That was the first time I ever heard the song, at the time I only owned Ten, Vs, and Yield.

This was my first rock concert ever and I was 14 years old and kind of nervous, didn't know what to expect, and Ed was all pissed off that night, kind of a bad influence on me cause I thought that was so cool haha!

12 1/2 years and 13 more shows later, and now a proud owner of all their albums, singles, and a shit load of a bootlegs, they're still my favorite group.

Release - March 22, 1994 Cleveland State University

I can still remember the band starting in the dark, the lights going on ever so slightly, enough to see the bands silhouettes (and the silhouettes of the "Starting Lineup" figures on the speakers and amps) as Ed sang "can you see us now?", and then fading to black again. As the song continued in the dark and then again the lights going up ever so slightly right on Ed's cue, I remember thinking how incredible and powerful that moment was.

For what it's worth, Release was the second opener I saw on September 21, 1996 in Toronto except this time I had the same experience from about 5-10 feet from the stage in front of Stone.

    3rd opener - Hail Hail - August 28, 1998 Cleveland

    4th opener - Wash - May 9, 2010 Cleveland

Sorry for such a lengthy post.

I liked your post. My first experience was in Columbus OH this year and i can still see the opener happen. The lights went down and music began to play and the back drop showed the Pearl Jam typewriter keys and then the music faded and you heard Ed say Cheers. Then the band went in to Oceans.

But my preset was Mike coming out and singing two songs. That was awesome overall it was the best first concert i have been to. My only regret is not going sooner. I'm hoping for a big tour next year with it being 20 years of Pearl Jam.

ha I was at C-bus as well. Who would have though Mike would have played a song by my other favorite band, The Stones. What a magical evening.

i'm a little surprised at how many people's first show was 2000 or later. i'm sure many of us have been fans since ten and just never had the chance to see them but it's cool to think that many might be new fans!

I have two answers to this question, it depends on how you interpret it.

    1) What is the first song you saw PJ play live?
    or
    2) What is the first PJ song you saw PJ play live?

The crowd in Auckland on 24/03/1995 was so rough that they (well, only Ed really) came out and played Throw Your Arms Around Me before being joined by the rest of the guys and playing Oceans.

So, if you include Ed solo during a PJ gig as PJ (I do. A pre-set, maybe not, but when Ed plays on his own after the encore break that's still PJ, right?), the answer to 1) would be TYAAM, whereas the answer to 2) is Oceans.
