hey guys! i was never really that into Kings of Leon (I only have Only By The Night), but I was talked into getting tix for their July 24th show in Chicago. My question is, what songs/albums do you recommend to get me ready for the show? I've often heard the earlier stuff is better

My favorite album is Because Of The Times - every song is killer on it.

Followed closely by Aha Shake Heartbreak and Youth and Young Manhood.

Actually the album that gets the most played by them for me is their live album: Day Old Belgian Blues EP

I hope so too but someone posted an article on here saying the new album has a beachy sound. I don't think that fits with the Because of the TImes sound unfortunately. A beachy sounding record intrigues me though.

Just get every album before Only By The Night. Sooo much better, and not as douched up.

I had a friend's sister who thinks she's a "supposed" huge KOL fan put on her Facebook status, "Listening to old school Kings of Leon." Are you kidding me???

Agreed. You can find some of their new songs on You Tube from recent shows. They're rocking and also lack the douche rinse.

You can't go wrong with any album before Only By The Night.

I think I like Aha Shake a bit more than the other 2, but Because Of The Times is tremendous.

They're playing about 4 new songs on tour this year. Looking forward to hearing them. The Hyde Park setlist was nice.

Where do you stand with The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs? Never been a big fan, but as of late, 'Blitz!', is growing on me...

That album is really cool. Karen O has something about her that I like too.

Alright, I am drunk and have been trying to hold off on posting this comment.

My only advice for a new Kings of Leon fan is.....stop listening to Kings of Leon.
  • Aha Shake Heartbreak. If you don't think the first six songs are completely brilliant, you deserve to be taken away in a straightjacket. Followed by Because of the Times. Those two are so close in my mind. They are both excellent albums but I just love Aha Shake Heartbreak. For me the entire album tells a story; it puts perfect images in my head of what's happening, what he's going through. Really though, it's great.

Only By The Night, however...that's a different story. Stick with the first three albums and you're good.

Aha Shake Heartbreak and Youth and Young Manhood are both great albums. Because of the Times is OK. and their latest is pretty shitty (save for Closer and Crawl).

They're decent live as long as you're not subjected to too many new songs. Acoustic version of Tranni is really cool

The new album is pretty cool to hate, but it's actually pretty decent. The singles are fuckin dynamite no matter how you slice it. Yeah it's shitty they got played everywhere all the time, but that doesn't mean the songs are bad.

Cold Desert, Closer, Crawl and Revelry are all solid.

+1 for all of that. OBTN has some really good songs. Agree with Closer, Crawl, and Revelry and Ill also add Manhattan.

    Yes, they are.

Closer and Crawl are the only solid tracks on there.

I tend to agree with this. But I'm also on the side of everyone else who says any album before this one is better.

I think my issue goes more to the record company getting to the band and it's music. They are no longer the same live band they were with the first 3 albums. They act different. They dress different. It even looks like they aren't having nearly as much fun up there. Personally, I can't stand this new 'arena rock' image they are tending to have vs. the gritty/loose rock band they were a few years ago. I would attribute this to a push from others outside the band to commercialize them a bit more.

I will say this... I probably won't pay to see them again until I've heard they've taken a different path.

saw them 3 times last fall...and I completely agree with this.

They also need to stop playing charmer live...especially in their encores. those vocals make my skin crawl
