So I have to say that my boyfriend and I have this sort of conversation all the time. He is an olympic gold medalist in what he calls a true sport, swimming. He agrees with the whole open for interpretation thing, aka judging, disqualifies an activity as a sport. Of course in his mind, only the summer olympics are the "real" olympics to him, so take it for what it's worth.

I don't think the question should be is cheerleading a sport, but rather, is cheerleading a sport that people should be given scholarships for. That seems to be the issue in the original article.
I think canceling volleyball in order to start up a cheerleading program is pretty stupid, especially when you only seem to be adding the sport to appease Title IX and cut costs.
"The dude abides. I don't know about you, but I take comfort in that. It's good knowin' he's out there. The Dude. Takin' her easy for all us sinners."

But swimming has judges too, making sure people do things like th correct stroke for various events, correct turns, and correct starts (especially in relay events). If a human judge decides you did a turn wrong you lose same way humans decide who wins at gymnastics or cheerleading.

This might rain hell down upon me, but someone has to say it . . . . . any athletic event that is dominated by women is not a sport
Wow your a dick!!!
I don't think cheerleading is a sport, really its just dancers on drugs.
I was totally kidding!
I know you were kidding, it just really wasn't funny and was incredibly offensive. Just remember that women are part of this board, think before you type.
For those who have HBO, make sure and watch the Penn and Teller Bullsh*t episode about High School cheerleaders and why it isn't a sport....
I watched that episode just the other night. Now I have a totally different opinion and think that it absolutely should be a sport. Some of the statistics were a bit staggering, and screw Varsity... that company is the devil.

The Summer Olympics are for pussies ... and any sport requiring a man to shave his legs and back to gain a competetive advantage can not be considered a true sport.
Real men compete on snow and ice so they can get drunk and sauna with many ladies after the competition.
1/12/1879, 4/8/1156, 2/6/1977, who gives a shit, ...
