In case anyone missed the most welcome announcement about the early 2011 release of the new duke spirit album:
"We’ve literally just finished our 3rd album. The last song was mixed yesterday. I think we’re planning to release something in the next month or so, and then the album early next year. We toured the last album for about 18 months, so when we finished we came home to London, took a bit of time off, and built our own studio. We took our time writing, and recorded the album in a few different sessions in London, Gloucestershire and Los Angeles."
5 Questions With: The Duke Spirit
September 26th, 2010
Here's some rather cool Duke Spirit related stuff I've come across:
Video: footage from the adidas Y-3 launch dress-rehearsal - filmed from the crowd, pointed at band & the catwalk, with the Duke Spirit playing live in the background (not sure if it really does them justice mind!)
Quite interesting to get a sense of 'how the other half live!' Not sure how common it is for adidas to use a live rockband on the catwalk!?! (Must be the future guys - get snappy!)
MP3:Also, pursuing this fashion / rock / music connection - here are 50 FREE MP3s of bands doing cover versions including the Duke Spirit courtesy of Dr Martens himself - although you have to register if you want 'em!!
Interesting times we are living in!!

9/04/11 - East Troy, WI - PJ20 - Night 2

Yes I saw that they were touring with Incubus. I know their studio work inside out - far more than their live output. It seems criminal to me that they are not more known about yet.... like I keep banging on about here, Neptune is probably in my top twenty albums of all time, (and I own a hell of a lot of records!!) - certainly one of my favourite albums of the decade! 'Electrifying' is a word I would use about the Duke Spirit.
I really must see them live in 2011 - can't wait to hear their new material. Seems a real buzz around the Duke spirit currently - justifiably!
Did you have a particular highlight from the set they performed?

Did you happen to grab the signed Vinyl from their site last year I think it was? I was able to get one, looks nice in a frame. For $15 I couldn't pass it up.
This is good news, can't wait to hear some new tracks and hopefully some stops my way again.

No I missed that - but I got me an unsigned copy of Neptune on vinyl - a great record to spin - it comes to life even more than usual - and I have a few 7"s - I also have the early Roll Spirit Roll (yellow) ep on vinyl, which I tracked down from some obscure website some weeks after hearing 'Red Weather' played by the legendary John Peel on BBC 6Music - 2003 / 2004??
I can distinctly remember this song cutting through the airwaves and shaking me out of a slumber - cos I'd just got home with my first DAB digital radio thing and was soaking up all this new music floating over the airwaves (most of it was quite forgettable!!) That version of Red Weather still gives me chills - I'm a big 'words' and lyrics man (as I guess many of us here are), and I remember being blown away by the dark sentiment - the shadowy spirit I guess. Is rare to find a female vocalist who can get all fragile, but be so tough too.
Anyway, I digress...... yes I have my Neptune in one of those frames on the wall too- might swap it for this though!!

Shame on you!!
I've been reading how the Duke Spirit have been working on the new album with producer Richard File, who is best known for his work with UNKLE and James Lavelle – good stuff, which tends to contain more 'beats' and 'loops' elements. I don't know if File is the new album's overall producer or not; but he has previously remixed 'The Step & the Walk', and the Duke Spirit contributed a track to the third UNKLE album 'War Stories' (2007) – Mayday. I liked this, but not quite as much as their most rocky stuff – although this is partly because it reminds me a bit too much of the song 'Baby I'm ready to go' by Republica! (not always a bad thing – but not what I necessarily want from my Spirit!!).
Are we to expect a more dance-influenced sound from the new Duke Spirit album? Apparently they didn't give much away at the Adidas Y-3 launch (here is my source by the way! > http://www.clashmusic.com/news/duke-spi ... -y-3-range ).
There certainly has been a lot of progression and development in the Duke Spirit sound since they started, and Neptune is brilliant for the way the guitars just shimmer across the vocals like a liquid hacksaw or something. Maybe Neptune is the culmination of that kind of sound – it works brilliantly for me because of the way Liela's voice rises above and cuts through the band. Anyways, sheer speculation – but possibly the Duke's 2011 album will see a departure.... time will tell!!

Not sure about that - no idea! But if you look at their twitter site you will see today came the words '...almost there...' !!
I'm hoping we will hear news of a new single release very shortly - or maybe even a few new songs from the album!
A lot has been happening in the past few weeks: the duke spirit website was updated with the tantalising words 'NEW SONGS COMING SOON' and today came the awesome confirmation that the new duke spirit album is finished, and will be released early 2011!!
Liela Moss and the Duke Spirit helped launch the latest Adidas Y-3 fashion range in New York in September, joining the esteemed roll-call of musical ambassadors and exponents of the deep adidas 'street', 'style' and ''music' connection.
Meanwhile; there has been much buzz and excitement over the internet airwaves about the dukes' next and latest moves, and growing curiosity about the new album. Many are positive that the Duke Spirit will prove the best band of 2011; their new album promises to set the year alight! A duke spirit tour would really cap things off now!! - headlining, or supporting another major band (like the Rolling Stones!!?!).
I have heard that the new album may be 'dirtier' and darker that the exemplary 'Neptune' (2008) - if this is possible. What I think is so great about the Duke Spirit (and Neptune in particular) is the way Liela Moss uses her voice ~ electrified by the incandescent guitar work – to evoke both joy and foreboding in qual measure..... Many of the always superb lyrics are able to induce both inspiration and trepidation!
The new album could be even greater than Neptune, and if it is – expect to seek out Leila Moss's intricate vocal nuances – at once husky and smouldering, childlike and awestruck, sassy yet innocent, sexy, pure and defiled in one breath – and always guaranteed to create an urgent sense of disquiet, of twisted hope, transcendence – which is obviously something that Eddie Vedder is also a past master of.
SO! over the coming weeks, months and year, us duke spirit fans should be listening out for a scintillating new album, a tour, and one of the best bands of the era – the Duke Spirit – setting 2011 alight!!
Great news....!!

It’s been a while since TDS have graced us with new music (Neptune – with stonking track “Lassoo” – came out in 2008) but I’ve been hearing whispers that the band have been working on new stuff this past year. So I tracked Luke Ford down in London to find out.
So, what the hell have you been up to in the last six months?
Luke Ford: Making a record between various parts of London (North and South) , Brighton, The Cotswolds, Los Angeles and Wales.
How IS the recording going? Or, what stage are you at?
We’ve completely finished.
What’s the new stuff sounding like?
Like a real Bethnal Green Bruiser of a record, with a pretty kind heart if you treat it right.
[BSR Note: Bethnal Green is a kinda gritty East London neighbourhood.]
If Wikipedia is to be believed, what could possibly be good about recording in “The West Country”?
Great cider, great cheese and great cheese rolling contests, what more could one ask for?
When are we gonna get to physically hold a new Duke Spirit “compact disc” in our hands? Because I’m itchy.
A mighty fine New Ep is on it’s way imminently – so keep ‘em peeled. You’ll be able to hear new songs on our website in and over the next few weeks.
What bands out there are currently turning you and the others on?
Joe Gideon & The Shark, Black Angels, She Keeps Bees, First Aid Kit, Grinderman, Archie Bronson Outfit, Black Keys…
You’ve been out on tour with a bazillion frankly-quite-awesome-bands. Highlights?
Simple – Dave Catching. He is the highlight.
[BSR Note: Dave Catching is the Eagles of Death Metal's guitarist and amazingly kind and wonderful dude.]
…although we did some shows with Duran Duran once in some skewed turn of events and I must say they still have some fine highlights on their barnets.
Best Englishman abroad story?
Lawrence Of Arabia
Tell me something secret about Eagles of Death Metal or Queens of the Stone Age? Josh Homme wants me, right?
Of course he does….In fact, all those guys do. There were many nights out on tour when I’d overhear any one of those boys mumbling your name under their breath in quite a disturbing manner.
Does Olly The Kid still look like this? I found a video of him on YouTube:
Yes, although I’d say his hair has grown a little since that was filmed.
Which is your favourite guitar and why? Feel free to geek out.
My 1964 Framus Strato Deluxe because it looks weird as fuck, It sounds cool as fuck, it seems to have a Foot stock rather than a headstock and my bandmates hate it because it seems to follow its own path when it comes to staying in tune. All great reasons to love an instrument.
Is Liela still ridiculously hot? And what products does she use to make herself that way? Because I want to buy some.
Damn right. A combination of Hai Karate, Woods Old Navy Rum and a little Sriracha sauce applied to both sets of cheeks morning and night will get you there, I believe. \m/
New music from The Duke Spirit will be sneaking its way onto their site http://www.thedukespirit.com shortly. Bookmark it. Then go see ‘em next time they’re in your hood. And say hello from me.
This song is immense!! a crackling sizzling whirlpool of a tune! heavy, catchy; great hooks great vocals - great sound! Bodes really well for the new album I think - the opening riffs, the production - like it A LOT!! I can't remember when I was last this excited before loading up a new release, and it doesn't let me down...... encore!! What a gem of a free download.
What I like most about this single is they seem to have brought the same power and energy they always bring to the fast rockers to a more smouldering song - and it's a heavier sound that seems to work really well. Très très bien!
I was going to hold off posting until I saw what others thought of it.... have dominated this thread a bit too much of late. Have listened a few times now though and couldn't restrain myself! Bravo Duke Spirit

There is an LA show coming up on October 30th 2010:
The Duke Spirit, Cut Chemist to Headline KCRW's Halloween Masquerade
KCRW's massively big Halloween party is back. The radio station today announced the lineup and details about the October 30th 21-and-over event, which covers five themed rooms inside downtown's Park Plaza.
Masquerade: A Halloween Costume Ball & Dance Party includes the vaudeville circus troupe Lucent Dossier, food trucks, 13 KCRW DJs and performances by Cut Chemist, The Duke Spirit and Gram Rabbit (KCRW is offering free downloads of their music).
Advance tickets are $75, but are $10 cheaper if bought in advance before noon Monday. Door price is $85.
LAist covered both the bands and the costumes at the event last year. Check the photos out here.

What do other people think of the new song? For me this is easily amongst the best stuff they have done...!
