I was a HUGE Soundgarden fan back in the day, and I'm sure if you want to feel nostalgia, they would be the choice, but Arcade Fire is new and refreshing and writes much more interesting music.
It's like going back to the early nineties and deciding between Soundgarden and The Rolling Stones or something.. Go with the band in its prime for the live experience. I would have killed to see Pearl Jam in the early nineties. I was too young.
I am going to see Arcade Fire, but the only reason I am choosing them over Soundgarden is because I have never seen them and I saw SG at the Vic on Thursday night. I highly recommend seeing SG. Great show.
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side

Tough call, Arcade Fire are awesome live, but they will be around for a long time to come. It would have to be Soundgarden for me, so jealous of those of you who get to see them tonight!
its really a shame that you have to pick :(
50/50 perhaps? or is that not possible at that venue??
I would go for Arcade fire if pushed, but i would be seriously pissed if ed got up with soundgarden for hungerstrike :?
Not one ounce of me understands the love that Arcade Fire receives. I simply do not find their music appealing at all.
So, that considered, Soundgarden for me is a no brainer.
Same here boss, haha I can't believe there's even a debate, but to each their own. To the original poster, enjoy the show whatever you decide, wish I was there right now...
I dont understand what "Prime" has to do with anything. If its possibly the last time you'll ever be able to see a band shouldnt that take precedence? So some of you would rather see a newer band in their prime than see Led Zeppelin if you had a chance?
Whoever scheduled them to play simultaneously should seriously be shot. I mean really. Who does that? Was there another top-tier band playing at the same time as Pearl Jam a few years ago? (I really don't know, I'm just curious if this always happens.) They should both be on the biggest stage back-to-back to close it out.
They did the same thing at ACL. Ben Harper and Dead weather on at the same time on complete opposite sides of the park. So I watched a bit of Dead weather, ran errr slid (it was muddy) my way over to catch 3 Ben songs then back to Dead weather. They really need to figure out how to schedule the popular acts better at festivals. Ended up seeing DW again here and it was AWESOME. Ben never tours here, so that is why I wanted to catch a bit of him live.
I understand festivals are tight on time slots as far as booking, but yeah they need to try and configure the popular bands all on the same stage or close by to each other if time is a conflict.

its impossible to cater to everyone's musical tastes... i think they do make an effort to have bands that are pretty different on at the same time... usual pop/indie vs. rock (strokes vs. gaga, phoenix vs. green day, AF vs. SG)
makes sense to me... get as many bands in in a short time without having a rigid hierarchy of popularity... some people like having choices and others hate it
AF vs. SG is definitely the hardest decision I've seen on the lolla schedule in my 5 years attending tho
Just watched some Arcade Fire videos to find out what I've been missing out on all this time. Turns out I've been missing out on some mediocre indie rock...

Yeah you may wanna spend a little more time with them. I have never seen a band actually be worthy of 100% of all the ridiculous hype and praise they get. They are the real deal and are hands down the greatest band to emerge from the 00s so far.

I agree. I bought their first album, Funeral in 06 a few years after it came out without reading or knowing any of the hype around them and I loved it. Same thing with their second album. The only thing I knew about the band when i first heard them was that U2 came out to one of their songs in 2005. They are definitely a great band, but some of the songs might take a while to get used to.
I can't get enough of their latest album!

All amazing songs! Also Love Neighborhoods 1 and 2 (Tunnels and Leika), Half Light I, Sprawl II, Neon Bible, In the Backseat, Rococo, Suburbs (continued), Crown of Love, hell I think there's only one song of theirs I don't like at the moment.

I figured I'd give Arcade Fire a proper listen since so many PJ fans are torn between them and Soundgarden.
I listened to six songs on YouTube. I never cared much for the Cure or Joy Division and I can't anything find anything interesting in Arcade Fire, who sound very derivative of those bands and other bands like that. Also, the Cure and Joy Division at least had some good songs.
But whatever. People can like what they like. I'll take the mindbending jams and raw passion of Soundgarden, who sounded incredible in the videos of last night's show. Kinda warms my heart to know that they can still sound that good, especially Chris! Cornell has definitely redeemed himself after that horrid solo album he just put out.
arcade fire is a band that i hated for a long time...i've warmed up to about half the songs on neon bible and dig the new singles i've heard. not a fan of their first record....they don't suck by any means, i just think soundgardens albums blow theirs out of the water.

My music collection begins with late 1920s Louis Armstrong and covers the range of genres and eras up to newly released materials. It includes plenty of The Cure and Joy Division. All that being said, Arcade Fire is one of the most incredible, inventive, and important bands I have ever heard. They are the best live band on the planet, and aside from Pearl Jam, there isn't another close. They have clearly been influenced by a number of artists (I hear Springsteen more than Joy Division or The Cure), but they are clearly not derivative of any act. There is nothing more beautiful in music right now than Arcade Fire playing Wake Up live.
I loved Soundgarden when I was 14. Honestly, it hasn't held up that well for me over time. There's a ton of throwaway songs mixed in with the gems. I prefer Euphoria Morning to any Soundgarden album. And added to all that is that Cornell has thrown away his voice of the gods through chain smoking. I have seen him live on several occasions of late, and you never know what you are going to get. His vocals on Hunger Strike from the LA Pearl Jam show were absolutely horrid. I haven't listened to the Lolla show or the Vic show, so maybe he's doing better now. But I would guess it still varies night to night.
It makes much more sense to live in the present tense.
Boroff u are right that Cornell's voice sounded bad in 2003 at that Pearl Jam show but that was 7 years ago, and Sunday night he and the whole band sounded absolutely stellar.

I wouldn't be so sure. Alotta people were saying he sounded great at the Showbox show and that wasn't the case at all. I realize that song for song SG might have the most hard to sing songs out of any band, but if the Showbox show was an indication they need to change up their setlist or tune down.

Yeah, I just listened to some of the Vic performance. Nowhere near old Cornell. He killed his voice, and that makes me incredibly sad.

Cornell sounded fine at the LA show when he sang Hunger Strike, he hit pretty much all of the high notes apart from the very highest one at the end. What's more, at the Showbox show he fucking nailed Beyond The Wheel, arguably the most vocally demanding song in the Soundgarden catalog:

surely soundgarden will tour though right? I mean they want to cash in the money cow why else would they be putting out a greatest hits album.
Notalgia would call hard for me because i never saw soundgarden live.
I've seen Arcade Fire twice on each album but i've never seen them at a festival. It has been smaller clubs.
I would probably see arcade fire because they are in their prime.
