Anthony Weiner Goes Ballistic At GOP For Killing 9/11 Responders Health Care Bill (VIDEO)
House Republicans late Thursday were able to corral enough votes to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to those sickened by toxins resulting from the 9/11 attacks.
In the process, they set off a host of fiery speeches and denunciations from their Democratic colleagues and produced a veritable YouTube moment from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y), whose district includes many of the affected.
At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote.
When the final tally was announced, there were 255 representatives for the measure, 159 against. The defeat of the bill, which would have provided free health care to those affected during the 9/11 rescue and recovery, likely means that the court system will have to settle compensation issues.
Weiner spoke right before the vote when it was clear that Republican lawmakers would stake their opposition on grounds of procedural concerns. But for the grace of the C-SPAN cameras, he managed to stay physically behind his lectern.
"The gentleman will sit!" he declared at one point, addressing, it is believed, Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). "The gentleman is correct in sitting!"

I saw this today on MSNBC and I gotta say, as a republican i'm pretty pissed off. This just might cost the republicans my vote. Although I haven't heard a GOP response yet, I can't believe there is any reason that this should not have been passed. If anyone should be getting full health care coverage it is these people.0

It's not healthcare that I fear......it's big overpowered governments.0 -

You speak with arrogance as if the democrats are perfect. Our whole system is fucked. I believe that less than 50% of this almighty stimulus fund has been spent. If our democratic presidential leader cares so much why doesn't he send the rest to the troops to help them out if he's not going to bring them home.0 -

curious, what makes you believe that dems are the lesser of two evils. Who is more evil:
The people that just want to spend spend spend while making the people believe it's all for a good cause and that it needs to be done OR ELSE. And then only about half the money gets spent and we have no idea what they do with the rest while they drive this country more and more and more and more into debt.
OR, the people that vote against it while looking like the bad guy as if they do not care.
I believe the second one. Up until today when I saw the topic at hand on the news anyway. These people deserve full blown free health care. pretty pissed off at the republican party. This could really hurt them....as it should. It's fucking disgarcefull to vote against a bill to help these people just because they do not want to agree on anything.Post edited by OnTheEdge on0 -
this is an example of why good people, when pushed to the absolute limits, do bad things.
eventually they will just say fuck it. take care of your own ass. i don't give a shit.
and you have no one to blame but yourself, for letting the people who are supposed to be looking out for us, get away with it.0 -
weiner is exactly right in this case. i love his passion. it is nice to see some fire from someone in government, other than the party of hate, erm i mean party of no passionately screaming "NO" at every piece of proposed legislation....the funny thing is the guy he was yelling at, peter king, voted in favor of what weiner was speaking about....."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

I don't know a whole lot either. All I know is that they tried to pass a bill to give 9/11 rescue workers health care because some of them are sick with respiratory problems and from what I can gather all but 12 republicans voted no on it. Maybe there's more to it....i don't know. They showed it on MSNBC and of course all they interviewed was democrats. Haven't been able to hear the republicans side of the story yet.0 -

correction....Democrats were the only ones who WANTED to be interviewed.
Republicans not wanting to admit they are heartless, soul sucking parasites is understandable.0 -
after reading up on what was going on in this session a summary:
the democrats introduced legislation to give money to paramedics, fire fighters, and police officers that participated in the response to the 9/11 attacks for government subsidized health care. many of which are suffering from chronic respiratory and lung issues since the exposure to the toxic air on that day and the subsequent days of search and rescue and clean up and are unable to work. these responders are the ones that the republicans held up as "heroes" and "real americans" shortly after the attacks. instead of passing this legislation, the republicans wanted to add a provision to the bill that no funding would go to illegal immigrants for health care or anything else. weiner represents these responders and felt it was unfair for the republicans to defend a procedural move and principle rather than help those responders that they held up as american heroes not 9 years ago. the democrats denied the republicans the right to offer ammendments to the bill. as senate procedures dictate, when the majority party denies or prevents the minority party from making ammendments to the bill, it takes a 2/3 majority vote (67 votes) to pass the bill. all republicans but 12 voted against this legislation.....it is fucking disgusting to me that the gop will stick together and reveal their hatred for illegal immigrants at the expense of the health of those that they held up as "american heroes" in the days after 9/11. to let their hatred of illegals guide them to vote against the responders that gave their lives, gave their health, and saved countless lives in those days makes me want to vomit. i hope that the american people will wake the hell up and see this vote for what it is.....a vote against american heroes to make sure that illegal immigrants are made to be and remain inferior...and i hope the american voter will hold this against the gop come november. to all the conservatives on this board i have one question...how the hell can you support and defend the actions of the gop senators???? please feel free to reply and try to make me see your side..."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

So why couldn't they just add the provisions to the bill so it could pass. So that's what this is about. The democrats needed a slick way to insure the ILLEGALS. Why the fuck do they always have to add a twist to every bill. We all want 9/11 rescue workers to have hc. But what the fuck does that have to do with ILLEGAL immigrants. Fucking democrats tried pulling a fast one. Although i'm still upset that the 9/11 rescue workers still do not have hc, I feel much better knowing the other side of it. Re-write the bill dems and i'm sure it will pass. What will be next, ILLEGALS will be allowed to vote,hmmmmmm.....I wonder who they would vote for.0 -
maybe we need to remind all our members of congress and senate, that when they vote on any bill they are no longer republicans or democrats. they are there to vote the consciences of the people they represent.
it's not a game. stop messing with peoples lives.0
