I have dermatographia....aka writing on the skin....

Has anyone heard of it?

About 2 weeks ago I was ridiculously itchy....really REALLY itchy....mainly my legs, feet and hands. I was so itchy I couldn't sleep so stopped using soap etc blah blah. Then I noticed I started getting these red marks on my hands, arms, everywhere...but when I looked again they'd gone. Then I got a blood test 5 days ago and realised the tourniquet left marks on both of my arms for at least an hour. WTF?

I did some research....I have developed dermatographia....a weird skin thing where I can get my fingernail or anything really and very very gently write on my skin and it will come out in a red mark for half hour to an hour. My body is now really sensitive to touch and releases histamines when my skin is touched...hence the red marks. I just wrote my name on my skin with my nail --- I was barely touching it --- and look:



It's fucked up.

But hey...at least I'll never need a notepad again. :?

I draw patterns at work all the time.....

My bf is an artist and drew a picture on my back the other night. It looked great! He now calls me his "magna doodle"....you guys know what magna doodles are don't you?

I'd never heard of it....but apparently 5% of the population will have it at some stage in their life. And it can last for weeks, months, years or never go away?!

Nah, it doesn't hurt or anything.....however I have my shoulders and arms exposed a lot when I wear clothes and I'm a fairly scratchy person and now I constantly have red claw marks all over me. And yes, if I lean on things they leave marks! haha It's not that bad though....it probably sounds worse than what it is. I just have to be careful not to scratch...or write too many words on my arms! haha
