WATERBURY, Vt. —

The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says two Connecticut men are facing charges they used bait to hunt bear.

State game wardens say they located a large bait pile of apples and acorns in Jay that was coated with an attractant.

Forty-nine-year-old David Such of Enfield and 49-year-old Charles LaFountain of Somers were arrested on Sunday in the town of Jay, near the Canadian border, after wardens began watching the bait pile.

Wardens say Such was arrested when he climbed into a tree stand over the bait pile. LaFountain was arrested nearby.

A number of other bait piles were found near a camp the two men were using

If convicted, they could get 60 days in jail and lose their right to hunt in Vermont for three years.

So, its ok to hunt them...just not set up bait? Or was it hiding in the tree that was wrong?
Either way, dont go to VT or CT to hunt your bears

Hunting bears with bait takes no skill whatsoever. It's like using dogs to tree lions and then shooting them from 15 feet away. I'm with Chadwick, they can all be lined up and shot as far as I am concerned. And no, that's not a joke.

Mookie was a Basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks and Jeff's favorite player i think.

For a short while in 1991 i think, before they were Pearl Jam, they were called Mookie B.

I got an email from an activist group that people were hunting bears for their bile, and sending it back to Korea for medicine.

We had a problem a few years ago out on the west coast with people hunting our bears and just taking their paws and selling it to the Chinese people for their remedies too.

Bear hunting should be illegal in general.
Yeah, you're all real big fucking men for setting up a trap and shooting the poor thing from a tree.
Real men would go out there and try and take it down with their bare hands. Then see how well you do, big man.

Well, most people don't volunteer to be lined up and shot. It usually takes a little more work than that. Otherwise, I find nothing hypocritical in my beliefs. I only want to shoot assholes.

It really drives me nuts, one animal 'attacks' a human and suddenly that opens the door for humans to slay as many of the animals as they want.

Sweet Pea is your girl. She's a Treeing Walker Coonhound, bred specifically to tree prey. And I can attest that she can run up to 7 miles without a break.

Of course, it's quite likely she's not very good at that, since I found her running down I-95 in North Carolina, with no prey in site unless she was trying to tree an 18-wheeler.

  • i really don't care one way or the other when it comes to bear hunting. i just thought the fact that people are so upset about it that they would like to see human beings shot and tortured over it is a bit extreme. Also most of what is being said makes no sense.
Why would i person try to kill a bear with his bear hands? and that they would line up for free hamburgers?
 these are some fun stereotypes aren't they.

i do agree that feeding a person or animal before killing them is probably the right thing to do, if you absolutely find it neccesary to kill them. it would be rude not too.
I also believe i would rather be surprised by my murder - opposed to having to plan for it.

i will go play some basketball now.

I have a friend who lives on a remote island near Ketchikan, Alaska and almost everyone hunts for their food as the prices are inflated at the local market. It's not too hard to get a bear permit and I asked him if he had considered it. His response was that if there was no other source of food, he would kill a bear for food . . . for his dog. Apparently bear meat doesn't taste very good.

i don't believe there is a situation in which i would kill another person. There are only a couple in which i would even wish to or consider killing another person.
I understand that this is just a forum and it is easy to make completely exagerrated statements such as the earlier ones made here, which is why i shouldnt have responded to it. I just was curious if you were being serious or making a joke of the extreme view you truly seem to have.
