My sister played this non stop when I was about 14 to try and sway me away from Iron Maiden but it didn't work and I still don't really like them. They are undeniably great songwriters and I do like the odd song but with the amount of good music you're listening to Ed I don't think you're going to find The Smiths filling a void in your life. It's hard to really feel their music when you're not from the Thatcher generation and if you're not that's good fortune on your part! :)
Like a book among the many on a shelf...

Great band, I would go for the singles too. Funny as I've got older find the music less depressing than I used to - must be an age thing. Hubby really loves them.

Dont know why there is comparison between Smiths n The Cure, Morrisey and Smith sounds similar a weeny bit or maybe that's cos they are English and The Smiths' music is the same stuff and maybe have one album or a few songs like The Cure.

I think Ed is the only lyricist that can come close to Morrissey! Morrissey is really amazing (if you actually listen to and think about what he is saying).

As for where to start, try the Singles or Louder Than Bombs. To be honest it took me a while to get into the Smiths (I actually started with a Morrissey greatest hits first), but the Smiths/Morrissey are easily in my top 3 favorite bands (along with Pearl Jam).

I've always found it real easy to get my friends into Morrissey/the Smiths, they are just so good!!!

I agree 100%! I love the Smiths and I've listened to a lot of music from the Cure and they just don't compare. Neither band really made a bad album, but there are certain Cure songs that just bore me.... :)

The Cure are one of the finest bands of our time without a shadow of doubt. So many aspects to them and they are truly fucking amazing.

Both have moody, introspective lyrics, although Morrissey was definitely the better songwriter. But their music was each very distinct and not that much alike. Morrissey and Robert Smith also had some petty feud as I recall. Don't remember what it was about but Morrissey is a famous vegan and Robert Smith said something to the effect of he likes meat because Morrissey is a vegan.

The Smiths rate in my top five all favorite bands. I just wish I'd gotten into them in my teens. There was very little public exposure to them here in the US. I think also they're one of those bands that if you don't get into them when you're young, sensitive, and idealistic you'll probably never really get into them. My favorite album is The Queen is Dead, but they're all five star albums in my opinion.

    Oh
    My
    God

Disintegration, Self Titled, Bloodflowers, Three Imaginary Boys, Head On The Door, Wish, ah my god the list goes on, these albums are just so much more amazing than anything The Smiths have done. The Cure are just so complex and deep it's amazing. All The Smiths were just generic up beat tunes with whiny lame singing.

Dam you clearly haven't listened to The Cure! 8-)
