This is my favorite song from R.E.M. , i think it's off Automatic.

I will try not to breathe
I can hold my head still with my hands at my knees
These eyes are the eyes of the old, shivering and bold

I will try not to breathe
This decision is mine. I have lived a full life
And these are the eyes that I want you to remember, oh

I need something to fly over my grave again
    I need something to breathe

I will try not to burden you
I can hold these inside. I will hold my breath
    Until all these shivers subside,
    Just look in my eyes

I will try not to worry you
I have seen things that you will never see
Leave it to memory me. I shudder to breathe

I want you to remember, oh (you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)
    Baby, don't shiver now
Why do you shiver now? (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again. (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to breathe, oh, oh, oh, oh
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Oh, oh, oh, oh
    Oh, oh, oh

I will try not to worry you
I have seen things that you will never see
Leave it to memory me. Don't dare me to breathe
I want you to remember, oh (you will never see)
I need something to fly (something to fly)
Over my grave again (you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe)
    Baby, don't shiver now
Why do you shiver? (I will see things you will never see)
I need something to breathe (something to breathe - I have seen things you will
    never see)
    I want you to remember

I often forget how much I enjoy this band. I don't listen to them incessantly or anything, but I own almost all of their albums, and have seen them live twice (1999 and 2008 - the first show quite a bit better than the latter, but that had a lot to do with expectations, as the latter was at Madison Square Garden, and just didn't quite measure up to the epic performances I've seen in that building).

In any event, like many here my favorite is New Adventures in HiFi, and while I would not put it on the same pedestal as No Code, I get the comparison completely. My other favorites are Green, Up (surprisingly), and Document. As far as Automatic For the People is concerned - great album, though I don't put it at the top as there are many beautiful songs there, but it all melds into a one note sorta feel as a whole album - which can get kind of depressing and boring half way through.

Cute little story for you all. Myself, the wife, and two boys were on a family outing of some kind or another a few weeks ago and I was playing R.E.M. when So. Central Rain came on. My four year old was quietly listening and I didn't think much of it. Later on he asks me to play "that song" again. I asked which one, and he said the "I'm sorry" song. :) I think he appreciates Michael Stipe saying I'm sorry fifty times in the song because he has to say it so much to his little brother. :D He asks for it all of the time now. Kids are awesome. That is all.

I enjoy them. Wasn't a huge fan at first. I liked Automatic, Green, Document, & Monster. Git into their older stuff later. Really enjoyed their last album. Saw them for the first tome a few years ago in philly and was very impressed at how great they were live. Of course Eddie coming out to sing helped a little

    COLLAPSE INTO NOW
The band's new record, slated for a spring 2011 release, will be titled COLLAPSE INTO NOW. BBC6Music first reported the title following a conversation with Bertis who was in Manchester earlier this week for In The City, a music business conference.

(Despite its wide reportage, Bertis did NOT tweet anything-- Bertis doesn't tweet...); see BBC's tweet.

This is a very nice piece of news! :) Hopefully will get a tour next year in Europe. Haven't seen them away from the UK yet so some nice venues in Germany, Italy or France would be cool. I found this clip today I'd never seen before and watching Nils Lofgren fly away with the solo it made me think Mike McCready would be an amazing guest for this song... :D

Out Of Time / Ten - Major radio/MTV rotation, massive global success & sales, rave reviews.
Automatic.../Vs - Huge anticipated release, same euphoria as previous and successful tours.
Monster/Vitalogy - Peak pre-release euphoria and similar less radio friendly albums/singles.
New Adventures/No Code - Strange single choices, both gave press a wider berth and albums developed good cult followings instead of massive sales, both albums separated true fans from trendy hangers on.

    Really good comparisons between albums/eras.

Man, it's hard to believe I've been listening to R.E.M. for close to 30 years!

R.E.M. have produced some of the finest music ever made. Automatic for the People was one of the few albums I purchased as a teenager with little money to spend. That said, I can't say I listen to them all that often, and the pre-Document albums really do nothing for me.

Now THAT is a great story. So jealous, RYE. No wonder Michael and Eddie get along so well.

Also, you guys all know that Stipe is Frances Bean's godfather, right? Needless to say, the man is super-respected by his peers. I always love hearing about the relationships between these rock stars we as fans put on pedestals. They are just regular assholes like you and me, as evidenced by RYE's story about Mr. Stipe.

And he was a total asshole. The drunker we got on shit champagne the more we talked shit about everyone and everything, including ourselves. It was actually hilarious. At one point he told me he really liked what a bitch I was and I showed him my tattoo, which is an old school anchor with a banner across it that says "bitch". He told me it was one of the coolest tattoos he has seen. My cool card shot up so high at that point.

awesome story, i would love to chat with Stipey.....he always comes as a very interesting and educated person......He strikes me many ways as a guy very similar to our Mr vedder....thoughtful and introspective, with a take on things that always has me hanging on every word....

to drink anything in a bar with him would be such a cool experience....
