it would not take much for palin and boehner to speak out on this, just make a quick statement...if they refuse to condemn this "pastor" then their silence implies how they really feel about this subject....

  • and this tolerant christian is burning the quran why???

Check out the church's website. http://www.doveworld.org/ He gives 10 (then 5 more) "reasons" why. Interestingly, the majority of them are equally, or more, applicable to the Bible & Christianity.

So I guess he wouldn't object to us burning the Bible then...

    ...unless of course he's a hypocrite. :|

But surely not... He is a man of God after all.

Why are we giving this idiot any air time. he has a church of what 20 people. this is sadly the best thing that has ever happen to him and his church.
  • How many people follow this Pastor? And how many idiots have jumped on board because of the coverage? The weight afforded to these clowns has given the appearance that this is a wide-spread attitude in the US…I’d hope, and be willing to bet, that that isn’t the case. This story, and the WTC non-mosque in particular, seem to be completely overblown, and widening the gap between western culture and islam. Sickeningly; I think that’s intentional. From both a political standpoint, and a media sales/ratings standpoint. The media’s position as a tool for political posturing and fear mongering over religion in the West (the US in particular) is going to lead to catastrophe….as noted, our military personnel will likely feel it first. But let’s not forget that this suffering is being wrought by the West in many places already, facilitated by the same media cocktail of hatespeech and lullaby. Seems some people never learn.

I know it can be dangerous to ignore hate, lest it spread…
But am I the only person that feels like this issue, and the WTC non-mosque stories are media-fabricated, inconsequential bullshit that would simply fade away if we ignored them? I’ve been trying to ignore these threads for weeks but cant bite my tongue any more. These people are desperate for a platform from which to spew their venom, and by engaging them in debate, we’re telling the media that this kind of sensational garbage is worth reporting. We’re telling them it sells, and perpetuating the cycle.

Yes... just about every church in any decent sized town has more members than this nutjob... but thanks to our media "news" sensationalism, this guy has been elevated to a status that he'd never have without an idiotic stunt like this.

Even pastor’s old church condemns Quran-burning

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20 ... an-burning

It's increasingly looking as though the only spiritual or political figure who will not denounce Florida pastor Terry Jones' plan to commemorate Sept. 11 by burning copies of the Quran is Jones himself. Wednesday brings the news that even the church Jones founded in Germany in the 1980s is condemning the upcoming Quran-burning at his small place of worship in Gainesville, Fla.

"We are surprised and shocked at the extreme radicalism being displayed [by Jones] right now on this issue," Stephan Baar of the Christian Community of Cologne told the Associated Press. The 60-member church kicked out Jones in 2008. Jones' estranged daughter says the eviction arose from her father's reported penchant for dipping into the church's till to pay his own expenses.

Jones' wish to burn hundreds of copies of the Islamic holy book has drawn a wide chorus of protests. Gen. David Petraeus said on Monday the action could hurt U.S. troops, while hundreds of Afghans protested in Kabul and burned Jones in effigy. The Gainesville Fire Department has denied Jones a permit for the event -- but the pastor says he plans to go ahead with it anyway.

Indeed, so many high-profile people have spoken out against the plan that they may now outnumber the fringe church's 50-member congregation, raising the question of whether the condemnations are magnifying the cause of a very small group of extremists.

Here's a partial list of people who have condemned the planned bonfire:

"It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort," top commander in Afghanistan Gen. David Petraeus told the media. "It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems.

As "an act of patriotism," the media should not cover the burning, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said. She also said, "It's regrettable that a pastor in Gainesville, Florida, with a church of no more than 50 people can make this outrageous and distressful, disgraceful plan, and get the world's attention":

The terrorist attacks of 9/11, says the Vatican, "cannot be counteracted by an outrageous and grave gesture against a book considered sacred by a religious community."

Attorney General Eric Holder called the plan "idiotic and dangerous."

Presumed presidential candidate Mitt Romney told Politico
"Burning the Quran is wrong on every level. It puts troops in danger, and it violates a founding principle of our republic."

"I do not think well of the idea of burning anybody's Koran, Bible, Book of Mormon or anything else," Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour told reporters. "I don't think there is any excuse for it. I don't think it's a good idea."

"Any type of activity like that that puts our troops in harm's way would be a concern," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday.

"I appeal to people who are planning to burn the Quran to reconsider and drop their plans because they are inconsistent with American values and, as General Petraeus has warned, threatening to America's military," Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman said in a statement.

House Minority Leader John Boehner spoke out against the event, comparing it to the planned Islamic center near Ground Zero. "Well, listen, I just think it's not wise to do this in the face of what our country represents. ... Just because you have the right to do something in America, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called it "boneheaded and wrong" but said the protesters are protected by the First Amendment. "He has a right to do it," he said.

Actress Angelina Jolie spoke out against the plan while visiting Pakistan to raise awareness about the devastating floods. "I have hardly the words that somebody would do that to somebody's religious book," she said:

ok now obama is weighing in on this...what more does this idiot want? he already has the world's attention on his 40 member "church"...

Obama implores minister to call off Quran burning
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_quran_burning_obama

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is exhorting a Florida minister to "listen to those better angels" and call off his plan to engage in a Quran-burning protest this weekend.

Obama told ABC's "Good Morning America" in an interview aired Thursday that he hopes the Rev. Terry Jones of Florida listens to the pleas of people who have asked him to call off the plan. The president called it a "stunt."

"If he's listening, I hope he understands that what he's proposing to do is completely contrary to our values as Americans," Obama said. "That this country has been built on the notion of freedom and religious tolerance."

"And as a very practical matter, I just want him to understand that this stunt that he is talking about pulling could greatly endanger our young men and women who are in uniform," the president added.

Said Obama: "Look, this is a recruitment bonanza for Al Qaida. You could have serious violence in places like Pakistan and Afghanistan." The president also said Jones' plan, if carried out, could serve as an incentive for terrorist-minded individuals "to blow themselves up" to kill others.

"I hope he listens to those better angels and understands that this is a destructive act that he's engaging in," the president said of Jones.

Pastor says may halt Koran burning if White House asks
    (AFP)
WASHINGTON — A Florida pastor at the center of a global storm over plans to burn hundreds of Korans said Thursday he would likely call off the event if asked to by the Obama administration.
Terry Jones, head of the Dove World Outreach Center, told USA Today he had not been contacted by the White House, Pentagon or State Department about Saturday's planned ceremony on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
If he were "that would cause us definitely to think it over. That's what we're doing now. I don't think a call from them is something we would ignore," Jones told the daily.
US President Barack Obama on Thursday warned the burning ceremony would be a "recruitment bonanza" for Al-Qaeda, which carried out the 2001 attacks on the United States in which almost 3,00 people died.
"You know, you could have serious violence in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan," Obama told ABC television in an interview.
"This could increase the recruitment of individuals who'd be willing to blow themselves up in American cities, or European cities," he said.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has also condemned the plans as "disgraceful," while military leaders have warned it could endanger troops serving in Afghanistan and Pakistan, both Muslim countries.
The gun-toting pastor said the aim of Saturday's three-hour evening event in Gainesville, Florida, was to send a message to radical Islamists that "it is possibly time for us in a new way to actually stand up and confront terrorism."
But his tiny church of about 50 members has triggered fears that a violent wave of Islamic anger could ripple around the globe, similar to past controversies centered around Islam.
Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who sparked Muslim outrage in 2006 with a drawing of the Prophet Mohammed, told German media that satire like his was "provocation. Provocation should lead to reflection, to enlightenment, to knowledge. In this case, this is really not the case."
