what was Big Bold and Free?

  • To the people saying it's not as big deal that they said we were getting something.....if you got the weekly Target circular and it promised you a free CD with purchase, would you not be somewhat mad if you got to the register and they just ignored the free CD and wouldn't talk about it when you asked what happened?

not really...I wouldn't have felt entitled to it to begin with.

I would think "Hey, that's a nice gesture." and then once I found out it went cancelled or ignored I would think, "Oh, that's too bad." And that would be the end of it.

I've seen countless mentions of it on the board. I know it's a sore spot with 10c-ers, so I'm not trying to open old wounds, or start a bitching thread, but I'm wondering what's the back story behind this?

it was a bad peen joke that nobody got... time to move on ;)
  • I find that EXTREMELY hard to believe.

When a friend f**ks you over, and then they apologize and say "I'll make it up to you, I promise", and nothing is ever mentioned again, and then if you actually ask them about it, and instead of acknowledging their error, they get mad at you, you'd be ok with that, or would you tell that friend to go f*** themselves?

I'd personally do the latter, just because of the obvious disrespect.

Same goes with business practices. Especially when we hear time after time from certain mods about the "community" aspect of this place. Apparently it only goes one way.

That all being said, I'm talking big because I wasn't around at the time. ;)

It wasn't like the club screwed all the fans over. They just tried to do something extra special and it didn't come off. I don't know why they now want to ignore it, but I suspect it's because that's easier than dealing with all the entitlement. Oh sure, if they'd come out and said "Sorry, we were trying to do this but it didn't work out.", all the same people would be saying "Why couldn't they do it, why couldn't they aorganise an alternative."

It was YEARS ago. I can't believe people still bring it up.

  • I only brought it up because I wanted to know what it was all about. I knew it was a touchy subject for many, but I wanted to know. And now I do!

  • ten club never said that they planned to offer the big bold and free thing in lieu of the ticket fiasco, they only said it would soon follow.

friendships v. surface level business relations are completely different. That being said if my friend just bought a boat and offered to take me fishing that year, but never got around to planning the fishing trip...I wouldn't care as that's not all the friendship is based on.

I signed up to ten club expecting a discount on bootlegs (at the time), a chance to avoid ticketmaster during sales, and a holiday single. They've pulled through on those promises yearly and anything else offered is extra and nothing that I see as owed.

BBF was a direct result of miscues on their part. The servers in the good section, the lack of tickets for Borgata (and the $100 price), the late newsletters and records. Read the letter, they are clearly apologizing for things that they did wrong. From what I recall, there were A LOT of angry people around here during that period. They were in danger of losing customers so they stepped up and wrote that letter and promised us something. Again, they were in danger of losing customers. It was a very nice letter but something got in the way of providing us with what they were going to give us but most of the people around here forgot they were pissed off and it was never spoken of again. This would be a terrific opportunity for someone from the 10 Club to chime in and set the record straight.

And be nice....the guy was just wondering what it was when he brought it up. Don't try to make him sound like a jerk for being curious. His intentions were good.
  • re-reading the letter and no where am I interpreting,

Because of the mishap; we're doing BBF

in the last paragraph all I read is,

Be patient, something BBF is on its way

any meaning beyond that, I would say is solely the reader's implication.

If you were here while all of that was going on and so many people outraged, you would understand that the letter was a direct response to that. Are you arguing just for the sake of arguing?
  • I was here, people were outraged.

And the letter was definitely used to calm the fire, but still nothing was promised or owed because of that situation.

  • Funny... the Central Park comment brings back embarrassing memories. Sometime in early 1995 my brother called me from college to tell me he heard a rumor that Pearl Jam was playing a surprise show in Central Park. Who told him? "Oh, somebody who knows everything there is to know about PJ. If she said it, it's true."

I lived an hour away in New Jersey, and after my mom told me I couldn't go alone I stupidly convinced a friend of mine to come out with me to find it. It also happened to be his anniversary with his gf, who wasn't a fan at all. All three of us set out to find this secret Pearl Jam show.

We never found any show. We found nothing. We wandered around Central Park in total darkness, like complete fools, and I ruined my friend's anniversary. Thank the cloudmonster I was only 16 at the time, because as an adult I would've had a harder time bouncing back from that humiliating display of gullible stupidity.

Why are people "defending" the ten club about this still? I could give two shits about saying something was coming and then it not happen. Its the "I have no idea what you are talking about" attitude they had about the whole situation. "Oh yeah, you know that thing we said that was going to happen? Yeah? I have no idea what you are talking about" "Move along... by some merch... re up your membership"
Sorry no matter how you try to spin it they F'd up royally by pretending they never said anything in the first place.
