I hate PJ's cover of "Crown of Thorn" Sorry but Eddie's voice doesn't go well with that song. Let Stoney sing it instead.

On the otherhand, I love their cover "Know Your Rights" It's even better than the original Clash version.

So which PJ cover do you like best and which you dislike the most.
Discuss :D

lately i've been into the covers they played on the VFC tour...all hard rocking, punk covers.

at this point, i'm a bit sick of RITFW and baba, so i'd put those down as dislikes, although that is probably too strong a word.

Never got into RITFW in my 7-8 years of liking pearl jam.

My favs are...Timeless Melody, I Wont Back Down, Dont Be Shy-

Is there a version of It's OK without the crowd singing so much?

Great= Sonic Reducer, Fuckin' Up, Baba, Masters of War, Little Wing.

Getting old but still great= RITW, Crazy Mary (still way better the VW's original).

Last Kiss is also better than all the "original" versions...but they just don't take it too seriously anymore (much like most of us).

I love Fortunate son, timeless melody and fuckin' up. Heard ritfw and Crazy Mary a little too often.
  • LOVE Sonic Reducer and Crazy Mary AND Crown of Thorns!
I think Ed does a fantasic job on most every cover..but, the point of a cover is to show respect and to add your own spin to it.

  • Love: Masters of War, Don't Be Shy, and Harvest Moon

Like: All Along the Watchtower (not the studio version!), You've Got to Hide Your Love Away

Sick of: RitFW, Crazy Mary, Last Kiss.. Although I enjoy Crazy Mary and RitFW in person, I cannot bring myself to listen to them often. And Last Kiss, although a strong cover, just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Best cover: Love Reign O'er Me

Worst: Probably when Eddie performed with the Doors at the Hall of Fame. I wasn't too big on his "Break On Through", or "Roadhouse Blues"

I'm sorry Ed, but his All Along the Watchtower was a joke.

Maybe too critical, but I just didn't feel it... at all...

Little wing, Baba O'Riley, Gimme some truth, Fucking up, The times they are-a-changing, Throw your arms around me, the star spangled banner (which they played after yellow ledbetter two years ago :D), 25 minutes to go, Masters of war, and all the ones I forget (The rest that is).
When Pearl Jam covers something, it's bound to be good
Tho I didn't really like the creep cover i heard some time ago :D
  • Bleed For Me, Little Wing, Fortunate Son, anything by NY

    are usually alright
  • masters of war, 25 minutes to go, know your rights, crown of thorns, bleed for me my only beef with the covers is when they end a show with RITFW or BABA when I leave a show I think the last song I hear should be a original! Love it when they turn the house lights on and you can see everyone rockin out

There isn't many covers I don't like BUT definately Ed attempting to cover any Bob Marley song IMO is a disaster.. his voice doesnt fit that kind of songs, I definately don't like it.

My favorite I Am A Patriot, the new version ( I like the old one too) but LOVE the new slower version, my favorite one if from the West Palm Beach show on 2003. Fortunately Son and I Believe in Miracles are close second... I really like all covers except for Bob Marley ones in essence. :D

Now that you mention it B. Driven to Tears was pretty horrible .... (sorry Ed) :p

  • Wish they'd play Let My Love Open The Door again.

Anything by X is amazing. I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts, New World and Poor Girl in particular. Maybe they could try Nausea, or Los Angeles (in LA with Exene ???) ...

Sonic Reducer and Fuckin Up are my favorite "standards".

They could add a full Save It For Later and i'd be happy.

Tired of Baba and RITFW, though i always rock hard to both.

Ones that i'm not fond of are Crazy Mary (just gets old after the 10th time, unlike Baba, i think) ... and Hide Your Love Away (just kinda bores me) ...

I think I Believe In Miracles is only an OK cover ... i could think of some more interesting Ramones covers if they wanted to give it a try.

If Eddie could get the lyrics right, I'd like to see A Quick One done a few more times. :D

Eh i guess that answers the question. Huh.

Honestly that was such a setlist killer for me when i was actualy at the show, pumped up and ready to rock, but in hindsight ... and hind-hearing ... it is really great.

The '92/'93 versions of both RITFW and Fuckin' Up were incredible, but they've slowed down as the years have dragged on and now the fire's gone out of both of them.

  • I think that Ed does a really good job of choosing covers that suit his voice/singing style. As an upcoming musician, I've found that there's kind of a science to that. You can't sing any and every song and make it sound good, you have to choose ones that fit your voice. And if it's a song that doesn't necessarily fit him, he adapts it to make it work.

That being said, there's only a couple covers that I don't like. Watchtower live was terrible, and Little Wing is so-so (although McCready's work is unbelieveable). I used to like Throw Your Arms Around Me until I heard Mark Seymour sing it, then I realized that's how that song is supposed to be sung. Ever since then, Ed's version seems kinda second rate.

I wouldnt agree with that. If anything, the band has picked up the tempo on those songs. Listen to a 92 version of Fuckin Up or the LO2L version, then listen to an 06 version. Much faster now.

My favs are Crown of Thorns and Bleed for Me- specifically the versions from Philly 05'-

I would be happy if they NEVER PLAYED LAST KISS again! It was cool when they first did it and it was for a good cause, but its kind of a cruel joke now.
