I don't like crowds for one, the venue sucked in my opinion and I had some arsehole blowing pot smoke in my direction just to be a dick the whole time. I don't enjoy attending concerts really. Just not my thing. The band sucked at that show in my view as well. They were just not on there game in my opinion. Attendance was half assed and the audience including myself were not that into it from my perspective anyways. So many people didn't attend that the ushers moved me and my ex-girlfriend 3 times.

    Preset: Porch (Eddie solo acoustic)
    Full band: Release

When I heard Eddie do Porch, I was impressed... when I heard the band do Release, I was sold.

Release, maple leaf gardens toronto sept 21 1996.
A more perfect opener i couldn't have imagined as it was by far my most meaningful song during those teenage years back then. The PJ magic started from day 1 that's for sure!

Release - March 22, 1994 Cleveland State University

I can still remember the band starting in the dark, the lights going on ever so slightly, enough to see the bands silhouettes (and the silhouettes of the "Starting Lineup" figures on the speakers and amps) as Ed sang "can you see us now?", and then fading to black again. As the song continued in the dark and then again the lights going up ever so slightly right on Ed's cue, I remember thinking how incredible and powerful that moment was.

For what it's worth, Release was the second opener I saw on September 21, 1996 in Toronto except this time I had the same experience from about 5-10 feet from the stage in front of Stone.

    3rd opener - Hail Hail - August 28, 1998 Cleveland

    4th opener - Wash - May 9, 2010 Cleveland

I liked your post. My first experience was in Columbus OH this year and i can still see the opener happen. The lights went down and music began to play and the back drop showed the Pearl Jam typewriter keys and then the music faded and you heard Ed say Cheers. Then the band went in to Oceans.

But my preset was Mike coming out and singing two songs. That was awesome overall it was the best first concert i have been to. My only regret is not going sooner. I'm hoping for a big tour next year with it being 20 years of Pearl Jam.
