kids and I.

    What's the verdict?

I'm probably going to get my wife one of these for Christmas and I keep going back and forth between them. I was convinced I'd get a Kindle then I went to BN and was convinced to get a Nook. I'm still leaning towards the Nook, but a guy at work today told me he loves his Kindle and gave me a laundry list of reasons to get it, a lot of which had to do with wireless stuff that doesn't matter to me because I'm going to get the low end version of whichever one I get.

One thing making me think Kindle is that it looks like you can get a ton of classic books for free on Kindle. I'm still not sure. Help a brother out!

I should! I like books and actually am a little torn about buying it for her. I know she will love it though. I might buy her a couple of hardbacks to balance out!

so is she into books, technology or books and technology.. .

... cause im thinking some people would think this would be the perfect gift for me cause i read an awful lot, but then im adverse to technology.. yet still some people would think my love of reading would outweigh this. theyd be wrong of course, but not before they spent a shitload of money. but then again my people know me well enough(i hope) that theyd feel me out first. im not shy with my opinions. 8-)

She's into books, not technology. She has a friend who has a kindle and she told me she'd like to have one.

  • After looking for a while, I bought my wife the Kindle for Christmas...

I've played around with it a bit to get some books on it and to get the wifi set up so it is ready to rock and roll when she gets it.

The only thing I'm not a huge fan of in the user interface. The nook has the color book covers you can scroll through, and the Kindle is just basically a list, sortable by title, author, newest, etc... You can sort them into different "collections" I think, but it would be nice to have authors maybe sorted in like a windows style folders or even the b&w covers on the screen.

But the text is so clear, and it seems very easy on the eyes to read and I guess that is the most important thing. I like the size of it and the battery life is outstanding.
