Your favourite local band(s)?

I've always been a fan of Winnipeg's local music scene. Especially in the 90's, we produced some of Canada's best bands. I want to know of some of your fave local acts, acts that maybe anyone outside of your home burg has never heard of, which you find is a travesty! Provide a brief synopsis of the band and/or a link to their music if you please. Feel free to plug your own band if you want!

My picks are:

The New Meanies (formerly known as the Blue Meanies, but had to change their name due to a conflict with another band). Very blues-driven rock. Very popular in and around 1995-ish. As the Blue Meanies they released two independent albums: Experience is Lost (cassette only!) and The Blue Meanies. After the name change and major label contract, they released Three Seeds, Letting Time Pass being their big hit. Then they left the label, and released one more album, called Highways. No hits off that one, given the absence of any label push. They were going to release an EP, called Spin Around. Never happened, but 3 songs off it were put on their website for free download. They now only play out sporadically, since the frontman is now the drummer of Nathan.

The Watchmen: awesome band from the same era. They have released 5 albums, with their second album being their peak. It's called In The Trees, and pay special attention to Lusitana, All Uncovered, and Middle East.

Domenica: this is an up-and-coming band, with Bekki Friesen as the frontwoman. They are more metal than alternative, but that's not a bad thing. You have to check them out. Live they kick-ass. First album The Luxury is awesome.

Of course, as mentioned, having your leader look like this doesn't hurt:

I have to throw a mention in for my favourite band from Ottawa, Amos The Transparent. They sound like Wilco mixed in with Canada's indie scene. Their records don't do them justice, as they excel live. I check them out any chance I get, always a good night. On top of that, all are super nice guys!

I happen to think that several of the best bands from my quarter of the UK are made up of girls. Check out their tunes...

    Beverley Kills - all-girl punk: http://www.myspace.com/beverleykills

Violet Violet - although they recently split up :( they have an awesome catalogue!- http://www.myspace.com/violetviolet1

    Tiny Tigers - http://www.myspace.com/tinytigers

And I do love these guys, even if they are too disorganised to ever update their MySpace ;) :

  • well when I said "local bands", it was sort of implied that they were either indie bands/unknowns, at least to people here. I don't think of big bands (Ramones, BB, SY, Interpol) from NY to be a "local" band, you know? that was all. I should have been more specific....

  • well I didn't want to say that, as two of the 3 I mentioned are not indie bands, but major label in Canada doesn't mean shit anywhere else except maybe Australia! ;)

exit 380 fr0m Dallas/ Ft worth has always been a favorite of mine.

if you like pearl jam you might like these guys, but each album is a little different. They never like to do the same formula twice.

I've never heard the drones... But Wikipedia describes them: "The Birthday Party kicking the shit out of Neil Young in Hendrix' garage."

Sounds pretty wicked to me. Where would y'all suggest I start?
