...and they really are Australia's Pearl Jam, aren't they!

Saw them in Newcastle... they first show of the Sunsets tour, their last ever tour. Supported by The Vines, who did a damn good job too!

Anyways, Powderfinger were amazing last night! Truly one of the best Aussie bands ever! Great set and the crowd vibe was 100% for the full 2 hours!

Anyone outside Australia like/know them much?

Yeah. I absolutely love Dream Days at the Hotel Existence.

"Lost and Running" is one of my recent favs and I don't understand how that song wasn't a hit over here in the US.

Otherwise, I would love to see them live, if they ever come to California....
    Great band

  • I seen the last night too and they were amazing! They played all of my favs which was great!
I have seen them 6 times and this was their best show by far!
Bit sad that we won't get to see them again!

  • I'm not too familiar with Powderfinger but everything I have heard from them I've liked. Australia puts out some good tunes...some of my fave Aussie bands are The John Butler Trio, JET, and The Beautiful Girls. I'll have to look a little further into Powderfinger.

They're definitely one of my favourite bands, I can't believe they're calling it a day after this tour. Did you buy the cd of the show after it finished? It would be a great souvenir to have.
Powderfinger are very pleased to announce that Abbey Rd Studios (yep, THAT Abbey Rd that The Beatles recorded at!) are going to be going on tour with the band and recording the shows on the 'Sunsets' Farewell Tour. A CD recording of each show will be available for sale at each venue directly after the show so you can relive the good times over and over! You'll also be able to buy a digital download or CD of your show from the Powderfinger website for a limited time after each show.

The band's FINAL EVER show in Brisbane on 13 November is going to be recorded exclusively for iTunes and is available to pre-order now

Wish we were back in Oz' to catch em'. Surely they'll do a DVD release of the last show. Now if they'd just encode it for N.A. players we'd be set! :D

i know theyve released fom odyssey#5 onwards, cos US version of OD5 has a different cover to the australian version.

their 2nd and 3rd albums, double allergic (1996) and internationalist (1998) are perfect albums. better than OD5 and vulture street. internationalist is when they started getting the attention in australia in 1998. OD5 is when they got huge with the radio hit, my happiness.

living type (off double allergic) live from 2008

My wife has just told me that she's got us tickets to their last Sydney show on Saturday for my birthday! We missed out when they first went on sale but she got them when they released the final batch of tickets.

I can't wait! I'll be getting the cd of the show and the dvd of the tour for sure!

Why are they calling it quits ? ..

cause they consider it the right time to bow out gracefully. they dont want to become that band who ends up playing the RSL clubs on past glories.

  • They're quitting cos Bernard is moving to Spain with his wife, and what he says goes. He's written some amazing tracks over the years but he's an arrogant twat. It clearly wasn't a group decision, poor old Hoggy, he didn't even know it was comin. Darren and cogs seemed ok with it.

cogsy seems hed be okay with just about everything though. i do recall reading an interview in rolling stone one year where he and bernard were, shall i say, at odds about certain things.* it was funny cause bernie was getting a bit heated and cogsy was basically pissing up against the wall. ah im gonna miss them.
i think tomorrow shall be powderfinger day.

    * bernie going off on his political rant and cogsy just bored with it all.

disclaimer: my mind is a bit vague i i might have remembered that differently than it actually was. i could go and check through my back copies... if i were so inclined and gave a shit. 8-)

Parables is great. It bugs me that they kind of disown it. It's easy to look back on it now, compare it to the rest of their albums and see that it sticks out like a sore thumb, however at the time I thought it was a cracking album. It doesn't gel with everything else they've done but it's still pretty awesome. It's almost like another band in some respects.

oh yeah its def a product of its time, like radioheads pablo honey. neither are the bands' faves and both bands have interesting things to say about them, but at least you can understand how both those albums got made. and in a way both parables and pablo had to happen to those bands for them to be who they are today.

For sure. Darren seems to acknowledge that. The rest of the band seemed embarrassed by Parables. I have great memories of a younger, long haired Powderfinger - tearing up the small stages. Their energy and purpose at that time was top notch. It was a good stepping stone for them. I agree that the album was over complicated, but as you so rightly say, it was a product of the time. They tried to do too much with the songs - but stripped back, some of those songs are fantastic.

Save your skin (soundcheck version) ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ELc2Ww4zjg Great song. Not out of place on anything they do know. Probably better! (There's not much of Parables on YouTube).

Walking Stick, Tail, Father's Pyramid, Grave Concern. Reap What You Sow! , before that. Great fucking song ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXzkW4TNnao. You could see the talent. They moved away too much from that raw sound for my liking. Probably why I speak so fondly of the early stuff : )
