Fuck drunk drivers!!!

My daughter is suffering right now, completely devestated, because her best friend's dad was just killed by a drunk driver. A truly good man who we've known for years lost his life, because some asshole was too stupid to make the right choice. Damn I wish they would absolutely drop the hammer on these fuckers who get pulled over for DUI's. At the very least let them serve a few years in jail and go for another 5 without a license. What a complete waste. Now a 13 year old girl is fatherless, and a stay-at-home mom is a widow.

i agree. it seems killing someone whilst drunk driving isnt as bad as killing them. tis as if the mindset is well they wouldnt have killed the person if theyd not been drink driving so...

To top it off, the guy was an illegal and had no license, so I doubt they will do much to him other than send him back over the border.

That's horrible. So sorry for you and your daughter's loss.

I feel anyone that blows over the limit should automatically have their license suspended for 5 years, and after those 5 years make them go through the process again (learners permit, drivers ed, etc..).

  • How sad....my prayers to the friends and family of the victim.

Drunk driving offenses should be much more strict. Too many people still view it as an "accident" when somebody is injured or killed do to alcohol related crashes, thus a more forgiving punishment. In reality it is a "choice" to put innocent people at risk of injury or death. There should be ZERO tolerance for driving while intoxicated.

can i just say please don't get so caught up in the fact that the person responsible was an illegal and had no licence, because one person is killed every 39 minutes in the US by a drunk driver. something like 18,000 people a year.

overall that's terrible statistics. wicked waste of lives.

Yeah. Ok I'll agree drunks are bad.

I'm not going to turn this political. So I better stay out because it's f-ing bs these mfers are allowed to stay here.

I hope the family gets through this. Pm me the memorial schooling fund so I can send a check.

i'm not an illegal alien sympathizer.
i'm just making the point that people should not lose sight of the fact that thousands of people are killed by drunk drivers every year and it's not just illegal aliens doing the killings.

i hope you never lose a member of your family that way but if you do you might realize that you don't give a shit what the nationality of the killer is. you just know someone you love isn't coming back and that stricter deterrents should be put in place.

i lost a close fraternity brother on new year's eve 1997 to a drunk driver. i guess it did not help that Matt had only had one beer and was not wearing a seat belt. but i still remember the last thing he said to me when i last saw him..."I'll call ya in a couple of weeks when i get back to St. Louis."

    he never made it back.

next time i saw him was at his funeral.

  • apologies if my comments offended. all i was trying to do was to point out not to lose sight of the fact that thousands and thousands of people are killed by drunk drivers each year and i hope the outrage is directed at all drivers who are responsible. not just illegals. don''t give yourself the false sense of security that it's just illegals doing the killing because it's not.

that's all i was trying to say. i meant no disrespect.

i'm sorry for your loss shawshank.

I am very sorry for your daughter's friends loss
and the trauma to all those involved including your family.
It is heartbreaking how life is gone and everything changes for those so young.

There are a lot of careless drivers out there drunk or otherwise.
They don't respect the damage that can be done.
They are distracted, they speed and are impatient and thoughtless.

I live on rural roads and go out to do short errands, middle of the day.
So often, weekly at the least, someone crosses over the yellow line, oncoming at me.
They realize it and correct but for those split seconds....

I have been wondering, due to the economy and unemployment rise,
if more people are drinking mid day to ease their sorrows.
If they only knew the sorrow they will cause when a tragedy happens,
the guilt they will carry for eternity.

This also something people don't think about in day to day driving,
this being the respect we should have when we are driving.
Drive for others with responsibility and kindness, as though a life depends on it,
    cause it does.

No offense taken Triumph, I understand totally what you are saying. It would be equally devastating no matter what citizenship the person held. I think I just feel anger, more so than I ever have before, because they are already saying they may be limited to just deporting this guy. That's just not right. I realize that nothing they do will bring our friend back, or give this girl back her father, but to essentially have no consequences. It makes no sense. Don't get me wrong, I don't have hatred for this person, infact the hardest thing I've had to do is explain to my kids why we should pray for the person that caused this, just like we do for the family that is suffering. Still though, we all make decisions, and we all should have to be held to the consequences of those decisions.

I just can't fathom the loss. My daughter has cried herself to sleep every night since it happened, so I can't imagine what her friend is going through. It just hurts even more to see your kids hurting so bad and knowing there's really nothing you can do. If there's good that can come out of this, it's just that the already close bond I shared with my kids just grew even stronger. My wife and I are already planning to step up and do whatever we can to at least fill whatever small part of that massive void that we can. As far as I'm concerned the girl is a part of our family now, and we will treat her as such, and her mom will get as much support and care as we can possibly give. That's really all we can do.

You know what frightens me even more the drunk drivers these days, all the people texting. I don't worry about drunk drivers on my bike ride at 7:00 in the morning, but I see a ton of highschool kids, and adults as well, driving by with their eyes focused on their hand instead of the road.

How many accidents have already been caused by this and not proven because all the person has to do is put the ol' hand held down after the fact and nobody knows the real reason the accident happened. We've had several kids hit by other kids on the way to and from school in the last couple of years, but for the most part, the reasons have increasingly been, "Oh, it was too dark, or, the sun was in my eyes."

How many people are getting away with murder because of deliberate inattentive driving?

Most kids I know have the person sitting shotgun being the 'designated texter'... But yeah, its definitely a problem.

This is awful, I'm so sorry for your daughter's friend's family. I've always thought DUI punishments were way too lenient, and this outcome is just so tragic. A big hug for you Shawshank!! You sound like you could use one. :)

The controversy has started already, some saying it is more dangerous as texters put the phone out of sight now, trying to conceal, text and drive at the same time.
I would imagine a cop will watch someone who they suspect and stop and check the phone. The seatbelt law is enforced in and around my home with police often randomly stopping and checking drivers, perhaps they will do that too.
The fine for texting is 150$ I think. Seatbelt fine is quite low and includes passenger in the front seat.

One of the biggest offenders of DUI's are cops. I had a softball friend who is a DC cop and when his buddies would join us after games they would drink to no end. I would tell them I'm at my two beer limit how about you guys, they would say, "we don't worry about that shit we take of each other". I was like are you kidding me these guys would routinely drink 8-10 beers after games and i know they pull people over for far less.

Sorry for your loss it's very tragic indeed. i tell my step kids to wear their seatbelts when in a car backseat or not cause they are people out there driving drunk all the time. One never knows when your number is being called.

i actually saw a cop texting while driving the other day. All i could do was shake my head.
  • this was a major issue in my area. The cops bungled the investigation (purposely or not, who knows). It's disgusting. The judge even said he was getting away with murder.

When I read about tragedies like this, it makes me wonder how people can even fathom getting behind the wheel after they have been drinking. Sadly, many people make the decision based on the their risk of getting caught/blowing above the legal limit. I wish people would base their decisions on the fact that they may seriously injure, or even kill, an innocent person.

If people can't make good decisions on their own, the legal system needs to harshen the punishment given to first-time and re-offenders.

Well, I got an update today, and I don't think this is going to be a free ride for this person after all. They have him charged with intoxication manslaughter. He's also being held for the immigration violation. For a while there they were making it sound like they were going to give him a ride to the border and send him on his way, but it's not looking like that now. Tomorrows the visitation and Thursday is the funeral. I think it's going to really hit home then. Thanks for all the kind words and support from everyone here.
