Retire RITFW

  • I'd like to see Pearl Jam change their whole layout of their performance.

    :)

I like this idea. They always change their setlist, which is great but the pattern of the show is always about the same. Open with a slow one (for the most part), get into some harder songs, play an extended daughter, close the first set with DTE, RVM, etc., close the show w/ RITFW, Baba and YL.

I'd like to seem them switch it up a bit. Open with some more diverse songs, move some songs around, and I'm also in favor of dropping RITFW as a closer. I like it, but it is getting old in that spot. I like when they close with their own songs.

I can't complain too much, b/c most bands of their stature just go play the same set every night, but I wouldn't mind a change to the overall pattern.
"Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?"
  • Do some of you even look at the bands recent set lists?

This would have been a good post for the end of the 07 tour. But they have really changed it up for this past 08 tour.

Every tour there are significant changes, songs brought back, songs put back on the shelf..

I heard RITFW quite a bunch. When i walked out of Lolla 07 after RITFW, I actually remember saying "I really hope they take a break with that song. Along with Worldwide Suicide".

I didn't hear Worldwide Suicide again until MSG2 (the first time they played it since Lolla, 10 shows after Lolla) and I didn't hear Rockin In The Free World till Mansfield 2, which was only the 2nd and last time they played it in the 08 tour.

Certain tours have certain things that the band likes to stick with. For example, in 06 it was basically a guarantee that the first 5 songs would contain Life Wasted, Worldwide Suicide & Severed Hand, and the first encore would start with Wasted Reprise into Man Of The Hour. Man of the Hour wasn't played once in 08 (by the band).

Every tour things change. If you would have told me in May 06 that in July at the Gorge I will hear Dirty Frank, Satans Bed, Rats, Leash and Little Wing.. I would have told you that you're out of your mind.

Just like if this past May you would have told me Who You Are, All Night, WMA, Hard To Imagine, Down & Watchtower will be played more than Worldwide Suicide and Rockin In The Free World in 08, I would have thought you were on drugs.

I personally dont think they would have played RITFW at all this year if not for the guests that were onstage for the only 2 performances.

Sorry for the long ranting post, but I just felt the need to show the people asking the band to change it up, that they already have changed it up.

Cant wait to see what comes in 09.

  • I hope they NEVER retire Rockin'....

Listening to the 2003 bootlegs, it sounds a bit tired and lackluster, but since 2005 there seems to be a fire lit under the boys when they bust it out because it sounds phenomenal!

I think I've heard it 8 or 9 times out of the 10 shows I've been to and it's been one of the highest points of the show, energy wise. The whole crowd felt like one big party, it was immense. Lisbon II and Paris 206 in particular were stellar. The buildings were shaking.

I've seen 25 shows and I still like RITFW. I've heard them end with that, Ledbetter, Fuckin' Up, Indifference, Baba, and a couple others. I think I saw a show where they ended with Alive. They can play whatever they like, and I'll listen. Its not only the exact song but its being in the same space as Pearl Jam and taking in their playing.

    I don't expect a tour in '09 either, sorry, but I don't.

i have to agree with the OP, RITFW and Baba get old

and I'm the biggest Who fan in the world

but i've seen the Who do it 18 times and PJ at least 25

so I could do without it :D

I hope they don't retire any of those songs completely... maybe just lay off them some.

If I were to nit-pick I'd also ask them to lay off covers all together... maybe do one per show or something. It seems lately that the majority of the 2nd encore is usually covers while some perfecty fine originals get forgotten about.

In short, I don't care what they play as long as they mix it up some and try to stick to originals

I hear ya. don't lose it forever, just lay off a bit

Yeah, I wish they would mix up the closing songs a bit more at times. Although, that said, hearing YL at the end of a particularly great show is like having a cigarette after great sex...

I think RitFW is the song I've seen to close the most shows, but I would never retire it. They used it quite well this tour like at the end, it kinda felt like that was the message of the tour. I have seen Indifference, YLB, Baba, RitFW and Alive as all closers and YLB and RitFW make sense to me as closers. I hate Alive as a closer, it doesn't feel like the shows over. Its happened twice for me and each time I have been like OK whats next only for the houselights to come up. But when you see Mike grab his Fender for YLB you know its the last song and you know half the floor is leaving.

As for openers, I would like to see Of the Girl and Oceans, those two are the only openers I haven't seen. I think.

They should bring back Deep, No Way, Ghost, Get Right and finally do Brother again for whenever they tour next. Also they should play All or None a lot more. I have seen it twice but its one of the best songs if not the best on Riot Act. Dirty Frank, Breath and Crown of Thorns would be nice too.
    32 shows and counting...
  • I know this song is as much theres as it is Uncle Niel's

    Ummm, no it's not.

  • I'm sorry but every PJ show I have seen has ALWAYS ended with Rocking in the Free World. I know this song is as much theres as it is Uncle Niel's but I would like to see a different show closer than this.... or Baba O'Riely or Yellow Ledbetter.

So my question to all you fine people out there is... In '09 what song would you most like to hear these fine 5 men end a show with?

I agree with the fact that RITFW may be a little too "comfortable" of a closer for the band at this point, but retiring it?

I say just play it A LOT less often and close the show with 'All Those Yesterdays'!

I've been to quite a few shows in my day and have heard 3 closers.
    YL
    RITFW
    RVM

I don't think they have to "retire" YL or RITFW, but just stop playing them so f'n often!!!
  • i am all for the retirement of indifference as a CLOSER
i love the song but i want to finish the night rocking, not on a slow number

i felt that way when i heard it for the first time and as a closer at East Rutherford I 06 but after hearing the boot i like it more and more
i just wish they'd turn the bass up so you know its indifference b4 ed says "I'll like a match this morning..."

Honestly, with being a big fan of The Who, I would really like to see them play 'The Real Me' a little bit more, but I'm not sure how good of a 'closing' song that would be.

    YESSSS!!!
This has always been one of my favorite WHO songs, but when I saw Pearl Jam cover it recently it was mind blowing ... I agree this would be a great add to any show at any time, including a closer.
I was alone and far away when I heard the band start playing!

...I was always a DeadHead, but when I first heard Winston Rodney, aka the Burning Spear, sing, I became a SpearHead too!
  • Sonic Reducer has always been my favorite PJ cover. Would love to hear it close a show. Oh, and it's not 5 men, it's 6...ya can't forget BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM.

speaking of boom...I wish he would stay the fuck away from his keyboard during RITFW

  • I know this will never happen because they like saving this song but I have always thought that Crown of Thorns would be so great as a closing song, I don't know why but to me it just seems like a great idea

I have a bad habit of not wishing things away. I know that some day, they will be gone... and when that day comes... I know I will miss them.
So, instead... I just enjoy what is here... for now.
