who does it, how hard is it to do, what phone are you using, how fast is the internet, what service provider do you use.

    basically, it turns your smart phone into a modem when you connect it via usb port to your computer.


    i'm thinking of getting a pair of smart phones, but i can only make the numbers work if i drop the home internet and phone service.

    yep and it's great! a few months ago my internet at home crapped out and i was too lazy to do anything about it so i used this...i currently have a droid but i also used it on my moto q

    just be warned, it's works great for browsing and email but if you want to download anything it can take some time

    I don't get tethering. It seems like the speeds aren't as good as your wifi at home. I guess it depends on the device itself too.

    Doesn't verizon/sprint have a mobile hot spot device where you can link up to 5 computers.

    i use tether for blackberry--it just came out for the droid. free trial--one time fee of $49.99, but you can find coupon codes online. i ended up paying $40. it doesn't actually turn your phone into a modem; it uses the data plan on your smartphone to connect to the internet. speed tops out at around 500-600 kbps on verizon's 3g network. definitely not great for streaming video or downloading large files, but you have internet on your laptop wherever you get cell service.

    it's as fast as the internet on your phone


    i would never use it as my only internet connection...any video (youtube etc) takes a long time to stream...it's really best to use when you can't get any other connection

    i don't have a phone that does the net and i can't afford one unless i dump the home phone/internet service. :lol:

    I tether my Blackberry (Sprint) to my laptop all the time. I'll do it now and do a speed test if people want to know...

    Not too shabby for just surfing the web and e-mailing. Considering this is a free Blackberry that my work pays the bill on, I have no complaints having it as a free internet backup.

    a little slower than the verizon person, but still not terible for what i would use it for. (email, forums, ebay) only concern would be porn speed. :lol:

    the only time i tote a laptop is for travel. a smart phone might eliminate that need.

    so i figure it will cost about $25 more per month to go cell only and drop the home internet. hmm pretty cheap.

    I have verizon and am going to go the smart phone route as well. I am too spoiled with my connection speed now that I don't think I could go the tethering route full time. But it's great to have as a backup or while traveling, etc.

    My Time Warner Cable speed right now (according to Speedtest.net) is 14.94 Mb/s, going down to 1 would feel like dial up lol.

    the caps only matter if you use their tethering...if you download the software from the link i provided, you will have an unlimited connection (as long as you have signed up for it for your phone)

    pdanet simply transfers your phone's internet connection to your laptop

    i believe BRY was more concerened about the speed vs quanity.

    mine home internet runs at 7mbs down and 1 up. they say the 4g units are suppose to be up to 10X faster than 3g. if that's the case, it becomes a no brainer
