Tipping Friends...

So say your friend is a waiter, bartender, hair stylist...whatever

you go to them for their service, then comes the bill.

You want to give a big tip because they're your friend.

But then you start to second guess yourself because you don't want them to think of it as a charity case. The act could come across as though you think you're better than them, such as saying, 'look how well off I am and how much you need this money.'

Then you start to think what if they think any tip is a charity case and should I be tipping them at all?

what do you do?

Do think of tipping other servers as charity?? I used to be a server and if I had a friend serve me I would probably leave the standard and maybe a bit extra. Nothing over the top but a nice tip. :)

Though I did have a friend of a friend who left a salon to have her own hair business in her own home...I feel like I left her a bit less of a tip.

I think a nice tip is jsut fine - nothing over the top, but just because they're your friend doesn't mean you can get away with not tipping either.

alright, time to change the dynamic....

suppose they comp a drink or food dish for you. Do you add the cost of what was comped to the tip?

    I'm assuming comp is sneak?

and I say no - they took the risk of doing so, and I'm assuming no friend would force their friend to give them free refreshments that may jeopardize their job.

always tip high, huge for friends if you can afford it. enormous tips are never seen as charity.
shitty service is a completely different story.

just tip what you would if you didn't know them...if they expect more from you because you're friends, well, that doesn't sound very friendly

depends on the quality of their service you would tip accordingly and if they were to comp you, return the favor and tip extra

as a general rule i would say yes

when i was a server it would always bug me when people didnt repay my "generosity" with a better tip... sure the logic is faulty cause i am technically stealing from the company then expecting to make more $ from it... BUT most servers are overworked and treated like shit... so it works out :)

Wife and I went out to eat at nice place for valentines day 5 years ago and my waiter was a guy I knew when I was younger, he was always mean to me so when I knew we was our waiter I was like oh shit this is weird but after 3 strong drinks I didn't care. I wrote a note on the back of the ticket that said thanks for the great night and I tipped him 65.00
    I'll be back
