I enjoy chess- which I understand is the overall purpose of playing anything. But i want to be good at it- im "ok" at it, probably at the lower end of the moderate skill level but I want to be better. I dont know if continuing to just play makes you better, do you think learning new strategy is the way? Playing against people who are better than you and kind of seeing their style? Reading books? Watching videos? Is my chess IQ like my regular IQ- just stuck with it?
Any real good chess players out there? Howd you get that way?

I enjoy playing chess, although I don't consider myself to be very good at it. Obviously, playing helps you get better...the more you see, the more you learn. I think my biggest problem is that I get too offensive-minded and leave some easy opportunities for my opponent to counter.

As with playing an instrument: play with people who are better than you and ask them to show you/explain to you what they are doing.

I love chess. I've actually played in tournaments.

Seriously...it's one of the greatest games in existance. It requires thinking and strategy, and for you to pay close attention to all facets of the game. It's the most fun when you play a complete stranger, whom you know nothing about.

Understanding the game, and practicing. Also, develop your own strategy...and always think about your next move assuming that what you've already planned works out the way you perceived it. I think it's also smart to pay close attention to what your opponents does, at times can you sometimes predict what their moves will be and it will help you make up your own game plan. Simply, chess is about outsmarting your opponent.

I personally think one of the keys to chess is adaptation and improvisation, because a single move can change the entire dynamic of a game.

This is just me though. I learned while I was in the 5th grade, and my goal was to beat my old man...it took me probably a year until I finally beat him. It was fucking epic. I've never read books or watched videos, I've just had my ass kicked a number of times and done my share of defeating too.

That is a big problem. You should play ruthlessly.

so wanna play a game dc?
I really like chess as well and I prefer to play another person, not a computer. I don't know anybody who is better than me and I'm not that great, (I'm no Bobby Fischer). Glad to see at least SOME people still play...

Sure, but we'll have to arrange something when I'm not at work where everything is blocked.

I'd love to play too, I'm probably rusty...I don't have many people to play as not a lot of people are as into it as I am...and my girlfriend has really no interest in learning.

I love Chess. It is all about thinking atleast 10 steps ahead, 5 of your possible moves and 5 of your oponant's possible moves and keep them all in mind when you make your next move, and more.... 8-)

    What a refreshing excercise....

My best friend is a Chess Nut!, he goes to tournaments, in Philly , Jersey, D.C. ( we live in ny) he's obbsessed with it, he treid to get me into it, but he's so advanced i just feel kind of feeble. But he'll make whole weekends around it. Kind of fun when there's like 9 guys sittin around hotel room smoking pot, drinking and playing, this is how they wind down after a day of competing.

It's a different kind of game, when you lose you really don't get mad at your opponent, but at yourself.

My Big advise about Chess would be to learn the game and play it.
Beginners can always win a game of Chess as it is just about reading the possibilities.......
Chess almost rocks as much as Pearl Jam.
