It's horrible to think that, sometime in the near future, I may not be able to experience the excitement and anticipation of buying a CD. If buying an album is reduced to the click of a button then it will seem utterly sterile and deviod of feeling.
I still love the physical CD and about 80% of my music purchases are still physical CD. I do love my Ipod and rip everything to it.
Like a couple others said, I am a sucker for bonus tracks on albums that you can only get on Itunes, so purchase these quite a bit too. The one thing that drives me crazy is I seem to be cursed with my home computers failing/crashing all the time. Last week I bought the new Black Keys album on Itunes and a week later, still cannot get it burned to disc. Right now I am wishing I would have just bought the damn physical CD so I could actually listen to it, as my sound card does not work either.
No time to be void or save up on life, you gotta spend it all.

Well, whatever the name, you gotta make this happen. You're 19 so its not uber-creepy. I wanna know what Bieber Nation thinks about the death of the CD.

I'll be honest i'll download an album first and listen to it, if i like it then I'll go buy it on vinyl...if its not on vinyl, then cd, if i dont like the album i delete it....digital is good for previewing and transportation on trains buses and such but when it comes down to it nothing replaces 12 inches of colorful art

well...
as a lot of you know, Chris & I are releasing out 1st album. actually, it's already been released online, but we're gearing up for the physical (cd) release in the next week or 2. it's a trip, to be honest....they assign you your own barcode....
anyway, not sure if i'm adding much to this conversation yet, but....to me, personally...it means a lot. we'd love to have a vinyl available, but it is NOT cheap & we're doing this ourselves. i've always been one that hears a song or album, listens to it a few more times & then buys the cd/vinyl. yes. i download torrents...but if i don't like it, i delete it. it's good to get an idea of what you're buying before you buy it....if you like it, buy it.
there's something to be said for physically holding the album (or cd) in your hands. you can look through the artwork, read the lyrics, liner notes & thank you's. it makes it more personal, i think.
i love Apple---but the iTunes LP does not cut it for me...at all. give me something i can hold & look at. notice all of the little things...
again, that's just me. i do think that cd prices were way too high...and in a lot of places, they still are. going through this process has shed some light on just how much it costs to produce cds in bulk. and it is NOT expensive. if they want to save the cd, lower the prices.
I get the convenience of digital, being able to carry around hundreds of albums in your pocket. But for me there is something more to a CD. I grew up in a vinyl household where all my mom and dad's albums were LP's. Never saw a CD until about 1990 and didn't own a CD player until 1992. I couldn't of cared less about vinyl at that point, CD's were it for me. I have about 500 CD's now and will continue to buy them for as long as they are available.
i too grew up in a vinyl household
first 3 vinyl's i remember looking at and listening to as a kid were born to run, dark side of the moon and quadrophenia. funny enough that those are my 3 fave bands.
i continue to buy cd's and will always do so. i just rip them to my laptop and then put them on my ipod. the only thing i download is concerts from bands.

I was all about the cd for many years. Then I got my iPod and nearly iPood my pants. So awesome, all that music in one little gizmo. I would pre-order albums, for bonus tracks or the convenience......but refreshing iTunes until it appears in your account is nowhere near waiting outside that record store at midnight in a huge line for VS. I still have my iPod and use it all the time, but I much prefer putting on a cd and perusing the artwork. I've always been, and always will be, a "full package" kind of guy when it comes to music. The artwork and liner notes are all part of it for me. For instance, I just got Brandon Boyd's solo disc in the mail today, and it's in nothing but a cardboard slipcase with no book, nothing. I was pretty disappointed.
So while you can get the book on iTunes sometimes, it's just not the same. I've found I'm even going out and buying cd's that I already bought on iTunes.
What pisses me off though, is that record stores don't generally seem to carry new releases anymore on the actual release date unless it's a huge pop artist, like Lady Gaga. I had a helluva time finding the second Dead Weather disc when it first came out. Cause HMV is now more movies than music. And Future Shop's music section is pitiful now (it used to be my go-to place on release day). Best Buy is a bit better, but their prices suck.
A friend of mine works for CD plus, and he says that company is gearing up for total digital distribution in 2 years, as the cd is apparently dying that quickly. I hope not. I love my cd's.

Another vote for CD's. I have bought a significant amount of albums on iTunes and Amazon, but I'd much rather have the CD. Now I pretty much will only get the CD. I have gone back and bought CD's for albums that I previously bought on iTunes or Amazon, just to have the artwork and something to hold. And they sound better too.
As far as getting CDs on their release date, if you use amazon often I highly recommend becoming a amazon prime member. It's something like $70 a year but you get free 2 day shipping on everything sold directly through amazon. Another plus - release day delivery. If you pre-order a CD or DVD, it's in your mailbox on the release day. For me, it's just as convinent as downloading, except you get the CD!
That's what I was thinking. So much for my experiment.

Dammit! Well, kudos to you for giving it a shot. I wanna join the Bieber fan club just for the holiday vinyl. I hear he's doing a cover of Neil Young's Harvest Moon this year.
