The Rolling Stones vs. The Beatles

Kind of the eternal question here...two of the greatest bands of all-time.

I, for one, happen to fall decidedly and unrepentently in the Rolling Stones camp. Never been a big Beatles fan (although I like John Lennon's politics a lot), and the Stones just have so many good rockers.

This is probably a hard choice for many of you, so, which is it? The Rolling Stones or The Beatles?

  • I'm a Beatles girl. :D

Edit: I thought I might pass out when I heard Ed do his cover of Hide Your Love Away at the solo show I attended. Ed and John, my two favorite guys together.

Not to be a hypocrite, but shouldn't this be in the Other Music forum?

With a gun to my head, Beatles. But there is no denying the advancement of rock by the Stones. Nobody wrote a guitar lick like Keith Richards.

stones hands down...love 'em, seen 'em every tour since i was 13 (including pittsburgh pnc park show w/pearl jam opening). beatles are great, don't get me wrong, but the stones are (were?) a way better live band and they lasted longer. the stones work from 1968 to 1978 is unparalleled (beggar's banquet, let it bleed, sticky fingers, exile on main street, goat's head soup, only rock and roll, black and blue, and some girls). the only band with as good a run as that is led zep's first 6 albums. plus i hate the whole sgt.pepper's worship...rubber soul, abbey road, revolver, the white album, and let it be are all better records.

Totally agree. That 10-12 year period is unbelievable. So many great songs.

Beatles for sure. The Stones were tough and all but they were a reaction to the Beatles in some respects. The Beatles proved they can be tough whenever they wanted and also be as smooth as a breeze when they so choose. But I love them both and don't understand why people feel the need to separate and make a distinction. I know this post is essentially for fun purposes but why must a person be only in one group?

The 4.5 year period from December 1965 - April 1970 is the single greatest time period in music history. From "Rubber Soul" to "Let It Be" is unmatched, with the exception of Zep, the Stones, and Bob Dylan. But nothing compares to what The Beatles did during those years and sessions. Their time in the studio helped create what's done in the stupid today; i.e. double tracking voices.

Depends on my mood, but I'll usually go with The Beatles. Lennon summed it up when he said the Stones basically copied all the Beatles' innovations six months after they first did it. That's not to say I don't love the dark and gritty stones from 68 to 72 but man, The Beatles' career had very few low spots and lets be honest, the stones have been coasting for about 35 years now (but they're still a great and classic rock band).

While we're on the subject of 60's Brit bands, are there any fans of The Zombies on the board? If you dig deeper than their three radio songs (She's not there, tell her no and time of the season) they have some incredible pop songs

    LOVE THEM BOTH!!!

...but I heard a good quote once - while the Beatles were singing "I want to hold your hand" the Stones were singing "Let's spend the night together"...

Have to go with the Stones - more rock and more edgy (for their time). Maybe I've just heard to many Beatles songs.

Would take Lennon's music over the Beatles too.

Stones. Was never a big fan of the Beatles. Always found them 'safe' and a bit bland **ducks from flying objects thrown at her**. I do love Lennon solo though.
