Artists of the Decade

This past decade, that is. Who do you rate as your favorite, not including the most obvious? To be real, I'm not sure I'd rate them on their material since 2000 as one of my favorite. The blasphemy! My top five are:

1. Wilco - Didn't get into them until I first heard Summerteeth but fell in love soon after.
2. White Stripes - Damn shame we might have heard the last from them. I love his side projects too but the White Stripes are my favorite.
3. Ryan Adams - There are many days when all I want to listen to is Ryan Adams. He's so versatile and talented and every album has it's own awesome character.
4. My Morning Jacket - They only had a few albums but damn they were good. I love how they're so unafraid of taking risks and still making great music.
5. Ray Lamontagne - I know he's too mellow for most of you, but as I've gotten older I've appreciated subtlety a lot more. And he is the master. Great lyrics, better voice, and great arrangements.

    To the OP:

We'll get another White Stripes album. I saw somewhere online they have recorded stuff, maybe an album next year they said. (I think I saw it on Rolling Stone.) Whenever we get that White Stripes album, I know it's going to be a great album.

But my choices for artists of the decade:

Bruce Springsteen (The Rising is one of my all-time favorite albums)
    U2
    White Stripes
Bob Dylan (His albums were great)
    Pearl Jam
    Jay Z

Wait, forgot to put Radiohead. Loved their albums this decade. And I forgot The Strokes.

Arcade Fire by a wide margin.

    Then:
    The Shins
    Incubus
    Modest Mouse
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
  • Jack White (just everything)
    BRMC
    QOTSA
    NIN
    Sleater-Kinney
Common sense is not so common.

It was a pretty shitty decade artistically but I agree with this. I still hate the White Stripes but I give them credit.

  • radiohead, end of discussion. arcade fire is defintely number 2 of the list, but number 1 is radiohead, hands down. no other band influenced, culture, politics, art, technology, music etc... from 2000-2009 more than radiohead.

I should probably check out Arcade Fire sometime by the sound of it . . .

    For my nominations, I choose:

    PJ
    Radiohead
    Mark Lanegan
    NIN
    Josh Homme

    Party On, Dudes!

But I rarely reach for their records. No doubt they were incredible, but I don't enjoy them too much. Therefore, they're not on my list.

Um, no. I love Radiohead, but I think you're overstating their importance in the 2000s.

I wouldn't give it to anybody to symbolize how much music has really opened up during the last 10 years.

    in no real order

    my morning jacket
    wilco
    arcade fire
    neko case
    radiohead

honorable mention to pearl jam for their continued greatness as a touring act, although aside from riot act, their studio output has been mediocre at best, in my opinion.

I love Radiohead too but Kid A and Amnesiac as a whole just didn't do a whole lot for me. But Hail to the Theif and In Rainbows were as good back to back albums as any two in that time period, IMO.
  • I wanna say just Jack White, too. I love me some White Stripes, but that second Raconteurs album is my favorite of the last decade.

I can definitely get behind this. They're a great group of musicians and have consistently put out fantastic rock music for well over 10 years now. People that know them know how great they are, people that don't are missing the hell out.

I was thinking that although I appreciated his work, I never really started digging into Springsteen's work until I heard his two most recent albums. He is definitely the exception to the rule for 70's and 80's rock bands trying to still make relevant music. Not only were they relevant, they were some of the best of the year that they came out, IMO.

Can I ask why people think Josh Homme is so great? Dave Grohl has done more and got TCV together...

Honestly....I can't think of any other band that I've consistently enjoyed all of their albums in the past ten years.......even though their self-titled came out in 1999.

Sadly there is only one rock album that I actually LOVE from the past decade, and thats KoL Because of the Times.

Other favorite artist from the past decade has been Opeth.

All of the above is excluding PJ of course.
