I have seventy-five theory students and thirty-five piano students this semester. I'm busily learning their names this week. I want to know them all well by this Friday.(!) :D
Last year I thought 13 different classes with a total of over 500 students. I am good with names, but by the end of the year there were still around 50 that I did not absorb.
This year I teach 9 classes and should have a total of around 350 students (around 75 of them I thought last year too).

    Good luck.
Do you use photo rosters? I find those help me somewhat because I can study them.
Nope. I just have a really good memory.
Still can't believe I met Mike Mccready at the Guggenheim and got a pic with him!!!!!

You really kinda pooped on this thread because this video presents such a negative view of teachers.

Good teachers aren't like the self-righteous jerk in this video. :geek:

Did you listen to the video? It portrays a VERY positive view of teachers. Sometimes an educator is the ONLY form of discipline a child receives. I received this from my friend, a chemistry teacher.

One more teacher here! :) I've already started some private lessons but I won't have a full schedule until next week. Schools start on Monday (13th/Sep) here.. I kinda got used to relaxing during summer holidays and it will be tough to get used to my new working routine.. But doing absolutely nothing for a long time can be even more tiring sometimes... Isn't it a bit strange...?

Just went back to work today! The worst part about being a teacher is getting back into the routine after so much time off! But, really, I can't think of anything else I would rather do..unless it was see a PJ concert everyday! ;)

I shut it off after the guy was smugly bragging that he called parents at dinner, blah, blah, blah. It just seemed like he was taking joy in being nasty to me. Maybe it was the tone of his voice but, ugh. Being a teacher is not an excuse to treat people badly. :wtf:

You shut it off right before it got good! The poem went on to have a nicer message... about the difference we make...and we do make a difference! Try just watching without the volume...just read it...It is an important message to remember...because we should endeavor to make our difference in a positve and respectful manner! I work with the "troubled" kids and the parents who cringe when the teacher approaches, so I was skeptical on the first listen...but really it wasn't all bad... ;)

its the kind of thing they would play at beginning of the year teacher meetings to get us PUMPED UP... its not meant to be taken that literally... just a fun FUCK YOU to anyone thats ever looked down on teaching

and if you finished listening, the phone call was actually to let the parents know that their child did something incredibly admirable... thats a nice thought... teachers checking in to let parents know when their kid did something good... if only our hands weren't so full with the bad apples :x

How long did you guys go to college uni for?

Here it is 4 years full time. I am near the end of my 3rd year at uni, but only half way through the degree. Man it is a long journey. And one assignment I have atm is the hardest one yet. Comparing the New South Wales curriculum (where I am) with the curriculum of somewhere else in the world. It's messing with my head.

    Thank you. I appreciate it.

Originally the course convener said to compare and contrast another Australian curriculum, only recently did he say we could go international. I started doing Northern Territory, because I thought they would have a heavy indigenous section. So I thought that would be a key 'contrast' But this is proving to be quite tricky, cause there is all this other b.s they want us to do.

Atm I'm evaluating online educational resources for teachers and students and planning a lesson on it. Not too bad, but assignments are never really fun.

    Thanks again

I am glad I am not a teacher in Florida... but we all know why we teach, and I think most of us have an idea about what it entails ;)

    The long vacations!

I have been back for a week now and already have a few days off because of Jewish holidays (A nice slow start). Things will get intense starting October. I was surprised at how easy it was for me getting back in to things. Dare I say, I am actually enjoying myself :o . Still teaching History, but also teaching a new subject this year and am having a lot of fun with it so far. The best part is that I do not have to teach 8 grade classes. What a god awful age that is...

3 years for the B.A. In the last year of the B.A. I started the teaching degree which took 2 years. So 4 years total for B.A. and teaching degree. Besides that, the way things are set up here, the first year of teaching is considered a kind of internship and you have to take a kind of course that accompanies the year.
