Mr. Steinbrenner: Nice to meet you.

George: Well, I wish I could say the same, but I must say, with all due respect, I find it very hard to see the logic behind some of the moves you have made with this fine organization. In the past 20 years you have caused myself, and the city of New York, a good deal of distress, as we have watched you take our beloved Yankees and reduce them to a laughing stock, all for the glorification of your massive ego!

    Mr. Steinbrenner: Hire this man!

It is pretty crazy how different generations of Yankees fans feel about the man. All are sad today but my father spent the majority of my childhood cursing his existence. Obviouslyl he learned his lessons and made the Yankees, the Yankees again but there are plently of Yankees faithful who despised him for a long time. No matter what, it's a sad day.

I'm not a Yankee fan by any means, but this sucks... He was the guy you loved to hate, you despised how he bought up everyone, but inside you wished that he owned your team. One of the few big figureheads in baseball (and really all of sports). It's a sad day...

My condolences to his friends & family.

    STATEMENT FROM YOGI BERRA
This is a very sad day for me and Carmen and all of baseball. My sympathies go out to the Steinbrenner family.
George was The Boss, make no mistake. He built the Yankees into champions and that’s something nobody can ever deny. He was a very generous, caring, passionate man. George and I had our differences, but who didn’t? We became great friends over the last decade and I will miss him very much.

One of the great owners in the history of professional sports. His contributions to the Jimmy Fund telethons and fundraisers here in Boston show what a good human being he was. The Jimmy Fund, started in large part by Ted Williams, help kids fight cancer.

So, this makes the Yankees winning it all last year a little touching actually. He left with a world championship.

I got to meet him a little over a decade ago at Fenway. Chatted for about a minute or two, shook his hand.

My friend, another life long Sox fan, looked at me stunned and asked, "What the fuck was that?"

    My response, "Respect."

    RIP Mr. Steinbrenner.
