She writes her own songs, she plays instruments and she sings live, she's got my respect if nothing else. Musically speaking it's not really my kind of thing, but I think she's good at what she does.

As for the comments about The Fixer being shit because it's PJ's most 'poppy' song, some of the greatest songs of all time are pop songs, it's no big deal.

It's not shit because it's poppy. It's a shit song that also happens to be their most poppy song.

her music's not my cup of tea, but I can understand and respect how/why other people might like her music

also, I might be alone in thinking this, but a lot of her songs sound like Ace of Base ripoffs....

    hold up, you wrote
And poppy sucks ass. For the record, as well, "The Fixer" is poppy and I hated it from the first listen. .

Why bring The Fixer up at all if that's not what you meant?! It's not like the songs are even vaguely comparable. Anyway, my point was that pop music shouldn't be dismissed just for being pop.

Regardless, for a "shit" song The Fixer goes down really well live.

It was in reference to this:
and in response to some of the other comments so what if her songs are catchy? The fixer is catchy isn't it?

Point being using the excuse that catchy isn't bad by referencing "The Fixer" doesn't hold water to me because, while the fixer may be "catchy" and is definitely pop, it's also a dreadful song and the worse I've heard Pearl Jam do.

But next time I'll quote things for people who haven't followed the actual thread.

Hmm five pages of Lady Gaga, I think I'll forgive myself for not reading all of it. Really the worst they have done? Worse than Bugs? I mean I get it, you don't like the song, but in the grand scheme of PJ songs I fail to see how it is that bad, to each their own I guess. I suppose I'm just a sucker for the "fight to get it back again" refrain.

Fine, just don't jump on someone when you haven't read the thread.

And yes, I'll take "Bugs" any day over "The Fixer". It fits Vitalogy and is pretty clever lyrically.

Obviously there are a lot of people who like "The Fixer", just like there were lots who liked "Last Kiss". Whatever floats your boat.

Oh I know. But I still think that 12 year old is cooler than her. There's just something about letting the music speak for itself. He just goes up in shorts and a T, and just belts it out. While not my cup of tea, as many have already said, I think Gaga is pretty talented. She's clearly a great writer/performer for her genre. But her over-the-top spectacle and customes distract me from that, and it is difficult to get around. Combine that with $2000 concert tickets after putting out an album and a half, I'm not convinced she's no more than a fad.
He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share, his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere.

I think she has a good career ahead of her, and I think there's more to her than meets the eye, after reading her Rolling Stone interview. She pretty much flat out stated that part of the reason she's been singing about what she sings about (fame, alcohol, clubs...) and dresses the way she does, was to get the attention and gain a platform, and now she's going to feel freer to present material with more depth to it. Its like she knows how the game is played, and has played it well.

Maybe I'll report back after I see her at Lolla.

I didn't jump on you, it was hardly a mauling! A combination of me not reading the whole thread, and you not quoting the person you were talking to lead me to think you were making a stand alone statement.

Anyway if we're gonna nit-pick, what exactly did you mean by "poppy sucks ass" - all pop music?

I guess the reason I took umbrage with your comments is because I think credit should always be given where it is due. The mass success of Lady Gaga, kind of speaks for itself. She writes her own tunes, she plays and sings them live to thousands of people every night, she's clearly very talented at what she does. An analogy..............one of my favourite tv shows is Dexter, and one of the things I have come across from time to time when people talk or write about the show, is what a rubbish actress the woman who plays his sister is. The reason given, wait for it.......because the character is really annoying. So an actress plays a role perfectly, she's meant to be dopey, whiney and annoying and suddenly she's a shit actress. It's the same issue with Lady Gaga, (and The Fixer, in this case), just because you don't like them, doesn't mean they aren't good for what they are. Lady Gaga is probably the biggest artist on the planet right now, a position she has risen to through her own talent and determination. The Fixer was a fairly big hit by Pearl Jam's standards, it did well on the radio and it got people interested in the album.

I can imagine your reply might go somewhere along the lines of artistic merit, but then I'm willing to bet some of the biggest songs of all time were probably not conceived with as much attention and depth as some might interpret them as having.

anyway, this is all healthy discussion to me, no need for aggressive retorts

    Yeah please clarify...
Anyways its pretty pathetic/arrogant to dismiss a whole genre. Sure there are some 'bad' pop musicians but there are also plenty of 'bad' rock musicians, 'bad' classic rock bands, etc. What do you think the point of music is? It helps people feel good, lots of people love lady gaga, lots of people hate pearl jam, listen to what makes you feel good and what makes you happy and feel better in life.

People are making this mistake too often these days. Pearl Jam, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and the other greats are gifts from the gods to help us on our journey through life (Riches and salvation can be waiting behind the next bend in the road) and should not be mentioned in the same article as the lesser artists.
Don't get me wrong, whatever makes people happy is great, even Milli Vanilli cheered people up, perspective people, PJ are medicine for the soul, Lady Gaga is entertainment.

I like her music. Poker Face is great. Speechless is very reminiscent of John Lennon. Its pop music at its best with a touch of 80's sound. She was also a very nice person to meet. Soft-spoken and polite.

Don't hate on her just because you don't like her style.

I used to feel this way - but recently I found myself asking, is this not a prerequisite to be a musician in the first place? I understand there are acts who do less, but I don't even really consider them much more than noise. Lately, I've been trying to ask for more than just being the one to create your own original songs.

Well if that's how you feel, fair enough. What I respect about someone like Lady Gaga is the sheer determination. Without wanting to come across as mean, she's doesn't have stunning good looks to fall back on like say Cheryl Cole (very popular singer/talent show judge here in the UK - very average singer!), yet she has written a load of hugely popular songs by herself, she has a decent voice, she designs her own stage shows and stuff and tours relentlessly. What I'm getting at, is that she's gotten to where she is by her own hard work, and that is to be respected in my book - regardless of whether I like the music or not.

She is not my cup of tea, but that doesn't mean I don't think she doesn't have a certain amount of talent. Guess I just don't go in for those gimmicky kind of artists. It'll be interesting to see whether she's till around in 10 years and if she changes/evolves much over time.
