I Ran In To Jack Irons Today And He Told Me The Real Reason Why He Left The Band.
In 1997, the band went into the studio to work on their fifth album Yield. Each member brought in their notebooks containing a handful of composed lyrics and music already written. They all handed their notebooks to album producer Brendan O’Brien to look the songs before they began rehearsing. Brendan laughed hysterically after seeing Jack’s notebook because it only contain one song that barely had any lyrics to it. To further humiliate the situation, the members stripped away the original title of the song and gave it “The Red Dot.” They didn’t even wanted to called it “Untitled.” “A little red dot is all your song going to get,” said Eddie Vedder, frustratingly.
Eddie was so angry he demanded an explanation for his lack of contribution. Jack told the band that he’s been having sleeping problems, mainly insomnia. Jack said the insomnia troubles dated back to the recording session of No Code, specifically, from the song “Around The Bend.” Jack was told that Eddie had written a lullaby for him to sing to his son. Jack was so grateful for that track and he wanted to sing to his son after the album and tour.
After the No Code tour, Jack would try to rehearse his voice so he can sing the lullaby to his son during bed time. Unfortunately, Jack would fall asleep as he was singing the lullaby to his son, who would cry all night long every time Jack falls asleep and stops singing. This caused Jack to go into insomnia and develop bad sleeping habits. Jack’s sleeping troubles became so bad that he had to leave the Yield tour U.S. tour and hasn’t returned since.
He told me a couple of months later after leaving the group, he figured out a way to stop his insomnia. He would just play a CD of “Around The Bend” instead of singing it himself, that way both he and his son would fall asleep peacefully. He thought about coming back to the group but decided not to because he might fall asleep during a show if the band decided to play “Around The Bend” during the set list. It was only for the band’s best interest.
