Kings of Leon gig cancelled due to bird shit

At least that appears to be the rumor this morning.

Some other stories are coming out, but the main one appears to be that the bassist got shit on by a pigeon and the band walked off the stage after 3 songs, citing "safety concerns" Nathan, the drummer, tweeted the same thing and that there will be refunds for everybody.

The KoL message board seems to confirm this, as people up front were saying that members from the 2 opening acts had the same thing happen.

Wow. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I had traveled a long distance and spent a lot of $$ only to see 3 songs.

Exactly. There are a lot of people that probably paid a ton of money to travel to this show and they cancel for shit????

yes i heard this earlier. tonight is the first time i did not get tickets to see them. i have seen them on every tour through st. louis and have met the guys and partied with them backstage on no less than 5 occasions over the years. they have bought several vintage guitars and basses from a trusted local vintage guitar dealer (a relative of my own bass player and apraiser for a vintage guitar pricing guide) i have known them since they were in their early 20s and late teens rocking their '70s porno staches...i know their commitment to their fans, their music, their craft, and their corporate sponsors/record label. i know for a fact they are stoked to be out on the road playing outdoor amphitheaters and headlining them, and playing new unreleased material on this tour across the us, where they have always struggled to gain the fan appreciation that they have in europe.... they have worked too hard to get to where they are and i doubt that a little bird shit will make them cancel an entire show. that said, i have attented about 50 shows at verizon amphitheater over the last 15 years and yes the birds have always been a problem for the artists... but the greater issue is the midwestern summer heat and humidity. according to my trusty thermometer is was about 93 degrees at show time, and i don't care who you are, playing in a 90+ degree outdoor arena is never an optimal concert condition, especially when it is repeated day after day... as evidenced by tom petty's band mates collapsing on stage due to heat illness last week..and i can also say that i have been told there are internal issues within the band, so maybe this was just an excuse to mask a bigger issue????? this is a band that has never ever been able to resist the urge to have a fist fight between members.....so be careful of what you read the next several days....

Well, I ended up getting really good seats to see them in Hartford in a couple weeks, so hopefully they can take care of their internal issues by then

They do have a gig in Chicago tonight. Should be interesting to see how that goes.

    pussies.

My dad went to a Who show in 1968 or 69 and said Keith Moon was rocking out so hard on the drums that he hit his head on the side of one of the drums and split his forehead open. He said he had blood running down his face but he didn't miss a beat. At the end of the song they had a guy come out and put a few stitches in so he could finish the show. Now that's rock and roll. Now I know where Kol stand and how much they care about their fans. I bet the Backstreet Boys would have continued the show.

I don't want to hear this happy horseshit about the heating not being ideal conditions for artists. I watched PJ play in KC back in 2003 in a freakin' MONSOON for 2 1/2 hrs. THAT was not idea, but they did not shy away from it for the fans.

nevermind, St. Louis. Kinda sucks. Hope they reschedule it, maybe to another venue, for the fans.

On a funnier note. One of the philly indie/alt. music local dj's (online) started playing "Sex On Fire" and half way through cut it off saying that a pigeon crapped on it

When PJ played Sydney last year it was 108 degrees. Eddie was sick with flu, coughing and throwing his guts up at the side of the stage whenever got a break and they still managed 28 songs as well as under pressure with Ben Harper.

I was front row for this show last night. Yes, there were pigeons up above crapping where Jared stands on stage. This happened to the first two bands as well. However, they just avoided that spot and kept going. I think adjustments could have been made and the show could have gone on.

its no fun to get shit on, pretty gross but they weren't thinking of their fans, and how disappointed they were.

Yeah, like he could have just moved and stood somewhere else on the stage!!! Fucking hell, I've never heard of anything quite so ridiculous. Fair enough if the stage was being showered in shit, but come on!

I still don't understand how a pigeon crapped in Jared's mouth. Was he looking up in the air while drumming or did the pigeon just have good aiming skills? KOL are starting to get on my nerves, ever since they hit ht big with their last album they've become very arrogant seems like. They just walked out of the arena without saying anything to their fans. I'm suppose to see them in Aug. so hope all goes well.

(CNN) -- Pooping pigeons forced the Kings of Leon to abandon their St. Louis, Missouri, concert after just three songs Friday night, the rock band's management said Saturday.

An infestation of the birds in the rafters of the Verizon Amphitheatre bombarded the musicians as soon as they took the stage, according to Andy Mendelsohn of Vector Management.

"Jared (Followill) was hit several times during the first two songs," Mendelsohn said of the band's bassist.

"It's not only disgusting -- it's a toxic health hazard. They really tried to hang in there," Mendelsohn added.

Followill, who describes himself as a "germophobe," said there was already poop on his pedal and carpet when he walked out on stage.

The aerial attack began during the opening song -- "Closer" -- when he was bombed in the face. His bass tech wiped most of it off with a sanitary wipe, he said.

Excrement struck each of his arms over the next two numbers, he said.

"I was hit by pigeons on each of the first three songs," he said. "We had 20 songs on the set list. By the end of the show, I would have been covered from head to toe."

Followill said he couldn't see the pigeons above him and he had no idea how many there were.

"The last thing I was going to do was look up ... but if that was only a couple, we must have caught them right after a big Thanksgiving dinner," he quipped.

The group was determined to play for St. Louis fans even though they had fair warning earlier about the pigeon problem.

Opening bands The Postelles and The Stills came offstage complaining of getting riddled with large amounts of excrement, their publicist said.

"The Kings of Leon decided to carry on regardless," they said in a statement released Saturday. "The band felt it would be unfair to the fans to cancel the show at that late moment."

"We couldn't believe what The Postelles and The Stills looked like after their sets," Followill said. "We didn't want to cancel the show, so we went for it. We tried to play. It was ridiculous."

Followill's mother called him when she heard from friends at the show that it had been abruptly ended.

"I was attacked, Mom, but not by humans," Followill said he told her.

Venue managers told the band's representatives earlier Friday about "a significant pigeon infestation problem with summer shows over the years, but they were doing all they could to fix it," the statement said.

"We want to apologize to our fans in St. Louis and will come back as soon as we can," Mendelsohn said.

Concertgoers were apparently spared the aerial bombardment.

"No fans got pooped on as far as we know," the band's publicist said.

Verizon Amphitheatre and concert promoter Live Nation did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment.

The band is set to perform at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday night.

Seems like the Chicago show went off without a hitch, so that's good.

However, this band should be ashamed of themselves for only playing 18-20 song sets. They have 4 good albums to pull from (and are even playing 3-4 songs from the new record).

Is it asking too much? Or is it what should be expected when a band only has 4 albums out? For shits and giggles, I took a quick look at PJ's No Code tour. They were routinely playing between 24-28 songs a night (sometimes more). I know we're spoiled with them, but geez.

Oh well, as long as I get to hear Trani in Hartford, I'll be happy.
