When checking into a hotel/motel leave your luggage in your car or the bathroom and do a check of the bed and surrounding areas (night table, head board and crevices of mattress). The wife and I have been doing this for 4 years when traveling, so far so good. I have read that you can now pick them up on public transit, airplanes, airports, movie theaters, so it seems like they will be hard to avoid.
You can check the website before checking in to motels/hotels called http://bedbugregistry.com/ to see if where your staying has been reported.
I am hoping its more media hype playing on peoples fear rather than reality.

Thanks for that hotel link. I'm staying in a hotel in WV in November and their name isn't showing up but it does not mean they are clean. Does sleeping with the lights on help?

No problem, wife and I try to stay vigilant, do not want to bring these suckers home. another thing I was told was if you find them in your room either was your shoes or toss them, I guess their eggs stick real easy and they lay them anywhere.
The lights on do not help, from what I understand they sense from carbon dioxide and your body heat when your in your deepest sleep, and can live quite a while without feeding. Everything I have read makes it sound like they are the biggest pain in the ass bugs you could end up with, and very expensive to get rid of.

I can tell you that now when I travel I do the following in the hotel: check the box springs of the beds - you can see if there's little dots around the seams which could signify possible bedbugs, and 2) I bought these huge zip lock bags that my little rolling suitcase will fit inside. I put the suitcase on a coffee table in the hotel, get out the few things I need, then put the suitcase inside the ziplock bag. After I sleep, I put my pajamas inside a smaller ziplock back inside the suitcase, and keep them in there until I get home to run the laundry. And travel light. Its one thing to get bitten at a hotel (which has never happened to me), but the main thing is you don't want to bring any home with you!
